Cyclone is too sharp

I have a player that really likes Cyclone mains with Velocity MLT crosses - but it only lasts about 8 days and we're looking to get some better duration out of the setup (while keeping it affordable).

Can you think of an alternative to Cyclone that is rounder, but is at a similar price point?

Velocity seems to be doing a good job as a cross. I don't think they offer it in 15.

Obviously it's a balance, but just looking to squeeze a few more hours/days out of the setup for a junior who we are trying to get a spinny feel without going full bed yet.

Thoughts?

@TierOneSportsOfficial tier one strings are the real deal...ghostwire is my new goto cross string...BK is a great string as well...firewire felt a bit too harsh for me even though everyone says it’s a soft string

What happens to the stringer(I'll assume velocity) after 8 days?

I am learning about strings, a lot recently.
I have some cyclone 17 on the way, never hit it.

I have hit diadem elite xt, which is shaped, you can feel the ridges around the entire string, it's crazy to me! I put at least 12 hours (of hard hitting) on one setup with this and it feels good still.
this string was amazing to me, in that it felt great - out of the gate. great spin potential.
although it is in a stick that doesn't seem to be string sensitive. speed MP 360+.

cheers

I would second this as well if you don’t need the velocity. Ghost wire has been my go to cross since it was released. And you could keep the cyclone in the mains.

@VacationTennis try using as cross a syn.gut that has a mono-core like Gosen or Prince, it will flatten out and wear thin rather than the quick fraying of the multifilaments in Velocity.
This is a good idea as well. Diadem evolution is good! Try the Gamma Jet for sure. Great string for the price.

Correct the Cyclone chews through the Velocity, as expected. Just trying to figure out some other options for mains that could help squeeze a few more hours out of the setup.
How about an even thinner cyclone ? seems like a left field suggestion, but would the edges be less sharp on the smaller version ?

Have to agree with Hyper G soft being a good alternative although it will also eat into the velocity as well. I think if they are looking for a round cross you can use some of the recommendations from above but you will probably lose a bit of bite and spin. That new Poly Tour Rev might be something to try, its almost round and when I play tested it, had good tension maintenance and playability throughout the life of the string. Head Lynx might be a good option as well.

4g soft is a pretty good cross for what you want (?) - slick and durable. Feel-wise and in my own testing vs. Cyclone, it’s a wash. Price point? A few bucks higher per string job but for someone getting a stick done @12 hours, it might buy you 15-18 hours playability.

Hot knife (Cyclone, Black Widow, HG, HGS, or any rough or edged poly)
Warm butter (Velocity, Natural Gut, any multi). Hot knives saw through warm butter quickly. This is just reality. If you use a hot knife as a main, the best cross is a good old synthetic gut, not a multifilament.

G4, hope all is well with you my friend. Let me also throw out a soft poly cross as an option with a sharp poly main. I love Tier One ghostwire as a soft poly cross with Tier One Firewire mains (super sharp poly, crazy spin). See my signature, good luck Vacation Tennis.

Doing well my friend. Thanks for saying hello and suggesting Ghostwire (GW). I am all in on GW as a smooth poly cross. :) I have one 4.5 client remaining using Head Hawk 1.25mm crosses. When it's gone, I will try to convert him to HG/ GW, but he is playing with HG/HH and playing well. So I didn't want to mess with his setup until this fall. I have multiple reels of GW in both 1.27 and 1.22mm and have been using GW 1.22mm as my cross for the last six months, mostly with HGS / GW, but I can also hit with Tier One Firewire/Ghostwire (Boost). GW is the most versatile poly I have in my inventory of 20+ different poly reels. GW can be used with Natural Gut Mains, any other poly to soften a stiffer poly, multifilaments in either multi/GW or GW/Multi. It is I see no reason to stock Wilson Revolve again. I have several clients using Revolve crosses but will try to convert them to GW when I get low on Revolve. All it normally takes is one free string job, free strings, and free labor and most clients will switch to GW. I have converted serval client already.

I should have written "If you use a hot knife as a main, IMO the best cross is a smooth poly cross. If you don't want a full bed of poly yet, use good old synthetic gut, not a multifilament." I was just trying to suggest using synthetic gut instead of a multifilament if the OP's client didn't want a full poly setup.

Others have mentioned, but the mains aren't the problem, the multi cross is the problem. If comfort and safety are the reason for the multi, there arr plenty of soft/safe Polly for the crosses, then the problem is solved.

@g4driver
What are the advantages (and disadvantages, if any) with HGS/GW compared to a full bed of HGS?

The idea behind hybrid strinjobs is to reduce the string-to-string friction, this prolongs the lifespam of the stringbed because the main rough/texturized/shapped string slides over the smooth cross and in theory allows for bigger spin potential if you can swing well enough to generate it. It can also soften the stringbed if one of the strings is much more elastic or softer than its counterpart.

@Humbi_HTX I like you. :) The idea works. A symbiotic relationship between the two polys if you will...honey bee and flowers, clownfish and anemone. And yes Ghostwire softens the stringbed to a point I can get 20-22 hours out of the setup.

IMO for the reasons @Humbi_HTX wrote, HGS and Ghostwire are better together. I can't hit with a full bed of HG as my elbow doesn't like HG 1.25mm and 1.20mm HG breaks too quickly in my Pure Aeros. I can tolerate 1.25mm HG / 1.22mm GW, but my elbow doesn't like it nearly as much as 1.25mm HGS /1.22mm GW, which allows me to hit 10 hours a week. I can't do that with HG/GW, without elbow pain.

Stiffness of 172
Stiffness of 218

My elbow feels that 46 point spread between HG and HGS

I'll probably skip that one but you never know...

A Clemson buddy of mine has a coworker who has box seats for the Panthers. His buddy isn't really a Clemson fan and has given him tickets to the ACC Championship games every year. He likes to tease me with videos of the of the lavish spread of food & beverages in that box yearly, while I sit at home watching the SEC Championship game. :( So wrong. I called shotgun to be his date if his girlfriend doesn't want to go to the game and he gets the tickets to the Sept 4th game. :)

Yes, I'm sure that would be amazing to experience. I'm available if they need a warm body!

Comfort and safety are the reason for the multi. Player is too young to go full bed. Curious what you suggest as a safe soft poly.

I've played with a ton of soft poly myself but have reservations suggesting it for certain players.

The weak link in the stringbed is the multi, replace it by syn.gut (it has an outer coating that protects the multifilaments surrounding the solid core) and you will find similar comfort and performance but longer lifespam. If you must insist in "multifilament" then TF Multifeel would be a good/expensive choice because it also has a solid core that can tolerate the grinding caused by the mains sliding over the cross string.

Pro's Pro Red Devil and Black Force are very soft and comfortable. My son used full bed since 12 years old. He is sensitive to arm issues and has had zero problems with either. String in the low-mid 40's and cut it out when it dies. Both pretty elastic strings.

Sad to see those two aren't listed on the stiffness tool because I am interested. Always nice to see where they sit against others.

Isospeed cream and Yonex poly tour Air are two of the softest polys. I would throw thin gauge Ghostwire in there as well.

1.25mmYPTA is the softest than 1.28mm Cream which is softer than 1.22mm Ghostwire.

I string a lot Velocity / Cream for 3.5 and 4.0 women and older 3.5 men 50+

Wow you're not kidding on YPTA - it's sitting right there next to NXT on the stiffness tool. Will try!

I am not referencing any database. I am referencing my arm. The Stiffness tools measure a discrete static stiffness of a string. Once that string is in the frame and those strings start getting balls on them, the stringbed changes. The database is a great place to start when looking at a string, but your wrist, elbow, and shoulder will tell you how a string feels once you get balls on it.

YPTA and Cream are the only two copolys I know of who specifically list "Elastomer" (fancy name for rubber) in the product description. YPTA and Cream are very unique in the feel when stringing them and you can feel the rubber in the string. Just like I can feel the difference between HG and HGS. I cut 12 inches of HG and 12 inches of HGS and marked each of them with a blue and red sharpie, placed them behind my back on the court. I picked HGS out five out of five times with @MisterP as a witness. HGS seems to have some "Elastomer" or something like it. HG 1.25mm stiffness is something like 218 and HGS 1.25mm is something like 172 a difference of 46 points. I can feel the difference stringing those two strings and my elbow certainly feels the difference hitting with them.

I actually quite like this analogy, might start employing it myself. The beauty is that the high friction of shaped poly/multi does actually cause the stringed to heat up which is why the analogy is surprisingly accurate :)
