Mary Ann Carillo should be fired

Did everyone see how she reacted when Jelena tried to thank her coach and her mother during the USO womens final trophy ceremony? Carillo is classless and should be fired for her lack of grace. And it's not that she was so eager to cut away from Jankovic but how she reacted when Jelena had a few more words to say. First she made a gesture as if she was surprised/reluctant to let Jelena keep talking and then she even said "you still going?" and then "do you want that check or not?". To be fair her comments might have been tongue in cheek, but they were still inappropriate. Then when Jelena just made a happy comment Carillo actually put her hand up and told her to "hold on, hold on" (effectively "shut up, shut up").

Carillo should be fired. No ands, ifs or buts.

Well it's safe to say that if these boards were in charge we would have been rid of this Carillo problem long ago.

Cheers to Carillo getting canned more sooner then later.

I saw that and was shocked that she could be so rude to JJ. She couldnt even thank all of the people she wanted to thank. As drakulie says, "I hate that man". Carillo is absolutely horrible at everything.

Agreed. Carillo butchered the presentation by attempting to cut off Jankovic before she could even thank anyone. What a joke, Carillo's an idiot.

She's so glib. She routinely tries her best to act all cool, but ends up looking like she wants to be bigger than the game/the players.

You know what? I bet the suits at CBS Sports don't fire her. She's verry well-liked at HBO and NBC.
Bob Costas, Frank DeFord and Bryant Gumbel all absolutely adore her. Even McEnroe's been nicer to her of late.
She's a free agent, basically, and is strangely in high demand.

I'm not a fan, but, let's face it, she is smart, very literate, and she's been around a booth for a lot of years.

I wonder what Jankovic was thinking...maybe something like, "Yeah, I've met this person and I know I ought to be nice to heem, but, this is odd....it's nothing like the other Slams."

I'm sure the excuse was that TV coverage was going to end soon.

But, it still came across as very rude.

You are correct--network demands force the on-air talent to wrap it up while getting to the money shots all at the same time. I've witnessed rushing of this nature before when the network commentator is on the ground during the presentation.

Well, I figure if MSNBC can demote both Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann (happened this morning) :) for being total Obama tools/fools, CBS can demote Mary Carillo.

Jelena was nervously rambling-on. TV has time schedules to (try) and maintain.

Mary may have chosen better wording to move on, but Jelena was going-on like a nervous school girl. As Jelena gets into -- and wins -- more Majors, she'll be more polished....

I think Mary was annoyed by the fact that Jelena interrupted her about how much her check was when she was presenting Serena's prize money.

They should encourage aces and serve and volley plays to end points shorter. Jankovic's speech and personality made it a little bit more fun than the 2 weeks of women's tennis.

Some of you should re-watch the trophy presentations from CBS in year's past.

Its always very brief & players aren't generally given the opportunity to 'thank' anyone, they just answer a few questions. Its really nothing like the other slams' trophy presentations.

And this is the first time Mary Carillo has done it, its always Dick Enberg(& before him Tony Trabert), so she may not know how to do this sort of thing(the fact that she didn't announce how much prize money Jankovic was getting - a major part of any trohpy presentation, esp with this USO Open Series stuff - shows that she is a novice at this sort of thing)

Jankovic actually got to say more than Sampras & many other USO champs got to say in years past. CBS cut away from the final the second Becker beat Lendl in '89, & Mats in '88 got to say like 2 words before they ended the tropy presentation(and this was after 5 hour final!) CBS dictates everything about the USO, & their programming time is limited, they are willing to show live tennis as long as it goes, but hearing players thank their coach is not a priority over pre-empting Cold Case, 60 minutes, any longer than is necessary.

Carillo had someone in her ear telling her to speed things up, so her attitude towards Jankovic wasn't personal, if anything her mocking attitude last night was meant more for CBS than Jankovic.

Blame CBS, not Carillo.

And that goes for any criticism of any network, its odd how many here don't seem to realize that commentators are just employees, they really have no say at all in what matches you see, or the schedule, or the trophy presentation, etc. Plus this final was meant to be shown on Saturday, not Sunday, so that really made it harder for CBS to adhere to its normal Sunday night schedule(esp on the west coast)

The TV producers & network heads you never see control everything you see during a sporting event, & often are responsible for the questions players are asked as well.

Its sort of funny that some of you think Carillo should be fired for this when she was specifically instructed to keep things brief by her producer last night & tried, but Jankovic grabbed the mike from her(which I've never seen at the USO before, again another reason Carillo seemed amused)

didn't see it but this article gives a somewhat different version of the events:

Interesting article from a different perspective, although the female's illustrations I found rather unnecessary, i.e. what does being a bride have to do with Jelena's response...?

I've become non-commital about Mary Carillo. I liked her in the past, and enjoyed her commentary when teamed with Drysdale and Stolle on numerous occasions but I think the requirements by networks has changed her style. As someone mentioned, networks set the requirements for what is said, asked, etc, especially timing.

I think one of the reasons she is still around so prominently is that she is willing to adapt. Rather like many fiction writers these days who are required by publishers to write novels centred around vampires and were-beasts. These topics are popular with a large percentage of readers. Writers have to change and adapt or lose their contracts. Carillo has been adapting to keep on the job, not always to some viewers tastes.

I especially loved when Carillo called the dancing fans "knuckleheads". Did she forget that there were quite a lot of those "knuckleheads" wearing earpieces and listening to her comments?

That was very bad I was literally floored how she kept cutting Jelena off. Then Jelena asked how much her check was going to be and Carillo goes.. "don't you keep up with this stuff?"

I saw it and it was just as I surmised, much ado about nothing. If anything Carillo saved Jelena from turning into her country man, Djokovic.

"I have so many injuries, my leg, my back, shoulder, knee, the crowd was against me. . . " that was her next comment.
