I don't think I've ever seen Stanford this down. When I think of a "down" year for Stanford I think of a ranking of 7-14 and a loss in NCAA Rnd 16 or QFs.
I know the college tennis landscape has changed a lot from when Stanford was dominating, but, obviously, they're a great program/university. It's just odd to see them so far outside the college elite. I'm assuming the downturn will be short-lived.

They've been down before. Look no further than 6-7 years ago. Right before Clayton and Klahn, they lost in rd of 32 (ie: 2nd round of NCAA's).
I think Stanford has had two pretty good recruiting classes in a row. The only problems are (1) that "pretty good" does not include an elite Thacher/Klahn level of player, and (2) those two recruiting classes are all freshmen and sophomores this year and have to carry the team (five out of six singles spots).

ClarckC, I would have to agree with you on this unfortunately. The other thing that I would add that does not look good for the future is that the players seem not to be getting better once they get here. If you are not going to get elite talent you have to develop the good talent you get. Without naming names I have been seeing a pattern of players staying the same or getting worse during their 4 years here in Palo Alto. I hope the new guys next year can give the team a bigger lift because I don't see us being a top 25 team with what we have. To add to that, I am dissapointed with the schedule this year, way to soft for the tradition we have. I hope we are not dumbing down our schedule because we know we don't have the talent to compete. I think that would be a recipe for disaster.
as you say ''pretty good'' those guys can fill the #5 and #6 spots but who's at the top ?

Stanford will not make the NCAAs. They don't have the mental ability to battle with the good teams.
Bots and McMorrow of Washington beat them 8-3 a few minutes ago.
False - why didn't your son play vs Oregon? His absence proved costly...

What is up with Stanford players and injuries ? studying too much and not preparing for the match properly maybe causing more injuries than we would like.

Probably right. Let's make sure we get those priorities set properly. Tennis is so much more important than those silly classes they make athletes take.
I agree with you .. what a load of crock ... Stanford gets the pick of the litter with recruits and turns them into 'has-beens' players faster than the USTA .. Harvard is currently ranked #18 in D1 and I know some of those kids study and keep their academics up while still they are able to surpass Stanford top recruits .. how is that possible ?

Yes, but they'll be in the 33-48 seed group, and be playing a team ranked higher than UDub in the first round.
It has already been pointed out that Harvard is better than Stanford this year in men's tennis. They are twenty spots higher in the ITA rankings.

I've always liked the acronym that Virginia uses: ABC (Anybody But Carolina). Says so much about a school when they define themselves by others' misfortune. On another note please notice the amount of individual academic all americans that Stanford men's tennis produces each year (3.5 gpa for the year), and the times the team has achieved academic all american status (overall team gpa of 3.2 for the year).

We've played this game with db before (probably 2 yrs ago now) so I'm not going to rehash it for 30 posts and make everyone hate this forum again - other schools have plenty of great academic success as well from their tennis teams - but if you want to keep patting your son's team on the back we can sit back, watch, and smile at the fatherly pride
epaige is cool ... tennis is only tennis ...what do all these guys do after their 4 years after being used by their college for their tennis skills ? sometimes I really feel sorry for all theses tennis players who spent their whole life hitting a good tennis ball but not good enough to make pros ..
