Let's assume (I now what you can do w that word, still) that Nads and Thiem meet.

Does it have a fair chance to be a real contest?

Rafa knowing he’ll face a player with a single handed backhand in the final will be even more motivated to up his game and dispose of JDP in 3 sets.

Thiem still only has one way of playing - hit it harder and if that doesn’t work hit it even harder. If he does reach his first slam final, then he’s gonna nervous as hell. My thinking is if Roger and Stan couldn’t take him to 5 sets then neither would Thiem. Rafa has his get out of jail free card v single handers; more so on PC by hammering their backhand to open up the court and then can go either way when he gets the short ball he wants.

fair enough.

I think Rafa's level would have to be fairly bad and Thiem would have to be near his best for him to win. It's not impossible but my expectation would be for a fairly comfortable Nadal win. I'm not sure Thiem will get by Cecchinato tbh.

Del Potro is a good SF opponent in the sense that I don't see it being as physically taxing as playing someone like Schwartzman. Of course if Del Potro zones then he's very tough.

Doubt it. Tsitsipas is #39 in the world yet Thiem needed four sets to beat him. Schwatzman is #12 in the world, and Nadal destroyed him with a double 6-2, 6-2 today in sunny conditions. The final will be on saturday, with sun. No hope for Thiem.

If Nadal is taken to five sets at the SF with Del Po,Thiem wins his SF in easy straight sets and Nadal plays like yesterday and there is no rain delay, then yeah Thiem will have chance to win it.
Pretty much this.

The likelihood of all these things happening are remote, though. Especially Rafa having a gruelling fiver-setter against Del Possum. I just can't see JMDP winning it when Nadal will ruthlessly expose his "weak"(some will disagree) BH.

You sure?

Who made these posts a month or so ago?

When is Del Po coming back, Madrid? He's the only guy who could challenge and beat Nadal.

For most mortals, I agree. Obviously Rafa is the exception to this rule, but 32 is absolutely ancient on this surface; this is why I say he will not sweep clay season this year. I was absolutely pilloried when suggesting an in-form and on fire Del Po can beat him at one of the clay Masters or RG, but I think that is possible. Not likely at RG and Del Po doesn't like the dirt, but I'd pick JMDP over Thiem any day of the week in a big match on a big stage.

If I think Del Po can win RG in June, why argue it? It's as valid as all those thinking Zverev or Thiem will do it. ;)

He'll be 32, I say he will not win #11. And if Del Po really is mentally into clay and peaks during RG, the big guy has a chance. He doesn't choke against the top players and that FH is.... off the charts! JMDP for his second slam in June in Paris. You heard it here first

Was that your twin who made those statements?

Daily contradictions from you.

Thiem will make the final, but will not make it to a 5th Set. I'd wager a straight set win for Nadal, but I wouldn't be shocked if it goes 4 sets.

Isn't the men's final on Sunday? I think the Paris weather for Sunday is thunderstorms?

Secondly, the rankings of the players Thiem beat vs the players Nadal beat aren't the main thing. Match-ups are more important and the fact that Nadal has looked slightly vulnerable at times and is 32 rather than 22.

Thiem will win RG, Nadal has been playing very poorly and he looks more vulnerable than ever.

The Thiem for a new king is nigh!

Err.... the Final is on Sunday and the forecast is thunderstorms and breezy. Same on Monday if it gets postponed.
The weather this year is likely to be the only winner. High humidity, thunderstorms and 80% of rain forecast. I expect the end of this tournament to be as unpleasant as 2014 at the USO.

And coverage has been a joke. When I finally found the men's matches today, which were shown hours before anything live was advertised, I set thing up to catch them on repeat. But on repeat they showed nothing of the Delpo match until Nadal won in an unbelievably predictable, boring match. No one but a diehard tennis fan would suffer through this.

None of the matches today were much good. But I've had a two day migraine so maybe that's made me grumpy!!

Come on, don't pose the question in such a lame way.

Does he "have a chance"? Of course he has a chance. He's even beaten him before. But "a chance" can mean anything from 1% to 99%. Doesn't take much to "have a chance".

DelPo can't handle 5 sets with Rafa. DelPo gets tired more quickly than Rafa.
