How. Did. Dimitrov. Win. This.

Watched every point since 3-3 in the 3rd set, Anderson had a sitter lined up for a 7-5 5-7 6-4 win, way easier than Federer's 5th MP against Cilic. Then he netted 3 forehands in a row to hand Dimitrov the break back. Still, he was 2 decent serves away from winning this in the tie-berak.

That has to qualify as the choke of the year. In most of the chokes there's some sort of inability to close out matches, some random errors mixed with standard shots. This was 100% mental.

Not that I mind, thrilled to see Dimitrov through.

I wish Dimitrov didn't celebrate the way he did, pointing his head with his finger like he won the match. Sorry but he didn't win the match, Anderson lost it.
I'm sure most players would not have celebrated...the best in this case is to stay humble, just admit you got lucky.

yeah, that wasn't the classiest celebration. At least he didn't show it until Kevin was looking the other way.

Why is this Toronto crowd so loud & stupid/r3t4rt3d?
They seem a lot worse compared to the crowd at the US Open. Seem like drunk hockey fans to me...
And guys, shut up about Dimitrov.. He kept his head, that's what that celebration gesture was all about.
Can't you people work out anything?

Is it also weird to anyone else that there are so many 3-setters in this tournament? It's the same trend in the WTA tournament in Montreal as well.

No question it's their own fault and fair play to the winners. But thats independent of how tough the draw is.

Two things.
1) I agree with you that the rival did not "deserve" to make it further because its his own fault for losing. That still doesn't change the fact that the draw is weaker though because the rival isn't there.

2)Your Gonzalez example is different because as you mentioned he reached insane levels. That was clearly not an example of his top rivals playing below their best and Gonzalez squeaking by, it was an example of Gonzalez showing he had a level that could be akin to the 95 level. You have to watch the tournaments to see why the top rival is being upset, due to his bad play and hence creating a weaker draw, or because someone is playing amazing and hence keeping the draw level similar.

This is the point that makes the draw weak. The top level opponent was not provided for Federer. Kyrgios rested would have been a Gonzalez-eque level guy because he didn't beat a subpar Nadal, he played huge. However, he was gassed and hence opened up an easier path for Fed allowing a subpar level player through to the SF. Raonic was a 70esque type guy. Gonzalez at AO 07 was not. Baghdatis at AO 06 was.

Its the rivals own fault for their failures and the rivals might not have even won if they made it, but it doesn't change the fact that the path was made easier than a draw where you have to go through all the top guys playing well.

Sorry man, went to bed last night, had a match today been busy haha

I'm on my phone so bear with me.

I would say the draw is only 'weaker' if the rival were to peak, if he plays worse than Player 70 throughout the tournament then the draw is rather weaker. It's pure conjecture as to whether player 95 would peak later in the tournament,cc we may presume he would, but we don't know due to the fact Player 95 was knocked out, for all we know he could play even worse in the next round.

I'm torn on Kyrgios because yes he played Great vs Nadal, but up to the point where he played Gasquet and Vesely he wasn't playing as well as he did vs Nadal, we have no evidence that he could have reproduced such a display, which as you said was amazing tennis, like how Rosol couldn't replicate his play in the next round after he beat Rafa.

As for Raonic he actually played extremely well up to Fed and I'd say maybe 90% of Feds level or so, as with Kyrgios, again we have no idea what would have happened, he pulled out of tournaments post WO with a Hip Injury, so would he have been a better opponent vs Fed in actuality even though he was injured? It would have made Feds draw look even 'weaker' if Kyrgios had retired in the SF.

I supoose the end is the crux point, if the top guys are playing well its a loss, if they arent then the draw really isn't as affected by their absence.

2014 Rogers Cup champions

Jo Wilfried Tsonga

Alexander Peya / Bruno Soares

It was an interesting tournament. Certainly it wasn't the greatest in terms of level of play of the top players, but Tsonga's run made up for that and it's not like he's a lucky nobody either. It also didn't unfold well for the home favourite players, which really took away a lot of the buzz for me, but all in all it was a good tournament.

Sorry, this is just wrong. Its because of the level of top players that enabled his run. Djoko and Dimi were no shows, Murray form is questionable especially with the new coach. Fed probably wouldnt have made the final had the draw had even a glimmer of parity to it... JWT did what he needed but this was not close to his best tennis. Nice to get an opponent that hadn't played daytime conditions and get a semi thats a great practice duplicate of the finalist. Stars couldnt have been aligned any better for this "run".

Sure, he didn't beat Fed, Murray, Dimi and Fed, while all of them played their very best.
But part of that is Jo as well and either way, beating 3 guys with 26 slams between them in 4 days (+ a guy who most likely soon will have a slam a two) is damn impressive.

What were you watching? Regardless of how the top players were playing, Tsonga was very good this week. One can tell the difference between someone just taking advantage of an opponents' bad performance and someone who plays well in spite of it.

Tsonga played amazing tennis this week. His level wasn't as high for the final. In his defense, I think he made a conscious decision to be less aggressive. At some point it became clear that Federer could not maintain a long rally let alone hit winners past him.

Congrats to Mighty Jo. Well deserved title and expected result in the finals. Would have been very surprised if he had not won in straights against a washed up Fed after GOATing all week. Hope he can keep up the momentum going into the USO.
