How many times did Fed shank a groundstroke in Wimbledon Final?

ESPECIALLY, considering how many times he framed his groundstrokes in the Wimbledon Final. Maybe, he should also go 3-4pts lighter in swingweight as he gets older, and considering he will try to keep shortening points

Does anyone know how many times he framed a shot in the Wimbledon Final? Guesses? It felt like 15-20, at least

It is cringey to watch Fed shank against Djok. That is one reason Fed will never beat Djok. Good luck trying to shorten the points. Djok can counterpunch and prolong the rallies and hits so damn clean. Fed just does not have the shot tolerance.

It's a miracle that the final was that close. Attribute that to Fed being on fire while Djok was not on his A game (except for tiebreakers when it really counted).

Racquet may not really make a difference. Loss of foot speed does not entirely explain the shanks. Fed shanked even on balls hit right to him. He just cannot hang with Djok. Must serve big and force short rallies to even have a chance.

I don't know if any amount of headsize increase will reduce the shanking to be honest (disregard if new user troll post). Fed takes the ball early, and on grass sometimes the bounces are unpredictable. You're going to have the occasional shank when you play that way.

You could even argue a bigger racquet might create more shanks since he might be hitting more balls away from the sweetspot.

That shank resulted from running around the BH and trying to hit a reverse FH to a ball that cramped him for room because it was coming diagonally into him. It was a bad choice and even if he had made the shot, he was in a bad position in the doubles alley. His BH didn't hold up during the latter stages of the match so maybe that's why he decided do that.

Actually, Federer was a bit worse than 3. and 4. against Nadal. And still it got close.

You're off the mark by omitted the primary reason. The court.

There were tons and obviously poor bounces at Wimbledon on centre court - more than normal imo. Not hugely bad one which end the point instantly but ones which make an otherwise well set-up shot into a clanger. It happened to both Federer and Djokovic many times in the final.

I'm a Fed fan, hence my bias. But there are tons of matches I've watched where my anxiety just ramps up as he gets into rallies with Djoker and Nadal and to a lesser extent other great baseliners. I'm fearing the shank. But for this Wimbledon Final I did not feel this way. He really seemed to hold his own on the baseline. Yeah, some shanks but not rampant. Part of this is Djokovic was not on his A game. I'm still frustrated by the loss but on the other hand am amazed that this Old Dude was one point away from beating the number one player int the world primarily from the baseline.

Honestly, Federer did not play tremendously well in the final. He's had much better matches in my opinion. He stayed close because Djokovic didn't return his serve particularly well. I think Federer might have been capable of another gear if not for the length of the match/being less fit than his prime.

Shankerer has always appeared at unwelcome times, no matter the racquet. His precision-based game and whipping strokes make him prone to shanks.

Of course he shanks more in Novak matches. No one hits with more depth than Djokovic, and Fed refuses to cede any ground. Taking all those shots on the rise adds up, so the shanks will come.

Compare it to Nadal who keeps the ball much shorter, allowing Fed to step in a take a full swing much more often, resulting in fewer shanks.

Look where he is when he shanks it. Look what kind of shot he is trying to hit when he shanks it.

Maybe he should step 5 feet back and play a safe shot measured with Sw topspin.

Shanking has nothing to do with racquet size. It's the result of taking the ball on the rise. If you are slightly off you shank.

Watching the Fed-Dimitrov, I stand by my comment that Gederer has been shanking a lot more this year than last. I would add that in addition to a slightly larger head size, Fed should also consider reducing his racquet swing weight 6-8 pts for a little more maneuverability to hit in the sweetspot

this idea of going bigger head size is stupid. he shanks because of his swing path has so much wrist lag with an eastern grip. also the reason why he generates so much spin and drive. he dropped a fair amount of swing weight when going to the bigger size so he wouldn't lose head speed. If you want to see him stop shanking balls then you want him to change his style of play.
