Rafael Nadal considering skipping US Open or French Open this year, says his uncle Toni

Rafael Nadal is considering his scheduling options and may opt to skip a Grand Slam, according to his uncle Toni Nadal.

Toni coached Rafael Nadal from a young age and is now director of the Spaniard’s academy in Mallorca.

And he says that the world number two, who will be asked to defend both the US Open and French Open titles within the space of four weeks later this year, is worried about the physical demands that would place on him.

“I have spoken to Rafa and he is doubting which tournaments to play,” Toni told ESPN Deportes.

“The schedule is unrealistic, especially for veteran players, who cannot compete for so many weeks in a row.

“I think it is a bit ugly what the ATP has done. This decision is totally against players like Rafa and Novak [Djokovic].

“With everything they have done for tennis for years, I am surprised that they do this.

“I think it would be key to raise something regarding the calendar because it is not feasible to concentrate so many tournaments in such a short time.”

Nadal is not only defending his titles at the US Open and the French Open, but also 2000 [4000] ranking points.

He'll play both. Same as every top player. These constant headlines about uncertainty mean next to nothing.

It's absurd to think either Ralph or Nolan can't physically handle 2 majors in that time span. And equally absurd to think the ATP owes them anything just because they're older players now. The fact that either tournament is taking place at all is a gift to the two of them who are desperately trying to win the slam race.

This is an old interview, Toni gave the interview last week. It was discussed here:

Carlos Moya was interviewed in Palma last Friday (after Toni gave the interview). Moya said: "We haven't talked yet about the precise calendar...we need to sit down these next two weeks to see how we organize that calendar." [Translated from Spanish by monse]

I bet Rafa has told Toni to zip it.

The funny thing is that the constant headlines media makers are creating every day are based just on one Toni's interview he gave about 10 days ago.

I know your google alerts are only set to Raphael Nadal Rafa Vamos Toni Moya Mallorca, but believe it or not there's more to the tennis media than just The Nadal. There's been countless articles and tweets about players not named Nadal.

Well he can tie Connors-Sampras-Federer at the US Open, so it is more important to his legacy this year than Roland Garros. But, legacy doesn't always matter.
Anyway Toni has always had a much bigger mouth than a brain, so I'd take his comments with a grain of crap.

Players get better and better. Yet, they're lesser? Wait until Lew II and his brigade read this.

Who honestly thinks he’s gonna skip the French Open?

The Defending U.S. Open Champion will defend his crown.

A golden opportunity to pull off one of the most difficult achievements in tennis history: winning hard court and clay slams within the same month.

Rafa needs to stop whining and dig deep. He has had plenty of time to rest and get in shape. Do the needful. #20 and #21 awaits.

This is his chance to leave the hapless Fed in the dust once and for all in his rear view mirror.

It's actually a smart move to skip the UO for more than just injury/overplaying reasons.

Nadal handles Next Gen better than Djokovic. Djokovic has owned Nadal for a long time on HC. This isn't 2013 anymore. Better to let Next Gen take a shot at Djokovic than to lose in the final to him. Save yourself Nadal. It's the best strategy considering the big picture.

The Transatlantic Slam will be remembered as one of the most difficult tennis milestones to achieve.
Nadal is one of the few tennis players who could do it.

The funny thing is that you don't remember what you write! I commented on your words "...constant headlines..."

Nadal would be silly to skip the US Open. At least if he cares about the slam record. He's literally the favorite.
He may be silly to skip it (let’s wait and see what he does, uncle Toni may be grandstanding) but he’s not the favorite. Novak is.

Nadal should skip Madrid instead. Play Cincinnati, US Open, Rome and RG. Win the two Slams and prepare for 2021.
Only RG will be a slam.

Haven't you heard?

Not sure. Nadal is not Djokovic. When he says he might skip a tournament, he usually skips it. That's been the case 99% of the times.

You say that like Novak pretends that he's going to skip tournaments
Wasn't Djokovic saying he might skip USO some time ago, but now he wants to play it? Just like 2 years ago he was saying he might skip Wimbledon 2018. But I doubt he even thought for a moment about really skipping these slams. Unfortunately, this isn't the case with Nadal, who really skipped a lot of tournaments in his career.

IIRC that was in his post-match conference after losing at RG. He was obviously in a bad mood and just wanted to go home. The reporter asked about the grass season and I think he just said that as a way to end the conversation.
