I missed the match but wow. Fognini has beat Nadal like 3 times on clay now. So it will be Lajovic or Fognini for MC title. Who saw this coming because I didn't. What happened to Medvedev because Lajovic sent him packing easily.

Say what you will about Nadal's play, but Fognini hit the ball quite well today. I don't see any game that Nadal has at this point in his career beating Fabio when he hits winners like today. Now, please don't flame out in the final. Hopefully, this version of Fabio shows up again. BLNT, Nadal. Nice play, Fabio.

Some people will say that the wind beat Rafa. But the Fog was a bigger factor. The Fog hit some 100 mph winners in the match. 100 mph Fog> 30 mph wind.

Monte Carlo needs to turn on the sirens. There is a nasty storm coming. It is called the Fog. The Fog is extremely dangerous now. I recommend that everybody seeks shelter, including Lajovic. The Fog will pass. But until then, stay away.

So, is that the token loss for Rafa on clay, as every year? This time him winning Barcelona, Madrid, Rome and RG?

What a match. Fognini scared me a bit when he choked away the first time serving for it, but man he deserved this win for sure. Great stuff from him.

No, this has a totally different feel to it. Nadal looked slow, tentative and completely off his game. Sure, some of it was the wind and Fog's aggressive play, but Nadal hasn't looked this bad on clay since 2015.

Looked like another AO final situation to me. Steamrolls a bunch of deceptively bad journeymen and then gets totally annihilated by the first quality, in form opponent he comes across.

Well in Nadal's previous clay losses I can usually say he did something well. Like sometimes he faced a redlining opponent and he was still defending well, but it wasn't enough. Today he did nothing well. First time I've seen that on clay. Worse than 2015 I think.

Nadal nowadays reminds me of Federer in 2014 or 2015 or whatever. He had that period where he would annihilate guys like Mischa Zverev or fringe top 15 guys, but was still vulnerable to good players as you say.

And he was only 29 then. At nearly 33, it's expected his level will drop, even on clay. You're right: today Rafa did nothing well, except perhaps an adequate ROS, but Fab's serve is awfully weak.

Rafa did not play well for sure, and whatever the reason, but today’s win was definitely because of Fabio.

I’m currently at Mallorca, Rafas home as you know, and it’s been storming with really unstable weather for the past two days. I feel as if this is most likely connected to his play and current form. I have no science to prove this but....what else could it be?!
