Well, remembering Christian Ruud from the nineties ... nice to see the Ruud name resurface in pro tennis.
saw him on tv yesterday. Not a bad game. Hope he keeps it up. I have always liked the red, white and navy blue Norwegian flag. It's kind of a big plus.

Agree! Tennis coverage in Norway is only about Rafa Roger and slam winners. Tennis is not a big sport in ski-land Norway. Sweden been a tennis nation, not Norway. Casper is the only one from Norway playing international as far as I know. He trains in spain, hopefully he is not that "alone" there!

All the scandinavian countries got similar pattern flags, but different variations in color. Vikings!!! My totally biased opinion is that Norway and Iceland got the nicest flags

Håndball er morro. Skiskyting er skikkelig gøy, det er alpint og! Men det er tennis jeg liker best. Tennis teknikk og spilletype er så ulikt fra spiller til spiller. De må finne sin egen vei som passer til deres ferdigheter slik at de kan slå motstandere. Elsker individualismen i tennis. Ingen annen sport jeg vet om som er slik. Alle skiløpere har mer eller mindre samme teknikk, noen synlige ulikheter, men det er ikke mye.Utrolig moro når vi hevder oss i noe annet enn - sukk - langrenn

Let's stick with English mainly guys so that us Norwegians does not take over the thread entirely But I agree, tennis is unique compared to most sports due to its individualistic character. That and boxing I guess but I hate violent sports so..

hahahaha. Actually my dad is Italian and I have been in Italy a lot. I have had my fair share of getting annoying attention because of the blond thing, in my youth I didn't like it at all. Problem in south Europe is that they often are short compared to me, but it doesn't seem to bother them too much, bothers me thoughI like how you elegantly and somewhat subtle relayed that you're a tall blonde, well played

Yeah, Egypt is a nightmare when it comes to this. So much nasty men around there, didn't feel safe. Ive been to Dahab several times because I do scuba diving, and Egypt not a long flight from Europe.I once travelled to Egypt with a tall blonde gf, that was exhausting..... was offered a lot of camels for her, no joke.

Monday brought the Norwegian 18-year-old’s first victory on the world tour, and Norway’s first win at that level since Jan Frode Andersen achieved the feat in 2004. Thursday saw yet another victory, and Ruud is thus the first Norwegian in a quarter-final on the world tour since his father, Christian Ruud, in 2001.
A strong opponent
Ruud impressed once again. On Monday, the Norwegian beat the world number 88, Rogerio Dutra Silva, and only once before had Norway’s top-ranked player defeated a higher-ranked player. That happened in the Challenger tournament in Seville, where Inigo Cervantes, then number 75 in the world, was beaten in a tournament that Ruud won.
At the start of the tournament Thursday’s opponent, Roberto Carbelles Baena, was one of the easier players Ruud could have met. The Spaniard had had to make his way through qualifying to reach the main draw, but was very impressive while beating world number 39 Joao Sousa in the first round.
The Spanish 23-year-old is ranked 132 in the world. That is his highest ranking since last August, when he was ranked 95th. Last year the clay court specialist did not win any Challenger tournaments, but reached the first round of the biggest clay court tournament in the world, Roland Garros, after playing very well in qualifying. Carbelles Baena had also reached the quarter-finals of the ATP tournament in Quito two weeks ago.
An exciting match
The first set, which lasted 66 minutes, was very evenly-balanced. At 2-1 Ruud had his first break points, but missed both chances. At 2-2 he found himself 0-40 behind, but saved all three break points. At deuce the Norwegian also had to save another break point before he served out the game. In Ruud’s next service game Carbelles Baena also had a break point, but Ruud saved that one too.
For the rest of the set both players held serve without facing any break points, and a tiebreak was reached. Ruud won the first point, but then got into difficulty and found himself 2-6 behind. The youngster saved two set points, but then his Spanish opponent won the tiebreak, 7-4.
Ruud had very good start to the second set. At 1-1, the lad from Snarøya had three break points and got his first break on the second one. The Norwegian champion was in complete control for the rest of the set, which he won 6-4 despite missing a break and set point at 5-3.
Ruud had a nightmarish start to the third set. Carbelles Baena broke at the first opportunity, but at 1-3 the Norwegian had two break points, both of which he missed. However, the youngster soon put the bad start to the third set behind him and had another break point at 2-4, deuce. This time he took his chance and broke. The shooting star then held serve to even the score at 4-4.
There were no further breaks in the set, so the match had to be decided in a tiebreak. This time it was Carbelles Baena who won the first point, while Ruud was only able to win one of his service points and fell behind. The youngster then displayed great mental strength by taking the Spaniard’s next two service points with some excellent play. Ruud followed this up by playing well his on his own serve in the next two points as a result of which he had the match in his hands. The Norwegian took his chance and won the match by 7-3 in the tiebreak.
A great opportunity
Ruud thus continues to make good progress. The youngster probably felt that he should have won the first set. In that set the Norwegian tennis player had several opportunities, but was a bit too hasty and made unforced errors. In the second set he raised his game to a higher level, while in the third set, after a bad start, he was able to recover and finally secure victory.
In the quarter-final Ruud will play the winner of the match between the Brazilians Thomaz Bellucci and Thiago Monteiro. Both are unseeded, and ranked nos. 76 and 85 respectively. Belluci was impressive when knocking out the world number five, Kei Nishikori, in the first round. Ruud therefore has a great chance to reach the semi-final.

Before Hushovd Norwegians almost didn't know what Tour de France was. Then cycling-fever runs through the country; hours of tv coverage every day, people taking their holiday in france to watch etc. Sort of same thing with Carlsen and chess. I met a few Norwegian fellow travelers in Switzerland one summer and they laughed at all my yokes!Well I didnt mean that Norwegians are particulary funny people literally (which I think was pretty clear). But its funny that the whole country goes crazy because of one person. Before Hushovd Norwegians almost didn't know what Tour de France was.
