Booing from the crowd was disgraceful

How's about the crowd giving him the benefit of the doubt first before booing him? Innocent til proven guilty. They just assumed he was playing dirty without any facts why. Wawrinka acting like a total clown didn't help the situation and the crowd got sucked in by his carrying on. The Melbourne tennis crowds are usually very tennis intelligent but it let itself down tonight IMO.

Nadal complimented the crowd really well, comes back out holding his back like an 80 year grandpa thus adding more fuel to the fire like a total tool,No Tio Phony in the locker room to help him out. GUILTY until proven innocent. Fantastic entertainment all around Melbourne Park.

Fans in any sport boo when they see unsportsmanlike behavior.

Just shows how attentive and educated the crowd was. They picked up on it right away.

I have to respect a guy who still walks out on the court knowing that he could get whacked 6-0 but still trying to finish the game. THAT's sportsmanship.

WRONG! He thought he could play mind games with Wawrinka and hoped that Stan would collapse. He didn't "know" he would lose 6-0. He "thought" he could turn the match around by throwing some doubt and hesitation into his opponent's mind.

He, too, was wrong.

If I'd been Nadal, I'd have retired after I got booed the second time. The crowd would have got what it deserved - an incomplete match and an unsatisfactory conclusion. I have to respect a guy who still walks out on the court knowing that he could get whacked 6-0 but still trying to finish the game. THAT's sportsmanship. But I guess the Nadal haters would have said he was pretending to be injured in spite of what they saw with their own eyes or that he was trying to psyche out Wawa or something. There's no reasoning with fanboy fanatics.

Nothing would please us more than a Nadal retirement, bro.

Even Wawrinka admitted that Nadal was clearly legitimately injured and condemned the crowd for booing him in that moment.

This...

He felt caught by the crowd and thought something like "holy cr*p they caught me, better make it more believable.."

It was Nadal that was disgracefull and the crowd rightfully booed him. It's always the same with this guy.

Yes....I can't believe the ignorance of some people here who just fail to see this, it's so goddamn obvious!!!

They booed Djokovic for the same thing in USO 2012. Completely understandable, I think they knew there was more going on than the media would like you to believe.

There is a giant herd of elephants in the room after tonight.

ROFL. They booed because they spent a lot of money for finals tickets and were upset that they might get stuck with a brief and abbreviated match. Tennis fans are very fickle, and at slams, anytime a player has to retire or default, some fans are mad because "I paid good money for these tickets". etc. They don't care if you break your leg out there---they would boo you if you didn't try to finish the match on one leg. It's all about the money.

To be honest, I'd be very upset by that too, although it's not the player's fault.

I think there ought to be partial refunds if matches don't last at least 3 sets in a Major.

same. i had a feeling it was serious when i saw tears, i felt bad for laughing at the boos, i felt bad for nadal, and did some self reflection.

There are a number of people---mostly Federer fans---who genuinely hate Nadal and everything about him because of his dominance over Roger. When he wins, they belittle the victory; when he loses, they criticize his effort, his injury history, his style of play, whatever. They despise him because he has had such huge success against their hero. They can't get past that. It is sad to see tennis fans become such angry, bitter, bloodthirsty human beings, but that is what has happened. Rafa has never been anything but unbelievably competitive and full of heart. He gives the game all he has and leaves everything out there on the court. But for those who hate him, he can't win regardless of what he does. If he had retired following the injury time-out, they would have been on him for trying to dodge a legitimate loss. When he came back and kept fighting, they got on him for taking the time-out at all. Had he not taken the time-out and slowly disintegrated on-court, they would have been on him for folding under pressure. They hate him and it doesn't matter what he does, they will continue to hate him because he is the one player that absolutely owns Federer and Fed can't and has never been able to do one thing about it. If Rafa gets 18 slams, they will suddenly jump to something else as their standard for GOAT because they will never acknowledge Rafa as a great player. It is juvenile and childish and ugly and sad, but THEY HATE HIM. End of discussion.

People know this but they are pushing this whole "the crowd booed Nadal because they hate his fake MTO's" to suit their agenda on TW. The very same crowd was cheering when Nadal won the 3rd via Stan's mistakes. Did they suddenly forget Nadal's "cheating"? They just wanted to see their money's worth.

This crowd booed their very own Tomic for retiring and as it turns out, Tomic will actually have hip surgery and be out of action for 12 weeks.

Nadal should have walked off the court when he heard those boos. Why knock youself out for a bunch of nasty people who boo a tennis LEGEND?

As a Melburnian I am totally disgusted with my fellow city dwellers for booing Nadal when he came back onto the court. I was not at the match I watched it on tv. No player deserves to be booed, especially a legend of the game. If it was Davis Cup that's fine it's nothing personal, but this was two individuals not two teams.

Hope those who booed felt like total ***** once they realised he was injured.

Are you familiar with the story "The Boy Who Cried Wolf?" If the "injury" had happened when he was UP, they'd have cut him some slack, but we've seen this movie too many times before, and, your outrage notwithstanding, he does NOT get the benefit of the doubt.

To the original poster I suggest you add 'The Boy Who cried Wolf' to your 2014 reading list. Will help explain last nights events. The Aussies are usually amongst nadals most supportive crowds - but give them credit -they can spot bad sportsmanship a mile off.

They cheered for him once he won the third set.

Did they already forget?

^^^ Nadal obviously had fans out there who would cheer for him when he won a set . It must be the neutral/Stan fans he riled up with his stunts who booed him.

Because he gained the respect and admiration of many people by trying that hard while being in such pain. Look at the reactions after that. The crowd was very supportive. He behaved like the classy champion that he is and many people will admire him even more for that.

Amen!

at least they partially redeemed themselves by the end. those who booed should all feel horribly ashamed, and so should Warwinka for yelling at the umpire and Nadal's group during the medical time out. however, he also redeemed himself by the end as well.

at least these individuals realized their pathetic mistake, unlike the hater trolls on this forum and the despicable I.W. crowd the booed Serena

Stan explained that he didn't have a problem with the time out, only with the umpire who wouldn't explain what it was for.

Looks like Nadal has a very healthy perception of it:

Q. By the end they were shouting your name, cheering.
RAFAEL NADAL: Sometimes is tough for the crowd to understand. The crowd, only thing wants to do is enjoy great match. They paid ticket to watch the best match possible, and I was not able to offer that to them for moments.

I wanted to try my best until the end. But I can understand very well the reaction. They understand later that I was bad. I was trying all what I can try on the court with that situation. The crowd was great with me during both weeks. Support has been enormous, more than ever. I feel very, very proud about they treat, how the crowd is supporting me here.

You never will heard me talk badly about the crowd here.

Good on him... Not to be picky but I somehow feel this wouldn't sit so well with Djokovic.

he was yelling at Nadal's camp. so he did have a problem.

anyway, he certainly redeemed himself at the end. he was very respectful and empathetic towards Nadal, to which i give him credit...

lmao...nadal sure...interpreted the boos differently than I think most would. I mean, was he saying they were mad because they were afriad he wouldnt be able to play?

Like...wow.

Also, djoker's been booed before, if anything he would have antagonized the crowd to fire himself up.

Well everybody thought he was faking the injury. Nobody knew if he was or wasn't. At the end it became more apparent. You can't fault the crowd for that reaction, it's a normal reaction especially since it's very common in the sport of professional tennis that you call a medical timeout to collect your composure like a lot of players do who abuse it.
