All of time has not yet passed, so how can we possibly tell?

please do not derail this important thread about time, and goats, and futility, and the inner workings of language. There are broader ideas at work here, mainly what is owed between us as a internet tennis society for our mutual illusions.

thank you

Back on topic: suppose time is a flat circle – does that mean Fed could be the new Ash Barty?

Is that a two dimensional circle or a three dimensional flat plate?

This doesn't align with my understanding of what all-time means but I guess you already know that. All-time is snappier than all-currently-elapsed-time.

But time is just a man made illusion to structure our lives and memories into what happened in the past and what happens now. That star in the night sky has collapsed in on itself into a supernova and all we re seeing is the past.... or is it the present? Everything you're seeing is in the present and is actually there, or is it? Is Federer Goat of all time? Does Sureshs even exist at all?

Sureshs is time and thus an illusion which was probably sculpted by stringertom.

is Federer even Federer anymore? If we take the guy who double-bageled Hewitt in the 04 USO final, most of the cells in that guy's body have now perished and been replaced by something else. His personality has changed enough that the two versions of him would be more like siblings. How can the Federer of today take credit for what the Federer(s) of 2004 did?

These are the questions that do not keep anyone up at night.

Did Federer become feder because of some Doppler effect ?

Is Syphus tryng to rech th sped o ligt to fnd aswr to qstn ?

Sysyphus, you know already that what is meant by all-time is the time until today. Nobody has seen the future 'cause it has not happened yet. We can only know who is an all time great by today only. Yes, Fedr and Surish are all time greats.

Future time is hypothetical, so he is a great of All-time existing.

Future time hypothetical my ass. I'm 100% sure that the sun will rise tomorrow in Rome. What? You think this is only hypothetical and not sure? OK, let's make a bet. I will give you 100.000 dollars if the sun doesn't rise tomorrow in Rome. On the other hand, you will pay me 100.000 dollars if the sun rises tomorrow in Rome.

If you don't want to bet is because you know future is not only "hypothetical" but something inevitable.

Only one thing in this world is definite, and that's death. Everything else has probability less than 1.0.

I think you are talking about probability. Anyway, the future has not come into existence yet, so he is indeed a great of all time existing.

I am residing in Madrid right now. I'm 100% sure the sun will rise tomorrow in this city. Do you want to bet? I will pay you 100.000 dollars if the sun doesn't rise tomorrow in Madrid. On the other hand, you will pay me 100.000 dollars if the sun rises tomorrow in Madrid. If you don't bet is because you know the sun will definetely rise tomorrow in Madrid. In other words, there are more definitive things than death.

I am not talking about probability, but certainty. Nobody believes the sun will not rise tomorrow in Madrid. That's why they don't bet 100.000 dollars with me.

Anyhow, I agree with your second statement "the future has not come into existence yet". That's obviously true.:p But it doesn't mean we cannot predict the future.

Probability of sun rising tomorrow = 1.0 - should be the case for the next 1-2 billion years or so until it goes supernova and engulfs the Earth.
Probability of dying at some point in future = 1.0

There aren't more definitive things than death, as that's just impossible to have a probability more than 1. And something are more likely to happen than others, by different margins. Does that mean they're certain? No. Many things can happen to stop the sun from 'rising' in Madrid. Yes. It most probably will (Something like 0.9 recurring) but who's to say some cataclysmic event won't occur ?

ha. lol..when the earth becomes carbonized (in 4bn years plus I think?) due to nasty horrid sun bereft of nuclear reactions and going surprisingly massive and hugely hugely bigly..who will the tennis goat?..

even as the earth burns up the debate will surely rage on. :D o_O unless nuclear war or aliens or summat else ends human life before then.
