no but taxpayers foot the bill for defense attorneys, jail time, etc.

on a side note - heard on public radio that coroners are elected and aren't required to have any medical training/experience/etc. UNBELIEVABLE are the stories where the diagnosis/autopsy was completely erroneous and the impact was appalling.

2) most coroners are pathologists but they need not be physicians; some have legal backgrounds and hire pathologists to do the autopsies.
