ACC tennis

That's right.

Today's results:

Clemson 5, NC State 2
Good win. All straight set matches. Clemson took 2-4 and 6. Our two seniors were the only losers, once again.

Georgia Tech 6, Wake Forest 1
The Tripper meltdown continues. Wake Forest has such terrible team chemistry. So much talent wasted. Wolff had a strong win, but GT was able to win every other court.

Virginia 7, Florida State 0
Straight forward win for UVa

Miami 6, Virginia Tech 1
Lame performance from the Hokies. Miami is getting better and better, they have been a surprise this year.

Yeah the BC/Maryland weekend is a wash for most teams in the league. Maryland was supposed to be improved but has been quite dissapointing

Wake beat NC State 5-2. Very close match that NC State should have won. Pulgar and Hogson killed Carleton(he's gonna fall out the rankings, amazing) and Wolff. Wake won 3-6 all in 3sets. The Pack choked away the doubles point.

Georgia Tech at Clemson tomorrow. I will be there in the awful indoor courts as a monsoon is predicted.

If Clemson is to have any shot at beating GT, Galloway must be dropped from the line-up. He is in a major slump. That would but Moran at 5 and Rigsby at 6. Both of them have been on fire as of late and have decent shots at 5 and 6. However Georgia Tech will be too strong at 1-3 and doubles for it to matter anyway most likely.

GT def Clemson 6-1

very tough loss. The score says 6-1 but it was much closer. 4 of our 5 losses were 3 set battles.

1: 16 Gomez def DiFazio 6-4 2-6 6-4:This was the heartbreaker. This would have easily been DiFazio's best win of his career and really helped his ranking. Gomez came out the blocks firing. He was taking the ball early and commanding every point with a long wind-up forehand. Typical Spaniard style, raced to a 3-0 lead. DiFazio fought back and forced Gomez to start taking the ball later and being less confident. DiFazio played very well in the 2nd set. He dictated the angles. Gomez lost his ability to get on top the ball and dictate. DiFazio also took advantage of Gomez's poor movement to his backhand side. DiFazio had a 4-3 lead in the 3rd set and had points for a 5-3 lead but then the wheels fell off. For whatever reason DiFazio fell apart. Winning no points from 4-4 till the end. Gomez was able to prevail after a controversial call at 30-0.(DiFazio made a big deal out of it, but it didn't matter the wheels were already gone).

Gomez is a future pro. He can probably crack the top 200 in the ATP. I think he would be very strong on clay. He has more sense and ability on the forehand wing than most everyone else I have seen in college. If he can add a little bit of power he can be a good challenger clay court player in the future.

2: Y.Maden def 67 Spir 6-4 6-1
Impressive victory for Yannick. He was very close to another ranked win when he barely fell to Wolff after blowing a 5-2 lead. He will be in the rankings soon. Spir got off to a qucik start and led 3-0 in the 1st set. Yannick then outscored Spir 6-1 6-1 Spir could not hit the court with a volley all match. Into the net or wide everytime. It was scary to watch.

GT would win 4-6 in tight 3 set affairs.

Duke @ UVA Friday afternoon

yes, Duke is most likely going to get killed, but some great tennis to be seen, i'm jealous of anyone going to this match

1 dubs and 1,2 singles are going to be awesome (well, I feel better about Duke keeping those close if it's Cunha-Domijan and Carleton-Shabaz, the reverse might be rough for Carleton)

Virginia and Duke each have two singles players in the top 8, and 1 doubles team in the top 6 in the ITA rankings. The competition at the top of the lineups will be extremely high quality.

Automator

Semi-Pro
Yea, depth is where UVA outclasses Duke on paper, although the two times these two team splayed each other last year were outright brawls.

Predictions for today:

Virginia 6, Duke 1
North Carolina 6, Virginia Tech 1
Clemson 6, Maryland 1
Georgia Tech 7, Boston College 0
Miami 4, Wake Forest 3
Florida State 5, NC State 2

damn, shabaz-courtney are tough...just about any other team i feel pretty good if the dubs pt is coming down to 6-6 at #1 dubs...but i felt that break coming...

time to fight to avoid the shutout...

Clemson 6, Maryland 1
Georgia Tech 7, Boston College 0
Miami 4, Wake Forest 3
Florida State 5, NC State 2

Good prediction on Virginia-Duke, but Maryland 5-2 over Clemson was a shocker.

EDIT: I also see that UNC only beat Virginia Tech 4-3.

I am very dissapointed in the loss to Maryland. it is a large step back after some steps forward. We played quite well against GT and Miami. This was a poor showing. Especially from Dom Maden and Moran.

But Y.Maden and DiFazio have been hot. They may be in the rankings soon.

Today picks:

Clemson 6, Boston College 1
Georgia Tech 6, Maryland 1
Virginia 5, UNC 2: Slight letdown after Duke match and UNc will nip 2 mathces in 10 point tiebreakers
Duke 6, Virginia Tech 1
Floida State 4, Wake Forest 3: Tripper Carleton can't buy a win at the moment. Mizradeh should beat Wolff.
Miami 6, NC State 1

ACC SID's getting real lazy these days. Wake Forest,Virginia Tech,Maryland and Boston College have all axed their live scoring function.

duke either 6-1 or 7-0, they have it up now

assume 6-1, they have #4 singles credited to VT, but score shows saba in 3, probably just mixed up 3rd set winner

Today's results:

my picks were pretty close.

Virginia def Duke 5-2: UVA is almost a solid lock in doubles and #2 singles. Shabaz lost his 2nd in a row to Hernandez(UVA fans comment on Hernandez's play of you were there). Jenkins is in a mini-slump. But Virginia dominated in the rest, so 5-2 but wasn't that close.

Duke 6, Virginia Tech 1: Actually kind of a struggle. Virginia Tech battles at 5 and 6 and won on court 4. Virginia Tech is showing a little bit of fight now late in the year.

Wake 4 FSU 3: Tripper Carleton ends his massive slump in style, thumping Bowles 6-1 6-0. Blake Davis was crushed at 3 by Atkinson 1 and 1. Strong performance by Wake. Their individual talent has never been the issue, its the team chemistry and mental toughness of the team that is questionable.

Georgia Tech def Maryland 5-2: Horny flat out sucks.

Miami 5, NC State 2:Expected result but unexpected where the points came from. Miami is usally a deep team but was beaten at 5 and 6. NC State, more top heavy was beaten at 1-4. Matches 2-4 were all 6-4 6-4 to Miami.

Clemson and Boston College: No clue because BC's website has zilch on it. Somebody must be playing a match to rival Isner/Mahut.

top one should be UVA over UNC

and i don't know how much of a struggle Duke over VT was...won all three dubs (2 with ease) and the first three singles off the court went to Duke, all in straight sets, and two of those with ease

i guess they struggled to run up the score, perhaps

tech is pretty good as i see it, though...wins over louisville, boise, and fsu...along w/ 3-4 losses to pepperdine, minnesota, and unc

clemson won 5-2...probably their last win of the regular season if i had to guess: only UNC, Duke, UVA, VT left

I think we have 1 great performance left in us and will beat either UNC at home or VT on the raod.

The BC match was closer than I would have liked. Dom Maden didn't play and Pietrucha played 6 (why play him over Bolona and Rigsby??)

Wake Forest beat Louisville 4-3 today in the last ever match at their old home courts. Decent win for them. Adam Lee really came through in the clutch

Alright peeps. I will be at the UNC/Clemson match tomorrow. I plan to do a mega report. With video, pics and analysis.

If it doesn't rain

tomorrow's slate:

UNC vs Georgia Tech: Hernandez vs Gomez will be a cracker. Both players are in good form. I am not sure about Spir/Boyajian seeing as I saw both of them disected by Yannick Maden in person. UNc has an edge at 3 and 4, Gt the endge at 5 and 6. Pick: Tech 5-2

Clemson vs Duke: I can't see any way Clemson can win. Especially coming off of such a tough loss. Duke 6-1, maybe a win at 5 or 6

FSU 6 Maryland 1

Miami 6 BC 1: Muppidi to break his skid at #1

Virginia 7, Wake Forest 0: Assuming UVA plays the full line-up can't see any spots where Wake can win.

Virginia Tech 5, NC State 2: Hodgson over Daciek at 2 and Sullivan with a win at 5

I also saw that Duke beat GT 6-1 and Virginia Tech upset Wake 5-2.

Gomez gave Cunha his first career ACC singles loss to avoid the shutout - good performance all around for Duke to pound a very good team

and VT over Wake is no upset in my book, even if Wake has been hovering a spot or two above them in the rankings much of this season

7-0 Duke...your man Galloway showed some pride and got a set, looks like everybody else got throttled: one set closer than 6-4 in the remaining five matches...8-1 and 8-2 in dubs...

Yeah it was a whitewash. Started out not so bad. Early leads on courts 2,5,6 and 3. But Duke soon evened them and came through at the end of the sets.

Wietoska was playing 5 and Marchesse 6. Live scores was wrong.

I was dissapointed that Galloway could not win. It would have been a nice send off for him. He was up 4-0 in the breaker but lost it 10-7. Mengel hit like 4 straight winners to take to from 1-4 to 5-4.

You called the score of the GT/UNC match-up and were almost spot on as far as the individual matches. Tech took the doubles point with wins at the 1 and 3 spots. In singles, Hernandez/Gomez was definitely a barn-burner with Gomez prevailing in the third set tiebreaker (12-10).

Spir (GT) retired in his singles match against Boyajian at No. 2 making the score 1-1 at that point.

Dean O'Brien (GT) disposed of Tony Meyer 0 and 1 at No. 6 spot. It was a really odd match to be honest. Meyer didn't seem to have any firepower or weapons whatsoever and O'Brien simply had his way with him. It was difficult to tell if he was injured or if that was normally his style of play. With that win Tech goes up 2-1.

Magin Ortiga (GT) goes down to William Parker (UNC) in straights 3 and 1 at No. 5. Ortiga simply didn't have the depth of shot to hurt Parker. Score tied 2-2.

Eliot Potvin (GT) takes out Joey Burkhardt (UNC) in straights 4 and 0 at No. 4. After the first set, Burkhardt's spirit was pretty much broken and but Potvin was relentless. Tech goes up 3-2.

Kevin King (GT) fights off two match points for Stefan Hardy (UNC) in the second set at No. 3 and forces a third. At this point, both players are absolutely spent...but...Hardy is cramping. You could see him shaking his right leg. He's absolutely afraid to behind his knees to get anything on his shots. Despite not bending his knees, he still manages to crack some outright winners off of King's second serves. It was pretty amazing. At some point, Hardy gets pretty desperate and starts hitting drop shots and going for clean winners from improbable positions. King eventually closed it out 6-2 in the third and clinched the winning point for Tech 4-2.

As mentioned earlier, Gomez and Hernandez was absolutely great stuff. There were some tense moments as Gomez laid into the ref to which he got a warning. There was something in the conversation where the ref alluded to "cheating" on Gomez's part but I'm not exactly sure of what the true situation was even though I was there. Gomez came up with the win for a final of 5-2.

UVA slips by Wake 5-2. Wake's top 4 made a strong effort to get back into the match after dropping the 1st set on all courts. There was actually a moment when the result was in doubt. UVA has to get back to their ruthless ways.

NC State beat VT 5-2 today. Pulgar easily beat Somen and as expected Hodgson beat Daciek. This is a bad loss for Virginia Tech.

Miami 6, BC 1: Muppidi won on #1 as I expected

FSU slid past Maryland 4-3

Duke at UNC today

UNC is ahead in the doubles match ups thus far. UNC live scores has some notes, that's a nice touch

UNC wins doubles point. Things get interesting now.

yeah this match has my attention now, even though I think Duke matches up very very well with UNC in singles

i think 1,2,5,6 all favor Duke...3,4 i'm less sure about (Hardy especially has a ton of firepower, we'll see how Mengel handles his first Duke-UNC match)...hopefully Saba can fight off a good player and give the top and bottom of the lineup a margin for error, we'll see

very strange match so far...lots of lopsided first sets

not looking great for duke so far, but i think reid will not be going down quietly in his last match @ unc

I know its all about matchups but from what I saw of Boyajian wasn't much. He didn't bother Maden at all, yet Carleton had a fairly easy time with Maden. Shocking result

tide turning (credit to mengel for fighting back from 1-5 and saba for finishing off a quality opponent quickly, and of course marchese is our rock)

pretty sure cunha up a break in 2nd, torsten up early in 3rd, and mengel looks to be closing in on the finishing line against what has to be a very frustrated opponent

edit: the barriCunha looks to have found some teeth again, refusing to let himself lose his second career ACC match so soon after the first

wait are you a Duke fan MikeJ?

really? haha, i thought that was established at this point - especially after my series of battles with the stanford-ites

but yes, '09 alum and fan

edit:
and it looks like it's coming down to the battle at #1 (if pinsky isn't injured, i don't like his replacement at #5...torsten doesn't win many in the end it seems - he had a big role in duke's spring break losses to pepperdine and cal...i do, however, like the fact that they've stopped messing with marchese at 6 - he needs to stay regardless of the pinsky vs torsten situation - he's a warrior)
