Is Novak Djokovic the Manchester City of tennis?

Oceans II

Professional
Both:

- Arrived on the scene later but have broken or are in the process of breaking all the records
- Are elitely ran and coached (Djokovic nutrition and training, Pep Guardiola and Eithad Campus)
- Play a ruthlessly efficient style that just demoralises opponents
- Target and go deep at all major competitions
- Have likely the highest peak (Man City 11/12, 13/14, 17/18, 18/19, 22/23). Liverpool @ Man City 2-1 18/19 probably the highest quality match ever played.
- Have likely faced the strongest competition (Man United 11/12, Liverpool 13/14, Chelsea 13/14, Liverpool 18/19 in particular, Liverpool 21/22)
- Have won major titles by slim margins (Man City PL 11/12, 13/14, 18/19, 21/22)

Discuss. ;)

Yes. Man City and Novak Djokovic are both now established winners. I hope City wins the treble and Novak takes the slam record.

In fact before rose to top at same time. 2011 was Novak breakthrough year and 2011/2012 was when city won their first premier title.

A lot of football fans are envious of City just like a lot of tennis haters are envious of Djokovic becoming the goat.

I like the fact that both Man City and Djokovic are seen as the anti-Christ to media and football/tennis fans and anger establishments.

Wow and this was supposed to be a compliment? An oil club with no history who have a losing record to Spurs of all clubs during this time frame (from the Crouch goal in 2010 to the 0-2 record this year)?

And not to mention they never won the CL which is like if Djokovic never won a Slam.

Wow man. OP couldn’t have scored a bigger own goal if he was Harry Maguire lol.

Real Madrid won their 14th CL last year, defeated Manchester City in SF.

Nadal won his 14th RG last year, defeated Djokovic in QF.

Close.

City’s post 2011 success can be put down entirely to their massive oil money and billions of pounds spent, as they are the richest club in the world.

Many pundits have called this “financial doping”

Is OP implying a similar “advantage” has taken place to transform his idol in 2011?

City have plenty of history. They won a couple of league titles in past and making their own history now. Some clubs have spent just as much as city and not been as successful
City won their first Premier League title back in 2011, after becoming an oil club. Their latest league title before that was back in 1968. I do agree that they're making their own history now, with oil money.

The only 3 clubs that have spent over a billion dollars in transfers over the last 10 years are Manchester City, Manchester United, and PSG. PSG (also an oil club), has won more domestic titles than City over the last 10 years. So, the only club that has spent as much as City and hasn't been as successful is Manchester United.

City really were clutch in 11/12 , 13/14 , 18/19 and 21/22.

They could have lost all 4 if they were not. Razor close in all cases.

I was thinking of the pre 90s stuff.
Takes me back to playing football in the youth club in the 90s. I was making some saves and there was a City fan in the place. Bless that guy because he was a fan before they got good. But anyway, I made the saves and he said I'm playing like Tony Coton. Pretty sure this was around the time Coton got in the team of the season.

I know money does wonders but a huge turn around from City.

Aguero coming in was were it all started.

Good comparison.
Both have oil reserves on the one hand and magic potions on the other, which gives them a lot of superiority over the rest of the competition.

I have no complaints about where City got their money or the big money spent. Not going to pretend I'm some morally rich upstanding citizen. hmm, Citizen might be the wrong word. If you're going to spend it , spend it well. They have, we haven't.

Shows you City have a good eye for spotting and grabbing the best players.
