McEnroe expects Serena to beat him in a tennis match

Serena WOULD beat him. At Mac's age, Serena should be able to beat him simply by moving the ball around and tracking down more shots than him. Movement is the alpha and omega in tennis and that would make the difference.

Mac is such a Carnival Barker. Imagine if he would have put this much effort in his prime? We would be talking about Federer chasing him. What an incredible waste of one's talent. Mac was kissed by the Tennis Gods and didn't have the good sense to use it to the fullest.

But I will give him this: He's a genius in making people forget what an absolute tool he was.

Bravo Mr. McEnroe. Well played.

In watching the Legends/Old Timers/Powershares Series tour, whatever they call it, McEnroe has slowed down quite a bit in the last couple of years. To beat Serena he'd need to end the point within 3 or 4 shots.

Bobby Riggs was 55 when he crushed Margaret Court but then was stomped by Billie Jean King. Mac is 58 already.

How old was BJK in that match?

Does anyone have full footage of the match?

Were any special regulations in play? Connors beat Navratilova in straight sets even with her having larger court to hit to and Connors having just one serve!

haven't been keeping up with the seniors tour lately. Is Mac the best over 55 player around these days?

Saw him play in January in person, Serena would beat him.

Wouldn't surprise me since I remembers seeing him play vs the Poo before the AO a few years ago, and he was stiff and running in slow motion and couldn't hit 2 shots in a row in bounds.

Roddick, Blake, Courier, and He were there. He was marginally better than Blake (who absolutely sucked!)

Even I would be Serena today given she is 7 months preganant.

As the wise owl above said, movement is everything!

McEnroe's a feeder. This is just giving him energy while he sits back and watches people argue over his trash.

They certainly read the tennis forums.

McEnroe wouldn't be 1200th, he would be lower ranked. Serena also couldn't rank as high as 700.

I think 1200 actually is possible. borgs ranking was around there during his 1991 comeback and he didn't win a single match. i assume he got his atp point (s) just from wildcards in main draws..
if you win a match or two at a challenger event im sure that's another way to get there..

Borg was 35 when he made that comeback.... McEnroe is 58. HUGE difference.

Also, interesting point you make about just needing one match win to get some ranking points. All Serena would need is a WC into an ATP500 and to be drawn against Bernard Tomic in the 1R and he'd just tank the match away and thus give her 45 ranking points - around 600 in the world :p :p

I saw Mac play live as well on the Powershares series. He's pretty slow now.
Yeah, I wouldn't at all be surprised if Serena could beat him. He gets gassed easily too. Depends on how she could handle his serve, I suppose. She doesn't see anything like that on the women's tour. The way Mac plays too, it's too easy to pass him now that he's slowed down several steps. To play that kind of serve and volley game, you've got to have fast reflexes, and those slow down with age.

That said, I think Mac's getting a raw deal on this. The reporter lady totally led him into this. He said she was the greatest female tennis player ever, but the reporter wasn't satisfied with that. She wanted him to say she was the best tennis player ever. I don't blame him for balking at that.

The question could be, did Serena dominate her era more than Fed? IN that sense she might be the greatest. It was McEnroe who went straight to comparing them head to head.

Maybe the spin he puts on the serve is something special to her but she probably serves faster than McEnroe (she serves faster than a lot of guys). Maybe his serve and volley tactics would throw her off. That would even surprise most men.

Still think Serena would win. Brute strength > strategic grandpa

McEnroe to appear on ESPN's Dan Lebatard Show in 25 minutes.

McEnroe must have asked the Shows Producers Not To Ask Him About The Serena Incident. Lebatard Joked About It Saying There Was A Question He Was Forgetting To Ask Mack...haha, But All They Did Was Talk Knicks basketball..and Of Course Macks Wonderful Book.

Standard Bo5, aged 29, won in straight sets (6-4 6-3 6-3). She just played smart. Also, Court at the time was #1 in the world and won 3 of the 4 majors.

Serena may beat McEnroe but she is not sure of the outcome herself.
That is why she doesn't sign up for to play McEnroe.
Such a match for sure would result in a huge pay day for both participants.
McEnroe has always wanted to play Serena.
If he loses, it's expected but if Serena loses, it's a big deal and it would go down as
a defeat for the women's tennis movement.

It would be a no win situation, as much as many fans (and even non fans) would want to see it.

If Serena wins, she's beaten a guy pushing 60.
If Mac wins, he's a chauvinist pig.

Well, that's the argument. That she dominated her era more than any other tennis player. I'm not even sure that's true for the women, although it's certainly arguable. To me, the most impressive thing about Serena is her longevity, how well she's played at an old age (for tennis). But the reporter wanted him to say she was the greatest tennis player ever, instead of the greatest female tennis player ever. Either she didn't know what she was talking about (that she thought Serena could beat the top men), or else Mac misunderstood what she meant. It wasn't that he went out of his way to insult her, he just responded to the question he was asked.

I'm sure there are people here willing to say that Serena is the greatest tennis player ever. I understand the argument for it, but I don't think I'd be comfortable saying it.

I would put my money on her over Mac though. Mac said he gets winded playing one set. I do think he's better than Riggs was when he played Billie Jean King, but he's just too old, IMO.

Yes, Serena dominated her era more than Federer his era. Serena has won 23 Grand Slams and at least 3 Grand Slam titles on any surface (hard, grass and clay). Federer only has 1 French Open. The excuse that he faced Nadal is not valid. Under that excuse, Nadal would have 5 Wimbledon if not for Federer and Djokovic.

And men play best of out 5 in slams and at a much MUCH higher level. Your argument is invalid.

If played on current known form, McEnroe thinks he will be ranked 1200 on the ATP tour and we know he already said Serena would be 700.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/john-mc...e-for-controversial-serena-williams-comments/

If JMac was in his early 50s, I believe that he could take Serena. AT 58, not so certain. Keep in mind that suggesting that he would rank 1200 vs 700 for Serena, is not the same thing as saying Serena would beat him. I believe that Serena would be able to stand the daily/weekly grind on the tour better than Mac. But, for a single match, he could possibly still take her.

Nerves would be a huge factor in said match. Who would hold there nerve best if said match did occur? Mack choked against a great Ivan Lendl at the French Open. Serena choked horribly against a 43rd ranked player with the U.S Open and a CYGS on the line. I think an aged and mellowed McEnroe would win the battle of nerves. I would like to have Shino call the lines, to keep things fair, if this match does materialize.

my first opinion was serena would win. but if mac completely junk balled her with slices, angles, dropshots, moonballs, SABRs, etc.. maybe he would have a shot. even tho mac is old & slow, i think he's very good at giving his opponent shots they don't want to hit
