A few days ago, Roger stated he can't beat either Novak or Rafa at RG, and that he's saving himself for Wimbledon.

But are we to believe that in his actual form, he would be able to beat them there ?

Is this all wishful thinking ? In what state would his knees be should he enter the semis at W ??

Your opinion ?

Djokovics form is woobly since the start of clay season. Nadal too is struggling with consistency in the past 2 months. Federer before French open was nowhere close to even his 50%. He played better than i expected in this years French open.

So can he beat Nadal/Djokovic in Wimbledon this year ?
He can beat Nadal but to beat djokovic he needs to be at his absolute best. If he matches his 2019 level (where he held 2 MPs to beat them back 2 back) he can beat them. But anything less than that will be tough for him specially against djokovic.

We can asses more of his form in grass and his chances by seeing his run in the upcoming ATP 500 in Halle.

In all honesty I get this sneaky feeling he will repeat 2019 result.

His strokes were there and so was his serve. His movement wasn't but he can net rush and beat 125/128 players. (I am adding Medvedev to the list of Djokodal)

Against the three he has a strong against Meddal if his movement and stamina is okay.

Against Djokovic, well he will lose in straight.

No chance at all
Djokodal would destroy him.
Fed would get blown off court at Wimbledon by Djokovic.

"Does Federer stand a chance at this Wimbledon?" would be the better question.

If the point of playing RG was to get some match play in and work out the kinks, was that even achieved? What's more, his last match was a nightmare. He was an error machine, and he looked gassed. Can that lack of match fitness be eradicated in three weeks?

Look, he knows best as to how to prep for a Slam he's won eight times already. WTF do I know about it? But why not just head to the grass early as he's done in the past. If anything, he's exposed just how vulnerable he is right now. And the entire tour got to see it on TV. That should increase every opponent's confidence against him, not just Nadal's and Djokovic's.

For heaven's sakes, Sampras and Navratilova's serve and shots are still there. Probably Laver's too. Players die when they can't move any more. They don't get to the ball in time any more and the timing errors creep in, they recover late and get run ragged.
Federer is in the death throes now. His remaining career is no more than a few weeks long.

He 'can' - in the sense that I can see a miracle run where his draw falls apart and his QF seed is someone like Schwartzman and he plays Nadal/Djokovic in the SF. He showed enough at RG to convince me he has the talent to do this, and honestly if he avoids a big serving bot I would actually bet on him to make the QFs. Does he have the legs? Time will certainly tell, he has another month until Wimbledon.

Djokovic deals with him pretty easily in 9/10 potential meetings and Nadal in 8/10 meetings, but I could see an off Djokodal and an on-point Federer going to 4 or 5 and if Federer's serve is truly firing, he could pull it off. I just think both players can smell blood far too easily not to exploit his obvious movement deficiencies and hurt his confidence. They both know how to extend points and will try to wear Roger down. Younger players might shrink at the moment, though, so he does have a chance to win Wimbledon if the draw falls apart.

LOL what? Tsitsipas leads the race and is at his absolute physical peak. Federer is nearing 40 and looked sub-par at RG (unforced error machine, ineffective backhand and and weak stamina).

Unless Federer significantly increases his level from what we observed at RG, Tsitsipas is the clear and undeniable favorite over him at WB (and any other Slam for that matter).

That's why I LOLed. The idea that this Federer could beat Tsitsipas literally made me laugh out loud.

For Federer fans convinced of the 2nd coming, you can get 9/1 to win Wimbledon from the bookies, though I advise waiting until after Halle when the odds will be closer to 20/1.

I think he would be firm favourite against Nadal.

Djokovic would be much harder but if Novak had one of his off days...

The thing is that NextGen looks like bambi on ice playing grass tennis. In theory Tsitsipas should be an excellent grass player, he is a strong server and has a good net game.

But Tsitsipas, Zverev, Thiem, Shapo, Medvedev, all of nextgen basically lost before the 3R at 2019 Wimbledon. They all lack grass experience and comfort level. That's why Federer is getting hype like this, because NextGen has zero experience on grass.

All of those players currently move 100x better than Federer. Federer still has the serve and the shots obviously, that is not in doubt, but if you cannot get to the ball, make the shot and recover quickly you are dead, especially on grass. Clay gives you so much more time because the ball checks on landing and yet Federer looked slow, heavy footed and cumbersome. I don't know if you have played grass court tennis but the secret is getting low and staying low. It's not bending, it's crouching. It's like doing deep squats for 2 hours, murder on the quads, IT band, hamstrings, glutes and terrible for the knees. He is literally a dead man walking against anyone even halfway competent.

Nah, don't think so.

:-D so that's why you're so butthurt Fed didn't grind his knees into dust on clay.

You're actually scared the old man might pull off a miracle and win Wimbledon.

I think even with great form, I don’t think he has the stamina or court coverage anymore in long matches. Let alone in later rounds against Nadal or Djokovic.

Yes he can beat both. I'm not saying it's likely of course. But Fed is the GOAT for a reason.... never count the GOAT out

No, it's because I don't like to see players disrespecting the game of tennis, just because they think they are more important than the game.

Could he? Yes
Will he if required to this year? I honestly don't know. He didn't look anything close to even his pre-covid self at this years RG. I think if he had gone out and played Berrettini he probably would have been smoked off the court, I think in some ways he was lucky he survived the 3rd round. He just didn't look like the Fed we know. I think his body still needs more time, and can it actually happen in what...a month? I just don't know.

Well, this isn't even the 2019 version of Federer that was winning 25+ shot rallies against Nadal / Djokovic. Still a lot of work to do and he needs to be very careful that he doesn't exit early in Halle because it'll mean appearing at Wimbledon with very limited match play.
He can still serve and attach of the first couple of shots very well and that should be fine for early rounds. Against Nadal - requires better movement and solid, consistent execution, so there's a chance but we need to see a lot more from him. Against Djokovic - will be exceptionally tough.

It’s just a game played with two people beating a fuzzy ball over a net. There is nothing mystical about it so that you claim he’s disrespecting “the game”.

You are only as good as your last match. Federer withdrew from his, and he was struggling vs Koepfer. Let's wait to see him finish Halle first.

2019 Fed reached SF at the FO, his game/fitness/everything was in much, much better shape. I'm sure he'd love be in the same situation now where his body is concerned.

Maybe it would have helped if he pulled out of AO 2020 - not sure exactly when the injury surfaced but it's done quite a bit of damage

Meh, it's mostly hindsight honestly. Not sure one more match did all that damage. He was already 38-39 in 2020 and with all that mileage, there's always a chance something's gonna give up.

Fed's game being effortless and injury free has always been a bunch of bull too. Dude has had plenty of injuries throughout his career (even back in 2004-2005 for example), he just usually soldiered on and played a full season anyway. He couldn't have lasted forever.
