In this week's Sao Paulo tournament Casper Ruud will play the 24-year-old Brazilian wildcard Thiago Monteiro in first-round action. The winner of that encounter will face the top seed, Joao Sousa, whom Ruud beat in Rio last week.

Monteiro will be a rematch of the Rio’17 QFs won 2&6 by Casper.

He has two Challenger finals and a 2R ATP250 Munich points to defend...about 100 points. All of those fall off after the cutoff date for RG so he should be safe unless players directly below him jump from IW/Miami results. Top 90 would insure DE.

Will Ruud play the iw qualification?

The screen score board is placed so it hides the baseline, and a lot of the time the player is hidden behind it too. Intriguing.

Well, a second main tour semi-final is secured, and so is an ascertained place in the top 100 in next week's ranking.

In the end it was an absolutely dominant performance, with Dellien simply not handling the pressure of the Ruud forehand.

In the semi-final awaits Christian Garin, who ousted Leo Mayer in three sets. Not a gimme, but Ruud should definitely see it as as good a chance as any of making a first main tour final.

Several career firsts for Casper Ruud this week:

His first time inside the Top 100

The first Norwegian inside the ATP Top 100 since his father, Christian

Casper's first time to defeat the no. 1 seed in an ATP tournament (João Sousa)

First time Casper has reached at least the quarter-finals of the singles event at two consecutive ATP tournaments
-

A final this week in São Paulo would be another first for Casper at ATP level.

Terrible start for the young Norwegian, after being so convincing on serve all week, he breaks himself in the second service game.
I have never seen him play so nervously... Hope he can find his range

One loose service game last set, and failed to convert a break point in two unique games, and that decided a tight set.

Now he opens the second set with a loose service game from 40-15 up as well sadly. Will be imperative that he now seizes the few chances he will get to get back in this.

eta: panic temporarily averted -- breaks right bacc.

eta2: panic back on, rebroken once more after annoying forehand UEs on points he controlled.

Casper Ruud has been seeded no. 7 for qualifying for the main Indian Wells tournament due to get underway later this week. He faces the 30-year-old Japanese player Tatsuma Ito in first-round action. The winner of that match will face either the American Juan Cruz Aragone or the no. 20 seed, Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland, for a place in the main singles draw.

An interesting match-up later on today (Wednesday) in second-round action at the inaugural Challenger in Phoenix where the Norwegian no. 1 and no. 15 seed, Casper Ruud, takes on the Swedish no. 1 Elias Ymer. This will be a first meeting between Scandinavia's top two male players.

Woz might beat Casper, as bad as he is tonight, 1-6.

Although Casper Ruud was beaten in first-round action in Miami earlier today, he is set to move up to a new career high of around no. 90 the next time updated world rankings are issued. After an unspectacular three-set match Félix Auger Aliassime emerged the victor in Miami by the score of 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

NCH #93 with only Rublev, Krajinovic and Ferrer still alive in Miami within reach to jump him. All face seeds (if fedr wins vs Albot today he is Krajinovic’s next opponent) so he should be favored to enter the clay season at that ranking.
