Stepanek also splits with Djokovic

Goddamn has there ever been this bad a decline, in any sport? Cant think of one.
Wilander, followed by Courier. But the best correlation is Borg, who also was completely burned out and lost all interest in tennis.

I can't imagine people thinking Djoker is ever coming back to any semblance of his former glory. Clay court season and MC are almost here, and he's on vacation instead of training. Tells you everything right there.

Yeah should have clarified with my timeline. Started watching Tennis back in 2006 born in 1996. Missed a lot of these "horrible" declines then. However, was Wilander even on Peakovic's level before his decline? I mean, Djoko was on pace to AT THE LEAST catching up to Pete's slams.

Well Wilander decline began when he was young around 25 I think and he had 7 GS titles which back then was not away from the All time record. So there are some similarities with Djokovic decline

Wilander's decline was apparently because his Dad died and to an extent he felt like he'd been playing for him and lost motivation from that point forward. Of course, the cocaine probably wasn't doing him much good either

-Ian Baker Finch (golf)

I went to a practice day the year Ian Baker-Finch won The Open at Royal Birkdale and had to stifle a laugh at a completely fluffed chip he did green side at one of the holes (we were walking by on a path in an elevated position respective to the green if memory serves me correctly). He heard me and shot daggers in our direction... I like to think I spurred him on to victory that year

Interesting that he has warm words for Stepanek but makes no comment about Agassi!

Say what you like about Federer and his inability to listen to coaches, but jesus. I'm a Novak-after-Fed fan but this is sad and awkward to watch. If it's gonna be like this, retire, have a full year to realise just how much you hate your wife, divorce her and then comeback.
Yes, this is very sad indeed. I suspect they're all telling him the same thing and he doesn't want to hear it.

In an interesting interview to News Week, Srdjan Djokovic, Novak's father, has spoken about his son's rivals releasing interesting words about Roger Federer and his behavior in a match against Novak.
...

'I don’t understand why Federer is still playing tennis. Why does he still play? He’s already 34.'
...

Srdjan's goal for the rest of Novak's career is declared: becoming the best player of all time. He thinks Nole, who has 11 Grand Slam titles, will succeed to do it: 'I have been saying it since he entered tennis. Surely he will be one of the best sportsmen ever. All of this it's because he was sent from God. As a family, we tried to make God’s wish come true. He can win other 10 Grand Slams'.

I haven't been following all these twists and turns, but the Pepe involvement could be a big issue from what we're seeing from the outside. Could this be a destructive cult like environment/toxic relationship? There are a plethora of "gurus" or "spiritual masters" that end up changing the mindset of their followers. Research thought reform and brainwashing and you'll see a whole avenue of scholarship/research on the topic. It happens all too frequently.

This article is an absolute disgrace. Novak's father goes out of his way to denigrate one of the greatest players of all time because of an incident twelve years ago? Good heavens. Move on! Also, if Novak wins another 10 slams, I'll have a condo in Saudi Arabia.

Pepe has been with Novak since 2012.

This makes sense to me. He probably needs to play some more in order to get money from Lacoste, as he has been doing TV ads for them here in Florida the past few weeks.
i had suspected something like that as one reason why he slightly rushed his comeback.

but why elbow surgery? or you believe that was fake? ...and he did play well at the AO. so then why not at IW+KB ?

Something tells me that Novak may not be on the ATP tour much longer. [...] This is all very strange, as he seems to be lost at sea.
these coaching shenanigans i wouldn't take so seriously. DJ is an experienced veteran who could be a coach himself easily. there can be many reasons why he's picky with coaches and one could also interpret it as him really trying something.

for now i do believe his elbow story and that his comeback was just a little bit early because of these TV ads.
and with all that in mind, i find things are looking very good.
he's not that old yet. i do believe that he wants to come back.

Mats had some fairly significant drug issues, as well as chasing women (though no harm, he was then still a bachelor). Those became his priorities and not tennis. He was a very different personality from Djokovic. He did what Borg, Mac and Lendl never could do: win three slams in one year. After he achieved that, it was a very rapid decline.

The point of all this is: once it's broken, it's not being fixed. It isn't his elbow, Pepe, his marriage or age. He's just done mentally with the game. When that happens, it's over.

It's not sad at all. Djokovic is jumping off of waterfalls in exotic locations and living his full life. Whether he goes on to win a couple of more slams or he decides to pack it in tomorrow, there's nothing sad about Djokovic's life or his career. It's the opposite of sad.

Sad would be having an incurable fatal disease or living in abject poverty.

Djokovic and Zverev shortly will announce a mutually beneficial coaching arrangement: each will officially coach the other. They will proudly proclaim their great experience working with, and learning from, each other. After 48 hours, the reciprocal coaching relationship will abruptly end due to irreconcilable differences, including disputes about the starting date of Daylight Saving Time and the best soy sauce for bean sprouts.

Well, maybe he feels he isn't benefiting much from having a coach, so fired them.
Less shocking than when he fired Becker.
