In what year did the top player get the most ATP points? Let's see.

no.1: 2015 (16,585)
top-2: 2015 (25,530)
top-3: 2015 (33,975)
top-4: 2015 (40,840)
top-5: 2015 (46,070)
top-6: 2015 (50,690)
top-7: 2015 (54,995)
top-8: 2015 (59,230)
top-9: 2015 (62,080)
top-10: 2015 (64,715)

So 2015 takes them all.

Let's compare it to years usually considered strong (you know why? because top players won a lot, therefore had a lot of points):

2009

no.1: 10,550
top-2: 19,755
top-3: 28,065
top-4: 35,095
top-5: 41,880
top-6: 46,810
top-7: 51,220
top-8: 54,630
top-9: 57,930
top-10: 60,805

2011

no.1: 13,630
top-2: 23,225
top-3: 31,395
top-4: 38,775
top-5: 43,700
top-6: 48,035
top-7: 51,735
top-8: 54,700
top-9: 57,295
top-10: 59,675

2012

no.1: 12,920
top-2: 23,185
top-3: 31,185
top-4: 37,875
top-5: 44,380
top-6: 49,060
top-7: 53,540
top-8: 57,030
top-9: 60,020
top-10: 62,535

2015 was really top heavy, huh. Back in the day, the tour was said to have a lot of "strength in depth," meaning that the top players did not dominate to such an extent. Alas, the past 15 years have had little strength in depth.

By the way, please use commas rather than decimal points for numbers in the thousands. I know that other languages use decimal points. But it makes it hard to follow in English.

You have to consider how many points were taken away by the no.1

For example 2009's no.1 beat 3 times no.2-3, while 2015's no.1 beat 11 times no.2-3.

Is it accurate to include the number ones point total when talking about his competition?

The tour is more than 10 players as well just FYI.

It is accurate to see how many points were taken away by the no.1.

There's no guarantee who wins what matches if Djokovic is removed. Even assuming a top 10 player would pick up all the points the tour is more than just 10 players.

Is 2009 really the 4th best year?

Let's see 2013:

no.1: 13,030
top-2: 25,290
top-3: 31,090
top-4: 36,880
top-5: 42,135
top-6: 46,340
top-7: 50,520
top-8: 54,250
top-9: 57,550
top-10: 60,615

and this is 2009:

no.1: 10,550
top-2: 19,755
top-3: 28,065
top-4: 35,095
top-5: 41,880
top-6: 46,810
top-7: 51,220
top-8: 54,630
top-9: 57,930
top-10: 60,805

no.1: 2013 > 2009 (big margin)
top-2: 2013 > 2009 (big margin)
top-3: 2013 > 2009 (big margin)
top-4: 2013 > 2009
top-5: 2013 > 2009
top-6: 2009 > 2013
top-7: 2009 > 2013
top-8: 2009 > 2013
top-9: 2009 > 2013
top-10: 2009 > 2013

2013 has a better top-5 and a much better top-2, therefore it is fair to say it was a better year.

So I would say

1) 2015
2) 2012
3) 2011
4) 2013
5) 2009

Yeah I know, the weak era GOAT won 1 slam in the four best years to Djokovic's 8 and Nadal's 4.
And it's only by your cherry-picked "analysis" 2015 is supposedly the best year ever... LOL. At the time people were talking about how crap it was.

And it wasn't just Federer fans. It was EVERYONE besides Djokovic fans.

Like I said many times, I'm a Hewitt fan first and foremost and when it comes to debates around the best of the best I like to think I'm quite objective, although possibly slightly biased towards Federer because I appreciated his era the most.

So you can't lump me in as a Federer fan.

Then you have fans of Simon, Ferrer, Rios, ect. I think they would be objective in their own way too. There's no agenda.

Everyone besides hardcore Djokovic fans were saying it wasn't a great period. The stats you push out don't change what the landscape was like.

Besides that welcome back to the forum. I hope you know I never tried to insult you. In fact you called me an idiot quite a few times. :-D

I don't really care, I think when top players dominate the level is high, and ATP points are a good measure.

Just like I don't care about your stats.

Why don't you think when Federer dominated the level was high then? Why is it only Djokovic? Why not Sampras? Have you measured anything from Sampras' era and compared it to Federer's for instance? You can't do better than what hasn't happened yet.

You are not Lew.

There was a consistency to Lew's bias. They all circled around 2011 and 2012. He would not make an argument for 2015, certainly not at the expense of 2012 and never ever 2011. He was actually getting to be rather good fine tuning his arguments, while you're starting out easy. That's okay, except the way you're going about it undermines months of his efforts.

Hey @Lew what are some of your thoughts on 2012?

I believe it was the only year where each member of the Big 4 nabbed a slam.

What were ELO ratings in 2012 and what if any conclusions might be inferred within that season?
As you can see here

https://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/index.php?threads/most-gs-wins-by-year-top10.629649/

among the 2000s, 2012 is the year the best 10 players won most GS matches (161). Here are all the records:

top-2 : 2011 (49 wins)
top-3 : 2011 (70)
top-4 : 2011 (90)
top-5 : 2011 (104)
top-6 : 2011 (117)
top-7 : 2011 (127)
top-8 : 2012/2015 (137)
top-9 : 2012 (149)
top-10 : 2012 (161)
Might it follow that if we are to infer data about players and patterns and matchups that 2012 can be said to be when all members of the Big 4 were closest within each other to their peaks?

Ergo, 2012 is the year to look for detailed analysis within the rivalries?
2011 and 2012.

And Lew was an expert at pointing stats where he wanted them to lead.

His entire premise began and ended with weakera. With competition. That was his argument for Djokovic.

Your argument for 2015 damages a lot of good work he put in towards developing that argument.

You are not Lew.

I always wrote 2015 had strong competition, I don't understand your surprise.

That's well and fine but I happened to like Lew. He was extremely biased but he had his own style in the forum and to me was a good Djokovic fan. Let's say that you are Lew, let's work with that for a moment, I hope you're able to improve on the work the original Lew - this time not allowing yourself to get upset when people probe the bias.
