Best Hybrid Setup for Spin

I'm looking for a spin setup that's more arm-friendly than full poly. It seems like there are 2 ways to go, either gut mains with slick poly crosses, or a textured poly in mains (Tour Bite) with gut crosses. Is there a clear winner here?

For a stiff poly main (I used Focus-Hex 1.18) I liked Dunlop S-gut for the crosses. It has polyurethane in it that quiets the vibrations of the stiffer main string. And the coating is pretty slick. You could try that with the Tour Bite mains. Or you could go for a full bed of one of the softer polys that are out now.

Hi Muppet, how do you find find the Dunlop Syn Gut? can you give a brief description. I am interested in tension maintenance, stiffness and durability.

My apologies to jri90, I am not trying to derail your thread.

Thanks Frank

You will dismiss it because there is kevlar, but the kevlar/zx combo with a 20lb differential can be remarkably arm friendly and still pretty spinny if you get the tension right.

The third option is to look at using a much thinner gauge Poly string in a full bed (18g or 19g). This option is often overlooked because some believe Poly causes arm problems because it is Poly.

Of course, string durability and tension maintenance can be issues with thinner Poly for players who don't like to restring frequently.

Otherwise, try Nat Gut mains with slick Poly crosses. That is a great solution for those prepared to spend the money for a decent Nat. Gut string.

Babolat Tonic + Longevity Mains and Lux 4G soft in crosses. That's my fav so far. But I've heard very good things about Gut plus Wilson Revolve.

Cyclone 19/MonoGut Pro 17. Killer spin and 25ish hours on it so far no breaking

You are getting 25 playing hours out of Cyclone 19?

What racquet are you using? What string pattern? What tension?

Do you hit with heavy top-spin or do you tend to be more of a flat-hitter?

Your wallet says a smooth poly (snap back) and a syn cross.

Rough poly on a gut cross will shred it (unwraps). Any poly cross on a gut main will eat it like bacon (1 hour and break).

If i had my choice i would go with a 16/17ga (16 for me) reel of wilson revolve

Then pick up some greasy syn gut for your crosses. Doesnt have to be the good stuff, dont get polyurathane coating like technifiber or you lose the snap back effect.

I have tried the prepacked wilson sets (spin effect hybrid, spin duo) and my homemade blend is about the same. I use a different cross same main, i dont put alot into the cross unless its something i dont want

No way do gut mains break in an hour. No way. Multi yes, but gut is waaaaaaaay more durable.

I am. 26 hours now. Wilson Ultra XP 100LS. 16 x 15 pattern. Cyclone 19 mains at 44lbs, Ashaway MonoGut ZX Pro 17 at 44 lbs.

I can't believe it either. And I hit pretty hard - mostly topspin but not the loopy kind. More hard strokes with spin so they stay in.

Sony Sensor has my forehands averaging 55 mph topping out at 86 mph. Serves averaging 70 mph maxing at 97 mph.

Weird, i found it less durable, its softer so cuts faster

Do you use a 18*20 pattern?
Nope, 16x19 back then. I tried different guts, and Tonic + Longevity in the mains with poly in the crosses was the best setup for a great combination of longevity and playability (duration). I consistently got nearly 20 hours out of this setup, and that on clay.

For me, gut mains typically last 3X to 4X as long as synthetic gut or multi mains.

There are some who can snap gut mains in less than an hour but those people can also snap polys in less than an hour or two.

Of course, cheapo gut and gut installed poorly can also snap prematurely.

I live in florida so maybe its the humidity that made it break so soon.

I can only think that the 16x15 very open pattern with the lowish tension is allowing the thin mains to slide very easily over the ZX mains and not creating a lot of notch burning friction. It sounds like you are getting ample spin in this configuration without putting much stress on the mains. Good One :)

Thanks! 27 hours now and counting:) Hit some crazy topspin shots this morning but tonight just placed the ball and ended up winning the court tonight. Ended the evening on a nice ace - fun!

I play with Dunlop Black Widow which is extremely spiny and arm-friendly for a poly. I use Babolat NVy which has a silicone coating and allows the main string to slide. Since they don't make this string any more, you can substitute Babolat Spiral Tec for the cross string. Other arm-friendly poly I like is Genesis Trionic, Volkl Cyclone and V-Torque. The Trionic in 16g gets the same spin as Black Widow 17g, but it holds tension better and isn't as plasticky feeling as BW.
