Federer slammed for skipping clay in '17

Don't forget that he played full clay court schedule through 2015, when he was 33 years old. Only starting at 34 when injuries piled up he only has played 1 clay court event(2016 Madrid). I think a 34+ year old is entitled to start skipping portions of a season, especially as compacted in April to July(clay & grass). If grass & clay were inverted, Federer would never have missed the 'spring grass season'! It's all rigged for Rafa.

Who is slamming him? They must be morons. He is winning slams and that's all that matters to him. The Rafa roger rivalry put clay back in the spotlight, before it nobody really cared

What's the source for your title, or is it just click bait?

Guy can’t catch a break, after all he’s done in tennis you’d think he would be able to offer himself a break on your, even when the ATP rules support his decision.

It's not even sensible Nadal fans who think this. It's just a few of the usual suspects who can't enjoy Nadal's fantastic season without the pleasure of seeing Fed getting a beating.

How many times is this subject going to be discussed. Everyone knows the rules. Only started caring when Federer was seen as a threat to certain fanbases.

Who slammed him? At this point, he can do what he wants. If he had played clay, then he would have jeopardized his chances at Wimbledon so it worked out in the end.

"Slammed" by anonymous internet posters he doesn't give a damn about. I'm sure he'll be up all night worrying about this while he's playing with his 4 kids, looking at his 19 GS trophies (2 of which came this year), and drowning in his hundreds of millions of dollars.

I suppose the internet takes all kinds. Most times unfortunately so.

Careful now. That could happen.

And Federer also stated that he doesn't regret skipping clay at all and he's over the moon about the kind of year he's having in 2017.

I'm sure he's not losing any sleep about it like some people do.

Same ATP that has zero Masters 1000s on grass and 3 on clay.

Grass is a surface almost nobody plays in regularly.

agree with Sudacafan's inference here, seems moronic to have a major event on a surface pretty much nobody practices on with any regularity. USO and AO figured this out years ago and changed surfaces, Wimbledon seems to be more than enough of this grass idiocy. Not to mention the fans, who play on hard or clay, and should be able to identify a bit with what they're watching.

Who cares what some posters say on here? Most of it is just tit for tat arguing anyway. Federer know's he can still play great tennis but not the same amount, he can't play a full season anymore. Most players retire before they're his age and the ones that carry on don't win 2 slams and almost make number one (think Haas, Stepeanek etc) He has to sacrifice some events and the clay season is his lowest chance to win (still think he could win a clay masters if he really tried) and it's right before his best chance of a slam at Wimbledon. He's skipped HC events too. Nadal, Djkovic and Murray will all come to skip events more in their later years.

Tennis was born on grass.

Wimbledon is undeniably the most prestigious event in the game according to Nadal, Novak and all the greats.

It's unreasonable to slam a grass masters 1000 when it's obviously possible to host a solid grass tournament. Queens, Halle, Stuttgart, and Wimbledon don't seem to be having trouble getting players, crowds or money.

I grew up in the States - kind of a big country for tennis not too long ago - playing plenty of tennis. And I never saw a clay court in my life except maybe once. But I can't remember. I did see plenty of grass courts at a country club my brother belongs to.

So... Yeah. I think at least one grass masters - when you've got 3 clay - shouldn't be a problem.

Most people apart from bits of Spain and south amercia don’t play on clay either. The vast majority of Rec tennis players will never see in real life anything but various hard courts. Get rid of clay and grass then?

Nobody slammed Fed.

That is, I slammed him an I'm a nobody.

I'm just principally against top players skipping Slams. Doesn't feel right to me.

Guess you must be too young to remember when much of the Top 10 skipped Australia, and others skipped RG, USO and even threatened to skip <gasp> Wimbledon... and in many cases, most weren't even within spitting distance of Fed's age. Just shows I guess that tennis has been going on for a long time.

I’ll say this: Even though I think it’s a weak primrose path move to skip clay having a genuine chance to win the French I can understand from it from logical points of view.

But if there’s a time when Rafa doesn’t play it and Fed DOES decide to play I will end up getting banned because the servers will not hold up from the strain of my rage. I would just LOVE to see how Fed fans would defend that.

Well, 90% to 95% of tennis courts in South America, where I live, are of red clay. Rest is hard courts and no grass at all.
I’ve played tennis in the US when I go visit and it’s always been in hard courts, and I still haven’t seen a grass court there.
The only time in my life I’ve seen grass courts was in an English community club in Argentina, and never had the chance to play in them so far. I remember they told me that those were available to play only for 3 to 4 months during the year.
That’s why I say grass courts are an anomaly, at least for me. I would like to see the results of a TTW poll about which surface do users regularly play in. I don’t believe grass courts should get more than 5%.
I don’t deny grass in tennis history and tradition, however grass is very far from popular now.

How many years did Agassi skip AO during early part of his career. Even Lendl, and Borg, two of the greatest on clay skipped RG to focus on winning Wimbledon.

You have a better chance of hell freezing over than Nadal deciding NOT to play clay. I wouldn't hold my breath if I was you, the guy plays it on one leg, if he has to.

Who or what gets a 1000 is down to money and entrenched interests backed by money. You'd need deep pockets to shoe-horn a grass 1000 into the mix.

Look at these hypocrites. If you look at these different types of threads that concern Federer, the discussion involves non-Fed fans coming up with ways to stop Federer from winning ANYTHING. Federer this year has demonstrated that he can still win hence the full court pass by biased interested parties.

Correct, the “other” important argument: money.
Though it should be enough with lack of popularity.

The majority of outdoor tennis on mainland Europe is clay as well. There's also a lot of artificial grass in the Netherlands, but all the ranked tournaments are on clay.

I think it sets a bad precedent for some potential future great players who might choose to specialize on a particular surface as they begin to age. While people on here can skip around and say its totally fine for an "old" guy like Fed to skip clay tournaments, it gets a little silly to skip the entire season including the French just to prepare for Wimbledon for 8+ weeks. Fed fans only let this go because Federer is doing it. Skipping an entire season is ridiculous especially when you don't have a legitimate reason to be missing it other than thinking you can't win. Keep in mind these guys are still pro athletes, the whole "potential injury" thing would only make sense if he was trying to grind out 3+ tournaments on clay. At one or two tournaments he should be fine on clay which isn't necessarily an injury inducing surface to begin with.

OK, but the last time you checked, how old was Federer?
