Sasha Zverev's Finger Wagging

Am I the only one who thinks his finger wagging is the most annoying display of arrogance? Much worse than Djokovic tearing his shirt off or raising the roof.

Fed finger wags too, but it's not as showy as Zverev, and he can back it up with his greatness. It's too much too soon for someone to display that much arrogance.

I didn't like it. It reminded me of when McEnroe first played Becker in Milan in '85 before Boris won Wimbledon. Becker was trying to punk Mac during the changeovers and pulling other stunts on court. At the end of the match, Mac said to him, "You'd better win something before you start strutting around the court."

It's the same concept with Z. I get the impression he thinks he's a lot better than he actually is.

BTW, the American commentating team mentioned the finger wagging several times. Cahill thought it was "disrespectful coming from an untested player."

I hated it when Federer did it to Nole at 2011 FO semi win; have to be consistent! It's not very sporting; but IMO any histrionics outside of winning a tournament is superfluous! I'm from the very old school and I can't remember even throwing up my arms after winning as a kid! It was a gentleman's sport where it wasn't kosher to show up an opponent! I just wasn't into ridiculous gestures like that! :p ;)

It's not that bad, brings a reason to be emotionally involved in the match for fans giving a reason to cheer for or against him. It's fun to see how different people handle their emotions during matches and honestly, he should be banned from the sport for at least a few months (preferably years) for this kind of attitude, there's no place for it on the tennis court and finger wagging is often a metaphor for thinking you're better than not only the opponents but also the fans who, guess what buddy, literally pay each euro in those checks you receive.

What's he supposed to do? Wear the Sampras hangdog look?

Give the guy some credit. He's played some big time clutch points lately. I see nothing wrong with people waving the finger as long as it isn't the middle one.

I've seen many players pull out the finger wag, whether it's after match point or during the match. It didn't scream "arrogant SOB" to me, just another way to express their emotions after an important/brilliant point or a great win. A few examples...

Garcia Lopez against Nadal at Bangkok 2010
Willis against Federer at Wimbledon 2016
Bedene against Carreno Busta at FO 2016
Almagro against Carreno Busta at Estoril 2016
Blake against Llodra at Newport 2002
Darcis against Delbonis at Davis Cup
Berdych against Monfils at Monte Carlo 2015
Fognini against Nadal at USO 2015
Ferrero against Martin at USO 2003
Tsonga against Dolgopolov at Wimbledon 2010

There's ten players other than Fed, Djoker or Nadal.

Finger wagging esp in opponent face is not Djokoivc thing actually. First pumps and Idemoo are..
To each his own, as a way to express feelings during the match I don't like it. Zverev was particularly annoying lately with that ridicoulus finger wag every now and then .

My thoughts exactly

You people have issues ;-) I think he's doing it more for himself and his team to say, look: I am still here and I intend to keep it that way! No big deal

In fact he said that after he won the second set tiebreak. He literally mouthed those words to his team.

Nothing to see here, just some snowflakes being ruffled.

Seb Vettel is great at this. Hamilton prefers to throw his trophies in the air as an act of showmanship.

Can't wait for China.

Tennis needs arrogance, that's what drives the sport forward. Without it, you have a generation like Raonic, Nish, Dimi who never accomplish anything.

Finger wagging has to be reserved for the Federers and Nadals of the world.
It's fun, but very, very arrogant. I like Federer's arrogance, but he's Roger Federer. He's earned the right to wag his finger when some younger challenger forgets who is on the other side of the net. He earned it through years of unparalleled dominance of his profession.
It's also very context-dependent. Federer doing it at RG 2011 against Djokovic, who was already looking ahead to the final vs. Rafa, was perfect. "Don't get ahead of yourself young man."

A (at least current) journeyman like Zverev doing it in a random match is just cringey. It's "asking Bouchard to twirl" level cringey.

Sure, over here it's something you'd only do if you were telling off a child....

But maybe in Europe it's like the polite version of a fist-pump!

Or maybe not.

Loved the Zverev finger wag especially given that Kyrgios hardly one to complain in these matters.:D

That's the whole point. If you're an ATG you're that good. Fine. Finger wag all day. It's stupid/annoying to be arrogant when you don't have the credits to back yourself.

Also Federer only did it after match points and only after really big wins. I remember Madrid 2009 (over Nadal on clay), Roland Garros 2011 (stopping Djokovic’s longest winning streak) and Wimbledon 2016 (coming back against Cilic after 0-2 sets and saving multiple match points).

Would Federer do it after every few points like Zverev, it would be as annoying and laughable as the latter, but of course he doesn’t!

The finger wag as a gesture is nowhere near as grating as the fist to the heart signifying "I am courageous!" The most inappropriate user of fist to the heart....Tomic the Tank Engine!

I think it's fine. Tennis needs some more personalities instead of robots pounding the ball. Show some emotion get people to watch. Many people don't like Nick Kyrios, but how many watch him play to see if he is gonna smash a racquet? Same with McEnroe.

Zverevs finger wagging was annoying because he did it repeatedly during the match. Once at the end like Federer in 2011 vs Djokovic is ok. After every important point is too much... it's like repeating the same joke over and over.

I agree with your first sentence, but it should also be said that Federer did it more than once in that match. It was more like 5 or 6 times.

I agree with this too, but I think Djokovic and even Murray and Wawrinka have done enough to be included with Federer and Nadal in this broad category. I'll just assume it was an honest mistake.

Point being, you need to have accomplished something of significance (like at least one slam win) before you start finger wagging after every point. And preferably you should be more accomplished than your opponent. Otherwise it looks even more ridiculous IMO.

One thing I'd like to mention though is that I wonder what the general response would be if Isner had done it instead of Zverev. Think about it. Just my opinion, but I sense that even less people would be saying they liked it and a few are only doing so now because it was Zverev and he's a young kid with upside. They want the confidence/arrogance (whatever you want to call it) from him because he needs it to break through according to some people, but if Isner had done it, having already peaked and not having a higher potential ceiling I think people would've gone mad with even more negative responses than we're seeing here.

Stuff like "What is he wagging his finger about, the stupid servebot" would've been said. I probably would've said it too tbh. But I guess that loosely goes back to the context from earlier about finger wagging being reserved for people who've backed it up already.

Indeed. Finger wagging is reserved for top players who have an established name. That's the important thing.

I think you're right about Isner.

I think we should focus on his exciting talent and recognize that in the near future he will be probably be competing for world number 1 with Kyrgios. Like it or not these 2 are the future of the game. Djokovic also showed arrogant behavior on the court when he was younger until he recognized his image with fans outside of Serbia wasn't good and he has consciously worked on improving that fan interaction.
Both Zverev and Kyrgios will act more mature as they get older and start winning slams.

Finger wagging is the most arrogant celebration there is. It's like saying: "Nah ah, I'm better than you". Doesn't matter who you are it's just a lack of class and bad sportsmanship.
