The Dominic Thieminator Thread

He'll play the full cycle of MS1000's with one less match as a top 8 seed. Also, add in his home Vienna 500 and probably Basel too.
We don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves:p It would be fantastic if he did though. That would be a big nail in the haters coffin, winning tournaments on all the surfaces in the same year.

I'm really stunned that he managed to win a title on grass. I've always thought this as his weakest surface and he hasn't done well on transitions the last years. He didn't quite achieve anything on grass last year, so I wasn't expecting a lot, but some training matches in Stuttgart and Halle. However, he once more proved me wrong by beating a - rusty, but healthy looking - Federer and Kohlschreiber, who had become quite a nemesis in the last meetings. Awesome!

I just hope he doesn't overplay. Even though he said he prefers playing matches over training sessions, I think it could be mentally draining. Despite the title I don't expect too much of him in Wimbledon. There are many dangerous opponents around that he could face early when the courts are still fast.

If Dominick is so good, why did he get blown out in the Semis of French open to Novak ????????????

Who says he's good. He's just a lowly World No.7 who has barely won a measly 7 titles and a laughable 4 this year, he-he. And that at the ripe old age of 22. Pathetic.

Experts, like our own venerable Tennis Commentator, have declared stalwarts like Kyrgios, Zverev, Coric, Doric and Modric, not to mention the Kokk, to be much better so who are we to argue.

Ah, and, Novak made World No. 2 Andy Murray look even worse in the final so Andy is at least one guy who's worse than Thiem. Whew...

Birdman lost his 1R match, right? So DT's hold on his ranking for Wimby became stronger?

With luck Berdy will be feeling the DT's in R16 Wimbledon as the lower seed. I believe it is a lock. The 2016 website says this is the formula:
Gentlemen's Seeding Formula
  • Revised seeding arrangements for men introduced in 2001 when seedings committee disbanded
  • Formula amended in 2002 for men as follows:
  • Take ESP points at 16 June 2014
  • Add 100% points earned for all grass court tournament in past 12 months
  • Add 75% points earned for best grass court tournament in 12 months before that.
Clearly there webmaster is incompetent. My "ass"umption from this description is that Stuttgart adds 250 points onto Thiem's current ranking lead over Berd Brain. With the Berdditching, its impossible for Thiem to be caught even with Berdy getting some extra points from his meager grass showings last year and back to 2014 Wimbledon. Somebody ought to have a live spreadsheet on the seedings, but haven't seen one. Of course ESP points are not defined anywhere on the internet; more Wimbledon incompetence.

Well done to Thiem. Wouldn't have picked him to be able to make the transaction to Grass so swiftly. Living up to his new ranking. Hope he goes deep in Wimbledon.

Thanks, seems the case is as you say which will be great. I wonder if there's a way for a player to call Wimby's organizers and get an update on where he is at the moment.

Dominator scheduled to play Joao Sousa tonight; is that the same JS he beat on clay earlier? Should be a good start but let's not get cocky as C. Ronaldo learned to his detriment just recently

Must be a while since someone besides Shokavish has beaten Fred twice in a row.

Has Djokovic beaten Fed in two tournaments in a row in which both played recently? I believe you have to go back to Rome/RG in '12 for that to have happened.

Djokovic also did a threepeat in '11 at AO/Dubai/IW and Tsonga had the Wimby/RogersCanada combo.

Thiem must have the 8th seed.;) Heres the scoop. The real threat is Cilic at this moment. Its a 218 seedings point gap, but points are basically doubled at this point for Cilic. Thiem has a full load of ATP 250/500 points as the title holder in six of these events. Thiem doesn't start to double really until he wins Halle; basically 50 of the 300 points for final is doubled. If Thiem makes Halle final (likely) and Cilic somehow beats Murray to make the other final. Vis a vis this seeding point gap from @jm1980 's excellent spreadsheet (link below), Thiem picks up 305 more seeding points and Cilic picks up 465, but still narrowly behind Thiem. Cilic just making SF and Thiem losing QF is close too. Cilic nets 270 for the SF and Thiem only gains 45 points by making QF and Cilic nudges ahead by a scant 7 points. At this point Thiem has to match Cilic round to round and he's in, unless Steve Johnson's the man.

Here are the scenarios for Thiem:

R16 loss: Goffin and Cilic both need to reach the final to pass him (#8-#10 seed)
QF/SF loss: Goffin now needs to win to surpass him; Cilic still only needs a final (#8-#10 seed)
F loss: Both Cilic and Goffin need to win (Goffin is in Halle anyway); Thiem will pass Gasquet; and also Raonic if he loses his next match (#6-#9 seed)
W: Guaranteed to be ahead of Cilic and Goffin. Will be ahead of Raonic unless Milos wins Queen's (#6-#7 seed)

Cilic will probably have to get through Murray to get to the final, and Goffin plays his idol Federer next. I think Thiem is in pretty good shape.

We really need a permanent thread for Wimbledon seedings. Even in the off grass season it would be cool to have this resource available. I know this year there was a lot of hope that Fed could snatch the #2 seed from Murray during clay season. During clay season yours truly wanted Thiem in with an 8 seed. This site is a live rankings source, but they don't show formulas:
http://www.****************.com/2-general-messages/236585-live-atp-rankings-thread.html

The gain, eff, and drop are quite confusing sometimes (don't "add" up) when you have a player like Thiem with a boat load of ATP250/500 points (only 6 best results count.)

MTF is censored here, but you can get to Slasher's live rankings using:

http://bit.ly/LiveRanks

Gain are the points a player gains this week
Drop are the points a player will drop this week
Eff is the effective weekly point change (which may be different from Gain-Drop depending on their other results)

Didn't watch it but only 3 points lost in the 2nd set? Haha.
Gabs won 8 points total in the set. 4 in the game he held. Thiem was impenetrable. Gabs got mentally ground down and had no way to win points. Great, great stuff from Thiem.

Thiem might just win Wimbledon. He looks that good right now. Amazing to even thinks this 11 days after the French Open. Thiem was 2-6 before. With this match I think it can be said that Thiem loves grass. Thiem did not expect this and was 2-6 career on grass just 11 days ago. Its amazing to watch the entire Thiem bag of tricks in play. One of his drop shots today looked like it glued itself to the grass, lol. The power and grace is staggering. Thiem slides like a professional dancer on grass in perfect balance at all times. The young Amadeus of grass.

I caught the last few games of the 1st set today and Dominic looked really good. :) His movement was impressive for someone who's played so few matches on the surface in his career, his serve looked very solid and his touch at the net was delightful. Is it asking too much for a 2nd grass court title this weekend?

I've been a Thiem fan for 2 years now, ever since his 2014 match in the fourth round of the USO against Berdych and this success is pretty unbelievable. I'm really elated with the progress Domi has made over the past 3 months. He's adapted to different surfaces, fixed holes in his game accordingly and has started to rise to the occasion on big points.
