How big is todays final for Djokovic?

Factoring everything in, like his USO finals record (imagine losing a USO final once more..), catching Nadals 3 titles and move away this talk about Nadal having more HC slams at an HC slam (like that would matter in their overall HC prowess).

How big is todays final for Djokovic?

IMO, this is huge for Djokovic. Especially with the history he has at USO. Unreal consistency, 8th final, but ''only'' 2 titles for one of the HC greats.

This could potentially be his most important match of his career after FO 2016 final. I can't put words how big todays game is for him.

What do you guys think?

Come on nole!

Huge. Djokovic winning means he's just 3 slams behind Nadal. And Djokovic is statistically better than Nadal on hard and grass, which counts for 75% of the slams.

I wouldn't say it's big, he really isn't going for any record.

Way bigger for Del Potro I think to bag a second Slam.

I predicted Del Potro to beat Nadal........ Delpo might win in 5 possibly 4 today.... however I wouldn't bet it though.

It's not even that serious, he's still won Wimbledon and made a US Open final. He's also clawed his way back to the top 5 when at one point this year he was ranked outside the top 20.

I'd say be happy and don't expect anything. This has been a wonderful year for Djokovic even if he hasn't shown his superhuman 2015 consistency.

I can assure, there's no problem, it's huuuuuuge!!!! (In all seriousness, depending on Djokovic's future retirement plans, this match will offer insurance for Roger Federer that his slam count is secure and that Nadal will have competition at the French for years to come)

It's quite simple: GOAThood is at stake.

Jk.

Looking forward to the 14->17->20 split, though.

It is huge.. Stan the Man (his nemesis) and Murray are just getting their form back. AO 19 could be tougher for Djokovic this time around. So, he needs this like Nadal needed Wimbledon which he should have got. Tennys Sandgren will want revenge too :)

arguably as big if not bigger than Wimbledon. Whatever slim chance he has of catching the people in front of him (particularly Nadal) is considerably improved by adding Slams to his tally in quick succession while he's still "young." Even if Federer never wins another Slam (something I think is almost a certainty at this point), the likelihood of Novak winning 7-8 more Slams, where most would have to come past the age of 32, has to be so minimal. Running off a few in a short amount of time is the only way he's even got a chance of making it interesting again.

Every slam final is a big deal, obviously. This isn't nearly as big for Novak as it was for Rafa, since Novak has no chance to become GOAT anyway, he's much too far behind in the slam race. The biggest thing at stake is if Novak wins, he can secure a sixth YE #1 and for legacy purposes, that is very big. With a win he moves ahead of Pete as arguably the third greatest player ever.

It would cap an incredible comeback for Djoker-- the greatest comeback in tennis history, IMO.

Minor correction, he could get a fifth* YE #1. He has four YE #1 finishes so far.

he wins today and he's 3 behind Mr. Tendinitis. the likelihood he then catches and surpasses Mr. Tendinitis is not unrealistic. and if that happens, Mr. Tendinitis is no longer in the GOAT discussion.

Big - it means that, like others mentioned, Rafa is now under the gun to win more slams from both fronts (Fed and Djok) and now has to go back and fend off a competitor whose more likely to win slams on ALL surfaces than he is.

Big if true.

Lost finals to Stanley (x2), Mugg (x2) and John Martin (1) if he loses.

Ralph has only lost to Stan outside of Big 3 in a slam final.

Fred has only lost to Dell Porter outside of Big 3 in a slam final.

I don't know, it's a big opportunity to add another USO title. It's a mystery that he 'only' has 2 with that resume.

There is still 1% of people who think that Sampras had a better career than Novak's because 14>13. I know it's so stupid though.

I would take Djokovic's career with 12 Slams over Sampras's any day of the week.

With the career Grand Slam, 4 majors in a row, every Masters 1000 won, winning head-to-heads against Federer and Nadal, a notably better career W/L percentage, and more tournaments won, I think Djokovic has already surpassed Sampras, but a 14th major incontrovertibly puts Novak above Pete.

Well I'd still say he has a great chance at winning this major. He's definitely the favorite over Del Potro. I'd worry more if it was a player that could outgrind Djokovic. Nole doesn't seem to have as much issue with big hitters IIRC.

I don't think his 2 USO titles hurts Novak's being considered a HC great because his record 6 AO titles counters any argument to the contrary. Obviously this is a huge opportunity if Novak wants to catch Rafa and dramatically increases the odds that he will if he wins today. In all likelihood, Rafa will retire from tennis before Novak will.

It'd be a record if he had 7. He shares the record with Roger at the moment, but I feel with the way Djokovic is playing he's going to take back the record next year.

They play to win, no!? ;)

I don’t mind Novak. Actually, I want him to get the same number of GS like Kneesstrong, as long as it’s less than 20.;)

I’m cheering for DelPo tho - always liked the Gentle Giant.

If he wins, he equals his idol Sampras on the very same court that Pete won his 14th on.

Interestingly Federer and Nadal both won their 14th slam at RG
Djokovic could potentially win his 14 slam at same place as Sampras today, the USO.

Huge. He cements his floor as 3rd all time with a win. Gotta officially drop Pete.

Yeah yeah I know he’s already past Pete but this makes it indisputable

Novak still has a small chance to get near Roger if:

  1. He wins this USO final
  2. Maintains the high form into next year and wins 2 majors next year
  3. Nadal remains injured and does not display the form he had in 2017 and 2018
  4. Fed continues to spiral downward
  5. The next generation continues to prioritize twitter over tennis and don't care to become the Number 1 player
A lot has to fall in place for Novak to overtake Nadal and catch/beat Fed in Slams. I give it less than 20% chance. However, it can still happen. This is mostly due to no other upcoming ATG, challenging Novak. Fed had Nadal from 2005 onwards and Fed had Nadal and Djokovic combined from 2007 onwards. Djokovic only has bad knees Nadal, 37 year old Fed, Zverev, Kyrgios, etc., on the horizon from 2019 onwards.

That is not Djokovic's fault as it's on the tour to get better themselves and not wait for his level to drop. He also had it very tough dealing with Fed and Nadal from when he joined the tour until now. So whatever he wins, he earns and he proved he could go toe to toe with Nadal and Fed and also make a legacy for himself.

If Novak can keep winning slams while playing at only 80% of his peak level, that's huge. He is making up for those Pax y Amor years in a big way.
