Halep is screaming like a water buffalo in heat.

Rafa Nadal has been known for his water buffalo impersonation as well. Jimmy Connors was making a lot of “heat” sounds before high-dB miss, Monica Seles.
I remember. The men have had some pretty bad ones. But it’s almost all the ladies these days. Kuznetzov was quiet in the Washington DC final - until she fell behind then started really letting loose.

I don’t watch WTA much but it always surprises me to see Halep making such demonstrative noises because she’s so small!

Considering she never used to do this I wonder who told her she would play better if she started screaming as loudly as possible? o_O

Seems to be working for her tho. I recall her being a fairly quiet player a few years back. Remember, she’s only been in the top 10 in the past 4 years and has really hit her stride in the past 2 years. Coincidence? Maybe so.

IDK but this started to happen a lot.
Muguruza also evolve.

But I don't really mind the grunt. It highly exaggerated by the mic I think. I watch Sharapova live, it's loud but not that loud.
Some don't realize they grunt that loud.

Safarova doesn't know the sound of her grunt.

You both are probably correct about the on court mics exaggerating the sound of the grunting. This might be purposely done to highlight other sounds like the bounces and the ball conntacts with the player’s rackets.

I have seen also seen Garbine, Maria and Vika in person — each more than once. None of their grunting was as loud IRL as it often sounds on broadcasts. Note that the grunting sounds worse on some videos than others. Could be due to how hot the mic-ing is.

The only player sounds that I found to be really objectionable, in person, were those from Michelle Larcher de Brito and Monica Seles.

No doubt the exposure to the sound effects from Maria, Serena and Vika has had an influence on the same from other players. It can be contagious.

has anyone ever asked Halep why she started screeching? I still like her game a great deal, but the noise is unbearable. I was shocked when I heard her make these noises because she used to be quiet.

Go Sloane!

Seems that her results have improved since she started becoming more vocal. But I doubt that it is loud in person as it sounds on TV. Court sounds appear to be amplified by the court microphones.

Zverev would surely say this match is truly pathetic - nobody can hold serve, moonballs, missed FH. double fault party...

You have too many WTA players making loud noise during groundstrokes now! Maria, Vikita, Serena.... and now Simone! Turn for the worst in my viewing displeasure!

Definitely notice it more on TV than in person. Have sat right behind or next to the court when Maria, Vika and Serena have played. Was not really too bothersome at all. But can be rather annoying on tv when the court microphones are turned up.

A secret affair or liaison between Simona and Maria?
I didn't mean "doing it" with each other!!!

But seriously, is there ANY other sport where people scream like this? It's ridiculous, as well as pointless. Jeez, I'd be embarrassed. They're still screaming after the ball has crossed the net, for heaven's sakes.

Think there was a study on this. Screaming/grunting/moaning, like a water buffalo in heat, helps a player in hitting the ball 3% harder...or something silly like that.

...sort of like weightlifters exhaling forcefully when they lift a weight, perhaps. If this is true, heaven help us if Fed ever starts screaming. Imagine.

Halep did not sound as loud in her match against Tomljanovic on Wed. Her playing seemed less inspired as well. Less noise, less effort? Coincidence? Rain suspension in the 3rd set. Hoping she’ll finish it off today with more fire and better serving.

Larcher De Brito was the undisputed high-decibel queen. Probably no coincidence that she trained at Nick Bollettieri’s academy, home of world class high-dB grunters. Other grunters who trained at Nick B’s include Monica Seles, Maria Sharapova, Andre Agassi and, for a while, Serena Williams.

Yep. Looked like she'd spent too much time on the roller coasters at Kings Island...just down the road. Just not into her tennis.
