Last significant HC competition for a while (125 points for the winner)...I’m wondering how many of the top seeds are making the much shorter commute to Houston on clay next week rather than the transatlantic schlep to Marrakech and beyond. Top seed Sandgren will try to defend finals points there. Ruud, Lorenzi and Granollers would be natural fits as would #3 López if he’s not too distracted by his new role as TD at MutuaMadrid M1K in early May.
Looks like CR is eager for clay, lost against this dude ranked 3xx.... did they give him an appearance fee or something??

Emilio played college tennis at USC instead of following his dad’s path straight into the pro circuit. I think he made a wise choice. His career high is #215 some five years ago, soon after he graduated.

A workmanlike performance from Casper Ruud yesterday in Houston where, in first-round action, he beat Bolivia's Hugo Dellien 7-6(7), 6-4. The very close first set was notable for a purple patch from Ruud who came back from 2-4 down to 4-4 and 40-0 on his own serve, winning eleven out of twelve points in the process. The Norwegian's first serve was an important factor in his victory and helped him save the only set point he faced when behind by 5 points to 6 in the tiebreak.
The second set was less competitive than the first because, from 2-2 onwards, Dellien was always struggling. When leading 5-3, Ruud had two match points at 15-40 on Dellien's serve but the Bolivian managed to save both of these, the second with the help of a netcord. Ruud then served out for victory in the next game, albeit not without a struggle of his own.

Interested to see the outcome of Ruud v. Opelka.
Match-up-wise it's hell for caspr, but this being on clay therefore makes it an interesting proposition. The type of match that would be decisive to win, both to build confidence and get the ranking into higher territory.

On clay he should win, but I somehow doubt he will considering Opelka is pretty confident these days.. if CR protects his own serve well, anything can happen. Opelka in 3, 2 of them breakers.

Hate to dispel the clay court superiority of Ruud myth...Opelka was 12-5 on the dirt in ‘18, including a Bordeaux Challenger title. Wins over Gulbis and Kec were part of his dirt CV last year.

This week’s Houston tournament is a good opportunity for Casper Ruud to gain points at ATP level without having to play a Top 20 player as early as the first or second round, and thus to continue his move up the singles rankings and gain direct entry into similar and bigger tournaments.

Agreed, let me re-phrase (I was not aware of Opelka’s dirt results though, fair point). If CR is to meet his top 40 objective in (yes he said that’s his 2019 goal) 2019, he will have to beat in front of him in a 250 on clay, especially if the guy is ranked outside top 50.

Granollers has struggled to get past r1 lately but took out 5th seeded Fritz here, and then the Tank Engine of course, not sure if we can ever read anything into the latter.
