David Goffin Appreciation Thread

A few years ago everyone knew he was Fed's biggest fan on the ATP Tour during their 2012 French Open match.

He's quietly creeped up to #2 on my favorite players to watch list. (Fed-Goffin-Stan-Monfils-Rafa-Jo)

He's taken the crown from Mardy Fish after Fish's retirement as the most aesthetically pleasing two hander to watch.

He has such a solid and beautiful game, like Fed it looks like he's gliding on the court. Guy is 25 and still looks like he's 15.

Cheers to David Goffin, may he one day reach the Top 10, have a slam semi run, and maybe even win a M1000 when the Big 4 are done taking them all away.

He is not 15 anymore.

I know it's sad.

Out of the:
Nishikori
Raonic
Dimitrov
Goffin
Pospisil

group, Raonic has made recent strides to become better, Nishikori has not done much since USO 14, Dimitrov has regressed since Wimby 2014, Posp hasn't done anything since Montreal 2013, and Goffin has floated in the Top 20.

The commentators always call it the "forgotten generation" as neither of them have made a slam final except Nishi, and neither have even threatened the Top 4 sans Dimitrov Wimby 2014 beating Murray.

There are 5 players 30 years or older in the Top 11, and 11 in Top 30. 17 players aged 28 or older in Top 30. It's astonishing.

Raonic and Kei injuries had stopped them but fit and in form Raonic and Kei are very dangerous.

Saw him for the first time playing a practice set against Fed at the US open. He was very impressive and beat Fed in the set (I know just practice).

I think he's as good as Nishikori if not better.

Nishikori has great ability to be able to change direction on the baseline rally, besides that I don't think he's anything special. While Goffin is better at the net.

I think his big weapon is his ability to stay in long rallies with his speed and consistency.

Does Novak have a big weapon?
Seriously man , you think staying in the rally is weapon for Goffin ? He is not even top 3 for this only quality. This thread is not for Novak but if you think he won 3 slam , around 8 master, Davis cup , yec and a bronze medal by the same age of Goffin without any weapon than there is nothing more to say.

Actually Kei with great serve and less injury will be dangerous player, his serve and fitness let him down, Goffin looks pleasing to eye but thats it.

Watched almost the entire Wawa match. His 2hbh is better than anybody's not named Nole, Muzza, Nishi. He has a more offensive and cleaner 2 hander than Cilic, Berdych, Tsonga, Ferrer, Milos.

Just my opinion. He was striking his backhand exceptionally today. Scary part is I think hw could go for more if he wanted.

Yeps, his back hand and in general his playing style is very beautiful to watch.

Love David (like Ferrer), he is the closest player I resemble...although I'm light-years behind, but I'm small.

Way overrated.

The way he got dismantled completely by 35 yr old federer says a lot.

Beating stan doesn't mean much. Its not like Stan turned up. Match point was a Stan UE.

I am extremely unimpressed by how he lost to federer at the AO. Nowhere near, nowhere close. Federer wasnt even in good form, just playing at the same level as the guy who lost to Raonic a few wks earlier. Even Dimi did a better job.

Lol at ppl comparing him to Raonic or Kei, who already proved could trouble the big 4 at slams. Raonic in particular may as well made a slam final without the injury.

His serve is as slow as you can get on the ATP. Not going anywhere with that serve.

I was at his match with Stan yesterday, Goffins ability to track down almost every shot was amazing! Stan was pounding the ball off both sides, but Goffin seemed to be able to get almost all of them and return deep to either corner of the court. Not much pace, but great accuracy. As for his serve, yes, not much power, but Stan only jumped on two or three for return winners, he really did not take advantage of the weak serves for the most part. I think Goffins appeal is that he plays like a regular player, no big power, no killer shot, no big serve, so a lot of recreational players can relate and identify with that approach. What makes him a pro is his brain and movement, he needs to construct points rather than blast away. Fun to watch.

Nice thread, i disagreee on your two handed backhand comment , i think there are many more fluent and aesthetically pleasing backhands. Murray? Djokovic? Monfils?

He strikes me as someone who relies heavily on timing, almost like a replica of giles simon. Has a game that can trouble top players when they are below their best but when theyre playing average or above he cant live with them. Seems like a nice guy. I would of put him on par with Thiem last year, but he has really stepped his game up so far this year, so i'd give Thiem the edge

Nice thread! Goffin is one of my favourite players and has been for quite a while now.
I just read he'll be playing the grass tournament of Rosmalen this summer. May well be a nice opportunity to see him live at work.

He's an attractive player and often makes up for a mediocre serve and lacking weight of shot with clever ball placement and court strategy. He reminds me a lot of Simon in this respect.

The kind of guy who will almost always lose against the Big Guys so long as they are on form. But if they are not on top form, he will have them!

I agree with this but he also doesnt have that little thing (not sure what it is) that can annoy the top guys as much as Simon has.

Maybe , as I said in previous post, can develop more by practice.

I love this kid. I do think he could be a top 10 player but he would need a legendarily kind draw to make a major final, let alone win. He does not have the mind for it.
But I hope to see him score some more big wins at the masters level.

Is it me or has he bulked up a tad bit from previous years? I remember a skinnier Goffin - maybe I just haven't been paying attention.

Goffin is a pro's pro. His practices are serious business and his game doesn't really have a weakness. But he doesn't have a go-to shot either. He defends so well, constantly adjusts tactics throughout a match, and is pure class win or lose. You get your money's worth when you watch him. My wife and I saw he and Tiafoe play at Indian Wells and that was one of the most exciting matches I have ever seen. A total contrast between shot making and steady grinding. I could see how some find him boring, but Goffin is one of my favorite players to watch.

I love me some Goffin. A great result today too, that win over Cilic was impressive.

I find his style boring. Hits a very light ball. I don't think he will ever reach top 10.
Is a little Simon like... Speedy, hits just hard enough and deep enough to keep players at bay, but does most of the he work against the bigger hitters. Has to be on to win IMO.

Technically, his game seems so very correct and well put together. And he adapts so well during the course of a match too. He just seems to lack power everywhere.....serves, groundstrokes.

The Belgian Bee keep buzzing along. He will face Simon for a spot in the semis. What a 3 weeks for Goffin.

Goffin is too pasty, he is not the one from the sun. Should spend more time outdoors.

Oh, and Mardy Fish had a crown of some sort (lol)?

Goffin is better at net, and maybe has slightly better serve, not that much that it would make significant difference.

That being said, Nishikori is better in every other area of the game, barring injuries. When both play at their best, Nishikori is clearly the superior player.

Goffin has clearly made some improvements to his baseline game. Much more pressure.

Cheers to the Belgian Bumblebee. Tough match against Nole he could have won but didn't pull it out.
