Tennis Warehouse: Volkl Overgrip Playtest

Kinda pricey for 3 overgrips.

Yes. I had hoped to see the price lower as well, but I will say that I wrapped three racquets during the test and all still have them on. I would have swapped out at least two already if I was still using Wilson Pro Perf. The durability probably makes it worth paying the extra for them, but I do think they will have problems getting traction in the market for people that haven't tried it yet.

volkl super grip ii is similar to others, so maybe the bulk rolls will be as well. The wilson pro 3-pack has a "normal" price of $8 on TW. Here are the currently listed prices:

Just looking at the pricing, if the Volkl Super Grip II lasts longer than Wilson Pro or Yonex Super Grap, I'd just go with a 12-pack and make it last as long as a 30-pack of the other grips.

way longer lasting than the Yonex Super Grap. the tacky surface of Super Grap shredded on me during the first hit.

Which color overgrip did you receive?
Black
Do you typically use an overgrip? Yes
If yes, which one do you use? Babolat VS Original, Tournagrip XL
Was the test grip easy to apply (any wrinkles during install, did the grip lay down nicely?) Very easy to apply, however I did get some small wrinkles at the butt cap. Probably could have pulled them out but I did not want to stretch the overgrip and make it thinner.
Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?) Yes. I had extra left to trim off.
Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much) Level of tackiness was good, not too sticky or too slick, plus the level of tackiness remained consistent through the 6 - 8 hour test period.
Longevity of Tackiness Very good, consistent through test duration.
Level of sweat absorption I did not sense much, if any sweat absorption during my test, however I am playing indoors in a cool environment. So, not the extreme sweaty environment of typical outdoor, summer play.
Would you consider using this overgrip? Yes. One small issue I had with the overgrip was the area of non perforated area on the grip itself to allow for Volkl labeling. I thought this area was too large, creating an space without perforation (smooth area) in the middle of the handle. I prefer to have the perforations consistent over the entire length of the handle. A friend borrowed the racquet and said it made it feel like the handle had an hourglass shape, with the non perforated area feeling like a smaller diameter.
What color would you prefer for this overgrip? White
List any additional thoughts on the overall performance.
This grip has a lot of cushion, making it ideal for me since I typically use two overgrips over a bare handle, without a base grip. I thought the performance overall was very good. The aesthetics were very complimentary to the 6.1 PSC matte black finish racquet I used for the test.

Thanks to TW and to Volkl for the opportunity to Playtest this product!

Do you typically use an overgrip?
Always

If yes, which one do you use?
Tournagrip year round over a leather grip.

Was the test grip easy to apply (any wrinkles during install, did the grip lay down nicely?)
Very easy, no wrinkling at all.

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?)
The grip was considerably longer than most overgrips I've used. I had a few inches to spare when applying but I don't overlap very much when applying and pull it pretty tight so the bevels can still be felt well.

Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?)
There was a considerable amount of tackiness upon application.

Longevity of Tackiness

My hands tend to sweat while I play regardless of weather. This time of the year they sweat less as it is in the 40's and below even though I play indoors. It seems to me that the tackiness wore off after a few hours of playing, just because sweat absorption wasn't real high.

Level of sweat absorption
These grips are surely not that bad in this department, but they aren't great either. If you have sweaty hands, although these are perforated, they probably won't do the trick. They tend to become a bit slippery, and I can only imagine it being a bit worse in the humid summer months.

Would you consider using this overgrip?
Only in the colder months, during any other time of year I need a grip with a higher level of sweat absorption.

What color would you prefer for this overgrip?
No preference

List any additional thoughts on the overall performance
They felt nice, and as others mentioned, felt a bit rubbery. Again, for the winter months, these seem durable and can be used for a while. They also have a good thickness. I don't think I will make the change but for people looking for a good perforated grip, this may be it.

Thanks to Volkl and Tennis Warehouse for the opportunity to try out these grips.

Which color overgrip did you receive? Orange

Do you typically use an overgrip? Yes

If yes, which one do you use? Tournagrip original or Volkl V-Dry

Was the test grip easy to apply (any wrinkles during install, did the grip lay down nicely?) Grip was very easy to apply, it was soft and pliable which allowed me to wrap it without any wrinkles

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?) Yes, plenty long enough for my two handed backhand

Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?) It's among the tackier overgips that I've tried, reminds me of Yonex Supergrap but perforated

Longevity of Tackiness: the tackiness only lasted about 4 hours for me,I am a heavy sweater and these did not hold up that well

Level of sweat absorption: Absorption was ok, my hands get very sweaty so pretty much the only overgrips that work for me are the super dry ones

Would you consider using this overgrip? Maybe in the colder months when my hands aren't as sweaty, they offer good tack if my hands aren't wet

What color would you prefer for this overgrip? I would've preferred white, the bright orange looked out of place on my Pure Aeros

List any additional thoughts on the overall performance: Overall, I thought they played well for a tacky overgrip, they didn't work too well for my sweaty hands but nothing really does

Thanks again T-Dub for the opportunity to be involved in this playtest. You guys rock!

Pro's Pro Tacky

Was the test grip easy to apply (any wrinkles during install, did the grip lay down nicely?)
It did wrinkle at the bottom of the grip as I began installing it. It tended to wrinkle along the perforation in the middle of the grip. Not a big issue, just had to be careful when starting to apply the grip.

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?)
It was plenty long enough as I cut a few inches off after fully wrapping my grip (4 3/8 on a Aero Pro)

Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?)
I liked the tackiness of this grip. Good grip and good tack. Better than the Pro's Pro grip I have been using

Longevity of Tackiness
I've played about 6-7 hours of hard hitting with the grip and the tack is still good.

Level of sweat absorption
This is a weakness of the grip, I think due to the thinness of it. It absorbs well, but it is just too thin to absorb a lot of sweat. On a hot day (in Hawaii) with humidity, the grip did start to slip a bit.

Would you consider using this overgrip?
If they made it thicker and without the perforation, I would definitely consider it. But not as it is. Too thin.

What color would you prefer for this overgrip?
I like the black. White would also be good.

List any additional thoughts on the overall performance
I used this over a leather grip so the thinness was good in that it left the firm feel of the leather grip while still providing some nice tack. However, I would prefer a thicker grip with the same tack to provide more sweat absorption. Overall a good grip if you want a thin, tacky grip. Thanks TW and Volkl for the chance to playtest this grip!

Which color overgrip did you receive? I got the white grips
Do you typically use an overripe? Yes, always
If yes, which one do you use? I have been using Yonex Supergrap in white for the past 3 years
Was the test grip easy to apply (any wrinkles during install, did the grip lay down nicely?) This is the "first impression" of the grip. I noticed that it was tighter than my yonex, but not as thick as some klipper grips I have used in emergencies. The grip needed to be pulled a decent amount to be put on nicely.
Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?) This aspect is very important for me because I never cut my grips when I reach the top. I always wrap it to just below the throat because it gives me a place to dry my hands while I'm playing (I also think that it looks cool). This grip was plenty long enough for that.
Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?) This is an interesting topic for me. As soon as I put the grip on, I noticed that it was very tacky, just as much as my yonex. After my warm up, I had adjusted to the grip, but during my match, for some reason it started to slip (it was 60 degrees out). I played through it and the next time I played with it, it was perfect during my match. No slipping at all. Perhaps it was a coating or something? Whatever it is, the grip worked the second time around, which is all that matters.
Longevity of Tackiness: I often keep my grips on for a very long time, and then I turn it inside out to use the other side. On the side you're supposed to use, the tackiness stayed, fading slowly, and more importantly, getting softer over time. On the reverse side, the same thing occurred, only with less tack.
Level of sweat absorption: I do not really sweat that much in general unless it it above 90 out, so I cannot really comment on this aspect of the grip because the hottest temperature I played in was 60. My concern would be the perforations for those who sweat a lot. Wouldn't sweat get caught in the holes?
Would you consider using this overgrip? As a whole, this grip is very good. I would use it only if it were cheaper than the yonex grips I currently use.
What color would you prefer for this overripe? Grips should be white!
List any additional thoughts on the overall performance: One thing I noticed was that the grip was not particularly cushioned compared to other grips that I have used. This may be a plus for those looking for a thinner feel.

Thanks to TW and Volkl for this amazing playtest!

Which color over grip did you receive?
Red

Do you typically use an overgrip?
Yes

If yes, which one do you use?
Yonex Super Grap

Was the test grip easy to apply (any wrinkles during install, did the grip lay down nicely?)
Yes easy to install, no issues.

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?)
Yes the length was fine.

Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?)
It is a tacky grip. I like a tacky grip and had no issues with slipping.

Longevity of Tackiness
Longevity seemed fine, but due to weather/schedule I only had limited time to play.

Level of sweat absorption
My hands don't sweat a lot this time of year, so hard to comment on sweat absorption.

Would you consider using this overgrip?
I'm not a fan of the perforations, but if priced right I would consider.

What color would you prefer for this overgrip?
I prefer white.

List any additional thoughts on the overall performance
Other than the perforations, I liked this over grip and was satisfied with it's performance.

Which color overgrip did you receive?
Orange

Do you typically use an overgrip?
Yes. All the time.

If yes, which one do you use?
Dunlop U-Sweat and, on accession, Tourna Grip Original over a leather grip.

Was the test grip easy to apply (any wrinkles during install, did the grip lay down nicely?)
Very standard install. Went on smoothly – no issues with wrinkles.

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?)
Good length. I was able to wrap all the way with a little over 1/4” overlap on my Babolat grip.

Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?)
The grip had a nice level of tack during warm up. Got a little slippery as my match went on and hands started to sweat.

Longevity of Tackiness
It seemed pretty tacky for the first two uses (again, only up until my hands started to sweat then the tack is nullified). After a few sets the tacky feeling started to go downhill pretty quick.

Level of sweat absorption
I am a heavy sweater, playing here in Central Texas. I could use a grip like this in the winter when it’s a little dryer and cooler but I couldn’t use this grip during the other 9 months out of the year. I’ve played with every grip under the sun and haven’t found one that does a better job at sweat absorption than the Dunlop U-Sweat (also in terms of durability).

Would you consider using this overgrip?
Probably not. Not a fan of the perforated look and the performance was lacking.

What color would you prefer for this overgrip?
I try to use white or black. Not a fan of the Tourna blue but it’s a decent grip so I use it.

List any additional thoughts on the overall performance
A decent grip for anyone who doesn’t have sweaty hands. Seemed very similar to the Wilson Pro Grip so if you like those (as many of my playing partners do) then you’d like these grips too.

Thanks for the playtest opportunity!

Which color overgrip did you receive:
Black

Do you usually use an overripe?
No. I usually replace my grip with an original grip. I generally prefer as little between me and the handle for better feel.

If yes, which one do you use:
A long time ago I use to use Yonex Wave Grap. But went away from it and original grips now. More expensive but am very happy that way.

Was the test grip easy to apply (any wrinkles during install, did the grip lay down nicely?)
The Volkl overgrip was very easy to apply. There were no wrinkles and layed down very nicely. So ease and quick to use. I am seeing overgrips in a new light now.

Was it sized appropriately (e.g., was it long enough?)
I thought the size was perfect. It exstended all the way up the handle with about an extra inch left over that you could trim or leave depending on your preferences.

Level of tackiness (did your hand stick/slip too much?)
For me the level was just right. Enough tack that your hand doesn't slip but still allows for easy hand adjustments. I live in the northeast where in the warm months my hands sweat a lot. As it is cool and have been playing indoors also I haven't sweat that much so it was never an issue for me. I usally play with a Volkl replacement grip and don't have too much problems with slippage. I feel the overgrip will be the same way

Longevity of Tackiness:
I played many hours with a grip before I even felt the need to replace. Once again it isn't hot and humid right now where I live. But I was easily getting about 15 hours before I thought of maybe changing the overgrip.

Level of sweat absorption:
Once again it wasn't all that humid this time of the year. In the summer I do sweat a lot. Still I think the Volkl would do a great job. It seemed to absore all the sweat I did manage to produce.

Would you consider using this overgrip?
Yes, I will continue to use this overgrip. After playing with it I realized I wasn't loosing feel off the ball. So in the long run this will be cheaper for me than replacing the grip. Much fast to put on also.

What color would you prefer for this overgrip?
I have always used black and was lucky enough to recieve it in that color. Do I mind other colors? Certainly not. I have seen some players with some weird colors. To each their own. Maybe I should branch out and try some myself. Maybe I can distract my opponent hehehe.

List any additional thoughts on the overall performance:
As a person who plays with a perforated grip I would like to say that I loved the perforations in the overgrip. Also I perfer the slimness of the overgrip. This allowed me to add to my grip without changing the size that much. Very important for someone who usually doesn't play with an overgrip. All in all I really liked it.

Thanks to Volkl and TW for this chance.

this overgrip is VERY durable. i tape 2 fingertips and the tape usually just tears through OGs. the supergrap surface tore up in the first session. after 3 sessions, this volkl OG is barely showing signs of wear.

Durable for sure. Similar looking Kimony grip only lasted two sessions, some grips only last a day of playing, some last less, but the problem with grip is it doesn't soak up sweat enough for the people with sweaty hands. It really is durable but too slippery when it's wet.

played yesterday afternoon. it was cool and very dry out. for the first time ever, i was having trouble getting a secure grip on my stick wrapped with volkl v-dry because my hand was just not building up enough heat to make it grippy. my racquet wrapped with Volkl Super Grip II on the other hand was just perfect. there was no sweat build up on my hand so the tacky surface was right for the occasion. and after 2+ hours of hitting, it was still close to new condition. the only area of wear is on the bulges of the buttcap. durability is really impressive.

I am going to be ordering a few packs of these from TW. I keep finding myself wishing I had more of them! I still have a few sticks with them on, and they are still grippy!!! I have a new stick I am playing with, and it needs The Perf ;)
