Nadal on his way to a Wooden Spoon (AO '16)

Tenez!

Nadal loses to Nando 1R
...who loses to Dudi 2R
...who loses to Kuznets' 3R
...who loses to La Monf' 4R
...who loses to Wawa QF
...who loses to Muzzah SF
...who loses to Joker F

There's a little uncertainty concerning good ol'Stanislas, but I really believe Rafa can overcome his blockage and make his first GS wooden spoon!

Somebody who loses in the 1st round to a guy who then loses in the next round to a guy who then loses in the next round and so on and so forth right up until the final guy loses in the final! :)
Thank you :) (Is it a British expression?)

Good catch! If Fed beats Andy in the final Nadal will still get the spoon. That would be sweet.

This now has a REAL chance of happening. Milos taking out Monfils, Murray taking out Milos, Djokovic/Federer taking out The Muzziah of tennis

I was thinking about it just didn't know how to name the thread :D

So Monfils would have to lose to Raonic (probable)
Raonic would have to lose to Murray (probable)
Murray would have to lose to Djokovic (probable)

Even when he's not in it and long after he hit his last forehand DTL Nadal is still the most exciting talking point of the Australian Open. Right @Krish872007 ?

RAFA has already won this Australian Open and the moral Double Career Slam.
"Novack" Djokovic, Federer and Murray are participating in some meaningless exhibition and wasting time while RAFA is sharpening his weapon for Roland Garros.
A 10th title at Roland Garros and 10th victory over Djokovic (10-4 in Slams) is the next target for the untiring RAFA

The QF for the wooden spoon right now are:

Jiri Vesely
Benoit Paire
Julien Benneteau
Borna Coric
Rafael Nadal
Taylor Fritz
Steve Darcis
Fabio Fognini

I think by looking at this draw Rafa is the favourite here, although Fognini has a shot at beating him in the semis.

EDIT: there should be an alternate wooden spoon draw sheet from now on in every major.

That SO needs to happen!
Let me dig through the files and see who past champions were.

Interesting list. Safin is obviously the biggest name on there, especially as neither J. Johansson nor Davydenko became a name until later in their careers. Haas is also a big name.

But a few others that are very worthy of note:
1. Rainer Schüttler was runner-up at the 2003 Australian Open. The following year, he won the wooden spoon.
2. Cedric Pioline was semi-finalist at the 1999 US Open. The following Slam, he won the wooden spoon.
3. Fernando Gonzalez was runner-up at the 2007 Australian Open. The following Slam, he won the wooden spoon.
4. Schüttler and Gonzalez (and Joachim Johansson) have won two Slam wooden spoons.

I am sure this will be a moral victory of sorts for Rafa.

I am sure Federer got a wooden spoon in Madrid last year, I know it is not a slam, but still. Anyone confirm this?

federer, sampras, etc. may be great... but they never achieved what rusedski did : defending his USO wooden spoon (1994-1995) ! ;)

My old thread! Thanks man.

Hope it happens, Rafa is a fantastic player, he deserves one last crowning achievement before he leaves us.
Who knows, he may even pull a Penneta after he wins it and bow out among the resounding cheers.

RAFA can also join Marat Safin as one of 2 elite Slam winners to have also won the Wooden Spoon in the last 15-20 years.

Will the 2016 Australian Open be added to Nadal's list of players he loses to who go on to lose and on all the way to the champion?

2016 Australian Open - Nadal loses to Verdasco, Verdasco Loses to Sela, Sela loses to Kuznetsov, Kuznetsov loses to Monfils, Monfils?

2015 Wimbledon - Nadal loses to Brown, Brown loses to Troicki, Troicki loses to Pospisil, Pospisil loses to Murray, Murray loses to Federer, Federer loses to Djokovic.

2015 Australian Open - Nadal loses to Berdych, Berdych loses to Murray, Murray loses to Murray

2014 Wimbledon - Nadal loses to Krygios, Krygios loses to Raonic, Raonic loses to Federer, Federer loses to Djokovic

Federer had a QF loss at 2013 French Open at 2011 Wimbledon that led to the champion
Djokovic had a QF loss at 2009 Australian Open that led to the champion
