Does how quickly you destroy shoes reflect how good your footwork is?

I've heard stories of how pro or near pro level players will destory tennis shoes in a matter of weeks. Their footwork is so intense that the shoes just can't last for long.

For me, shoes last at least 6 months. The tread will get all worn off on the side toward the big toe, but it doesn't effect performance. In fact, I prefer shoes that have been a little worn down. I just found the first tiny hole that goes into the midsole on my asic court ffs, and I've had them 8 months now.

Do you think better, more intense footwork will result in wearing shoes out more quickly? Or, are higher level players just preferring a brand new pair?

If your feet go to the right spot with no wasted motion, your shoes should last a while.

I think it’s a little bit of both. If you’re split stepping, (don’t get me started with that subject) getting to ball with good footwork you’re certainly going to wear through your shoes a lot faster than most. Now with that being said, if you’re sponsored and have access to endless amounts of equipment and gear why not have a fresh pair of shoes on every other game or so.

I wear basketball shoes when I play, I start to notice severe wearing at the pivot point on the sole of the shoe in about 3-4 months.

Two words: frequency, volume.

You mean like they're playing every day and for more hours so they won't last as long? I agree, but I'm talking about guys going through shoes in literally a week or less. Maybe you mean taking more steps at a faster rate when they play?

Both.

Affirmative. The basic premise of this thread is flawed. I suspect that Roger’s shoes last a lot longer than Novak’s.

Well, I'm just legitimately asking a question. Not trying to make a claim. I just remember seeing a post from a very high level player about how he shred through to the midsole of his shoe in one hitting session. That made me wonder if my shoes lasting for 8 months was a sign that I should be more active and intense with my feet.

Acknowledged. Was not questioning the legitimacy of your question.

Sure intensity (and frequency/volume) will have a bearing on the longevity of your shoes. Footwork technique will also have a bearing. But rapid wear does not necessarily mean that your footwork is optimal or even good. I sure that Roger's footwork is demanding on his shoes, but not as wear-inducing as the footwork of Novak. Either poor footwork of great footwork can wear shoes out rapidly. (Not saying the Novak has poor footwork; it's just more demanding on his shoes than the footwork of other elite movers).

I think there's a correlation between how good your footwork is and how fast you wear out your shoes. But that's because good footwork and intense footwork tend to be correlated with each other, and it's intense footwork, not good footwork per se, that causes you to wear out your shoes.

True and not only for pros but for advanced players such as Nytennisaddict, as he was saying in another thread that he goes through many pairs of shoes in a year (12?).

To the OP: That's on hard courts correct? I usually wear through my shoes on hc in 3 months (top of the line Nike Lunar or Court Ballistecs), while on clay Asics Resolution 7 might last me a couple of years (and it's usually the inside lining around the heel that goes, not the soles).

They also play every day for hours on end

Yeah, but I'm talking about the shoes being destroyed in maybe 2 matches/practice sessions. Maybe not quite that extreme, but to the point where it couldn't possibly be the same amount of time on court.

I've never heard of anyone going through brand new shoes in a week or a single training session... not saying it's not possible, just that i've never seen it.
toward the end of life of my sneakers, if i've held onto them beyond the point they stop squeaking (ie. smooth), once i break through the rubber, to the foam, i'll literally put a hole through the shoe is a single session.

back when i was able to play 10-15h a week (before kids), i'd go through sneakers in a month (and always send them back for the 6mo warranty)....
over they years, i've also spoken to handful of parents of highly ranked (national) juniors, and if they play on hc, they usually go through sneakers in a matter of weeks (20h, gritty hc, fast athletic kids with powerful first step, etc...)

is that you, roger?
that said, if i recall you're an s&v'er - maybe because you're ending points quick, you spare your sneakers.

I was half-joking. I think the main reasons I don't go through sneakers fast is that I don't actually play singles that often and and I continue playing with shoes with worn-down tread.

Six years ago I went through a pair of shoes every 4-6 weeks or so and I was on the court 360 out of 365 days. Holes would appear in the soles, near the big toe and just a little bit quicker under the right big toe.

Nowadays it can take me 3-4 months to go through a pair until seeing a hole and I’d at least like to think I’m on the court just as much, and that my footwork hasn’t gotten any more lazy over those years! The biggest change is that I have more than one pair now and I used to only use one pair at a time for any given amount of time until they were out of commission.

There’s no one who’s wearing the soles out of a brand new pair of tennis shoes in one training session. It took a lot of effort (on court) and many hours to wear them to the extent of seeing holes after 4-6 weeks. I could see it happening to people out there in maybe 10 days - 2 weeks of intense training.

I agree that it really has to do with how often you play though. People who play 3-5 times a week really see this type of thing happen much more often than someone who play 1 hour a week. I also think “match type” players wear their shoes out a lot quicker than those who go out for a baseline rally.

You do know that pro players aren’t just playing a lot. In addition to playing and drilling strokes, they also spend a lot of time doing footwork and agility work like spider drills, ladder work, cone slalom, suicides, etc. These drills are hard on the soles when they are starting and stopping at explosive speeds.

When no-one is watching, I kick my shoes into the brushed cement pavement repeatedly so that I can show people on the courts that I have fantastic footwork.

When they see me playing, I tell them it's because they need to git gud if they want me to see me use more than 5% of my powers.

Friendly tip:
Besides the 6mo warranty, there is also the TW (and other vendors) warranty which is better :D
I.e. even if you don't "break through the rubber, to the foam, nor put a hole through the shoe", but just have the thread gone, they will still change the shoes(once I start slipping or if there is another problem with the shoes)

Lol. No. Close your eyes at an ATP match. Listen to all the shoe squeaks. It is a lot more steps than it looks.

But for your level I agree shoes last a bit.
I dont' understand why recreational players keep comparing themselves to pro's. They cannot be more different.

Pros have sponsors and resources to purchase so they don't even intend to get their shoes looking dirty let alone worn down.

Pros requirement/demand of footwork is 100x times more than recreational players'. We move when we feel like to. So much opposite.

Pros work on many different surfaces. Rec players play on ONE.

Pros' courts tend to be good quality. We're lucky if we get a clean court and a non broken net.

The two worlds couldn't be more opposite.

I feel like I have gotten better and my shoes last longer. But I'm also playing more doubles and more on clay so I can't be sure.

Ok, this is the most interesting story I've heard about footwork wearing out shoes:

The other day a guy was pointed out to me. The story on this guy was he would buy warranty shoes and to ensure he got a free replacement pair, at the end of six months he would hold his foot out his car door while driving (grinding the sole down). After he pulled this stunt several times he was informed by the retailer they would no longer honor his warranty claims.

He went ballistic and and threatened the person/people at the retailer (for not honoring his fraudulent warranty claim!) to the extent that he was arrested! How nuts is that? (I wonder if it was TW??)

I’ve had shoes lasting me a month sometimes 2 months as a junior. One Nike pair of Agassi shoes lasted 2 weeks. It depends how rough the hard court surface is you’re playing on as well, not just footwork. Your body weight plays a role as well.
