Looks like City fans' lighters found their target more often than the players did today.

F you, Taylor. Nice try. GGMU

Now time to lose to Everton at Old Trafford, no?

lol Probably. If big Dunc is still leading Everton then I'll be concerned.

Somebody launching a lighter at Fred? I was wondering what happened. Thought for a moment it was racism.

Hi boss. Hope you enjoyed us coloring the city in red. Even though it handed Liverpool another boost in the race.

I saw a few lighters and a bottle around the corner flag before he got hit so I figured it's that.

Shouldn't have allowed a tense finish. But a great week nonetheless. Low key hoping the guys can go far in Europa again.

United gave City the title last year basically by taking away pts from Liverpool, only right they cost them the title this time.

Any chance of something different finally happening in Bundesliga and Serie A?

Bayern lost to league leaders Monchengladbach and are now seven points behind in 7th place.

Juventus lost for the first time this season, Lazio came back to win 3-1. Inter lead Juve by two points, with Lazio behind by three, trying to get in the mix.

Bayern and Juve are on a run of seven and eight consecutive league titles respectively. Could at least one of these two streaks end now please....

A new Scottish title winner is what I'm interested in. 8 in a row for Celtic. Stevie G to lead Rangers. The gap at the top is 2 points. They play tomorrow in the league cup final if anybody is interested.

Title winning form from United this season against the big guns. Consistency is the word of the day.

That was a fun game last night. A third 5-2 scoreline at Camp Nou this season already, this time against Mallorca. Can't resist conceding apparently, but finding the back of the net hasn't been an issue. In fact the team will be the deadliest goalscoring machine at home in La Liga history if they manage to keep up this pace until the end of the season. Camp Nou was treated to 30 goals in the first 7 games.

First half was beautiful to watch. A performance that reminded of the best days. Good pressure, rushing the opponent into many mistakes, and everyone was combining well. De Jong proving again he was a good midfield investment. Griezmann doing better. Roberto with several good runs. Rakitic using the recent starting opportunities. This time it was imaginable them playing this good even without Leo. Unfortunately games like that don't happen very often, and when they do, they are against a side that will be battling to survive relegation. But I guess this is an improvement considering we were lucky to beat rock bottom Leganes a couple of weeks ago. :sneaky:

Speaking of Leo, he presented his record breaking 6th Ballon d'Or in front of us. And guess what else he did last night? He broke another record. A 35th La Liga hat trick. Showing off the golden ball before the game, picking up the match ball after the game. Simply too good again.

All of his goals were beautiful, and so were the other two, from his two attacking partners. MSG have struck again. Griezmann connected with Ter Stegen's goal kick delivery, found himself one on one with Manolo Reina and chipped him for the early opening goal. This was Ter Stegen's second assist of the season, having found Suarez earlier this season against Getafe in Madrid. Griezmann ended up assisting Messi for the second goal when the captain sent an unstoppable rocket in a blink of an eye outside the penalty area. After unlucky moment when Lenglet's tackle made Budimir's shot lob Ter Stegen for Mallorca's first goal, Leo sent a nice curled shot outside the box to restore the two goal advantage. The cherry on top though was the fourth goal right before halftime. Some beautiful one touch passing finished off by one of the cheekiest backheels from Suarez. One of his finest goals ever, which says a lot considering how many beauties Luis has scored over the years.

Second half was a few steps below the first. Although I could understand that partially with the result mostly safe. Ter Stegen made a poor judgement that allowed Budimir to score easily from Kubo's cross, but a few minutes before the end of the game, a good move resulted in Suarez serving the ball to Leo who sent it into the near corner, in off the crossbar for a historic hat trick. Barca could have had way more than five in the end, but Manolo Reina had a good evening, denying Griezmann, Suarez, Perez and Roberto good chances.

Sadly the highlights from La Liga official channel these days leave out a lot of good moments. Soon I expect them to leave out some goals as well if the teams end up scoring "too many". :cautious: But at least the full matches might be uploaded a year from when they were played.

It would be great to end the first half of the season on a high. Travelling to Milano to play Inter in a Champions League match that has no effect on Barcelona who sealed first place, but after that there are two difficult La Liga games. Travelling to La Anoeta, our most challenging ground in modern history to face Real Sociedad, then just a few days later hosting Real Madrid in a postponed El Clasico. We are currently level on points as that big date approaches (and while we have to face Sociedad away, Madrid will play Valencia at Mestalla), which will make that upcoming game one of those with highest stakes in recent La Liga memory. And I hope we keep the recent domestic edge.

Unfortunately Pep won't be achieving a title threepeat in a third league as well. But it's really nice to hear Manchester United hold on for a win. I only saw the first half and they could have easily had more than two goals. It put a smile on my face seeing such a young squad assembled in a derby. No outfield player who started the game was even close to 30 I think.

Honestly they remind me of Liverpool during some of their struggles. You know they won't be the best at the end of the season, you know they will have several bad performances that are harder to explain, but you also know they can beat the best on their day, they show up against the toughest teams more often than not actually. But it doesn't surprise me much. A lot of pace but not so much creativity so it's no wonder they struggle to break weaker, defensive teams down. I hope they manage to find the missing pieces in the near future. Because having Manchester United at the top of England is way more fun than having Liverpool there. I have seen both, so I know what I am talking about. :p

14/18 points against the 6 top dogs this season. Beat Chelsea, Spurs, City, Leicester and draws with Liverpool and Arsenal . hmmm maybe it is just five teams. OK, I'll include Arsenal because of history. But yeah, we had Roy Keane in the studio glowing. I don't want to make prediction because I was writing off top 4 not so long ago. Very young team. He kept going on about consistency because other times he has been in the studio this season against the ''weaker'' teams and they haven't performed.

Last weekend was a very special one for Joaquin, an amazing winger who was an important part of the best sides in history of every La Liga club he played for, while also registering just over 50 caps for Spain in the mid 2000s.

Coming through Real Betis' academy, he won Copa del Rey with them in 2005, and then the same in 2008 with Valencia that also had the likes of Fernando Morientes, David Villa, David Silva, Juan Mata, Vicente Rodriguez and Raul Albiol. He wasn't any less important for a Malaga side who finished fourth in La Liga and was on the brink of a Champions League semifinal in 2013 when they were denied by a couple of injury time goals from Klopp's Dortmund.

Since 2015, he's been playing for the club where he started his career, still doing well even at this age, while Betis have two great seasons behind them as they enjoyed some European football. And on Sunday, in a 3-2 victory over Athletic Bilbao, Joaquin scored three goals in only 18 minutes. This placed him in the record books as he is the oldest player in La Liga to score a hat trick, doing it at 38 years of age.

What makes it even more special, it's the very first hat trick of his career.

Felicidades, Joaquin! (y)

there goes the fun

brilliant little break from Mané, but goalie Stankovic way too eager.

And he does it again, WTF, 0–2.

Loses his head a bit there, does the goalkeeper. Mad precision from Salah to find that angle, no doubt.

Waiting for some other CL contender to waste a 5-0 lead against them in some knockout round. BOY, FOOTBALL IS FUN LATELY.

Yeah, looks like Liverpool have it covered now.

Still could be some surprises though. Wouldn't be a huge surprise to see Chelsea (who have been awful at home) slip up and go out. one of Inter or Dortmund will also be going out. Should still be a fun night for the neutrals :)

I gotta hand it to Abraham. Just seen that he scored again. I find it hard to believe that he would have got so much playing time if Chelsea did not have the ban. A lot of players have benefited but he seems to be top of the list.

He’s done really well, I think it’s only the tip of the iceberg too. The service has been really poor, we've been trying to walk it in most of the season and the crosses have been abysmal. If that improves he's going to be scoring for fun.

Rudiger being back at last is a nice bonus, he's been out since April. He's looking good so far.

A little payback for 2010. Inter have been sent down to Europa League by La Masia. :p Perez and Fati scored in Barcelona's first win at Giuseppe Meazza.

ELe3fGYXYAE9d8E.jpg

Happy with that. They needed a win, Barca had nothing to play for. They went with full power, Barca assembled a second team for the most part. All the four captains Leo, Pique, Busquets and Roberto didn't feature, Suarez and De Jong were on the bench, Neto played instead of Ter Stegen. Alena, Wague, Todibo and Perez all started the game and competed well against the current Serie A leaders. Now hopefully the guys hit the gas against Sociedad and Madrid.

When it comes to Inter, I like what I saw from Martinez, both tonight and back when we faced Inter at Camp Nou. No wonder he gets linked to biggest clubs in the world. A little too whiny for my taste but 90% of modern footballers are kind of like that anyway. :cautious:

Champions League history. Our boy Ansu Fati came off the bench, combined with Suarez and sent a perfect low shot past Handanovic in off the post, becoming the youngest goalscorer in history of Europe's biggest competition. Well done Ansu.

Assuming a catastrophe doesn't happen tomorrow for Atletico, all four La Liga clubs will be through to the last 16. We haven't lost it completely yet.

Sad that the recent 4-4 fiasco in London had an impact on Ajax going out. But that was a poor display from them tonight. Totally different to the football they displayed last season against better sides than Valencia. And what was Veltman doing there at Rodrigo's goal, completely ruined his teammates' offside trap.

Top 5 leagues rule the Champions League. Last 16:

4 clubs from La Liga
4 from Premier League
3 from Serie A
3 from Bundesliga
2 from Ligue 1

Sums up how contrasting this has become compared to the old European Cup, when only league champions participated. So many great clubs from other countries, as well as some from today's best leagues, have become feeder clubs to the rich, or totally irrelevant.

Draw will be held on Monday.

More like it in the second half. Good goals from Young and Greenwood. The second goal might not have counted if VAR was active. Hard tackle from Garner that you don't get off with these days. If you're caught, of course. :p

OLE's at the wheel. haha Wow, they must have heard Michael Owen ranting at half time. Penalty from Mata and another from Greenwood. He's starting to look like a big money player.

Decent job in the group. I will always remember it fondly, having seen our win in Belgrade.

Shame about Partizan. In the fifth match they were two goals up until the 88th minute away against AZ Alkmaar and even had an extra man. But they conceded twice until the end and lost a chance to get through the groups. Their win today and Manchester United beating AZ 4-0 would have gotten them through if they just didn't fold in the end like amateurs in Netherlands.

But it's going to be interesting to hear their explanation. This time they can't blame the Serbian president for their recent misfortunes. Those excuses are reserved for their inabilities to end Red Star's recent dominance in the domestic league.

2-2 draw away against Sociedad. Easy couple of goals, another chip from Griezmann and a simple finish from Suarez after Busquets got Messi one on one with a defense splitting pass. But not a good performance at all. The hosts went forward at will for large periods of the match, fortunately Odegaard lacked the end product when he had a chance to show it today. Real will go top by two points if they beat Valencia at Mestalla. Hoping Celades' men won't allow that, especially after a big boost of topping their Champions League group with a win over Ajax.

I am so tired of this referee circus. Should have had a penalty in the last minute. Blatant shirt pulling on Pique and dragging him into the ground when he was getting ready to head in from a cross, and they didn't even bother to check VAR. Sociedad were rewarded a penalty for a less harsh shirt pulling foul instantly at the beginning of the match. The ref ignored Llorente's handball claiming Busquets' foul a second earlier had an impact on that. Yet no consistency on the other end whatsoever! It's not the first, and I bet it won't be the last time something like this happens and is later swept under the rug as the media will continue to portray Barcelona as equal beneficiaries of questionable calls to Madrid. And don't get me started on offside calls. Obvious mistakes happen at our expense every other week nowadays. Just lay down a red carpet in front of them so people won't have to experience annoyances every weekend. Bloody hell...

Seriously getting fed up with this. Not even technology is putting an end to this farce. I want that win over Real Madrid on Wednesday even more now. I want to see the sporting and political wrath of Camp Nou bring the wanted result next week!

Leicester slip. Liverpool with a double digit lead over everyone now. Start preparing that champagne, scousers.

What's happening with Chelsea? 4th defeat in the last five league games. Now Bournemouth got the better of them, at Stamford Bridge.

At this point Manchester United could be knocking on the last Champions League spot. Less than a month ago the top four looked well established.

And guess what. Real rescued a late draw against Valencia. 4 minutes added time have expired, but hey let's play another one. After all, the favorite Spanish darling has a corner. :giggle: After a lot of scrambling in the penalty area, Benzema fired the ball into the net for a 1-1 draw. Soler was presented with an easy finish just before the 80 minute mark and scored, but it didn't turn out to be a winning goal.

Barcelona remain on top on goal difference, but that is not a tiebreaker here at the end of the season. If two teams remain level on points, whoever did better in head to head meetings will come out on top. And on Wednesday evening, one of the vital two matches of the season for this potential scenario and in general will be played.

Camp Nou will host more than just another football game. Spain will undoubtedly hear what we think of their recent decisions regarding our political leaders and no amount of security will stop that. But right now I hope Madrid will get a taste of the best football that Barcelona players have to offer. Guided by the best player in the world, the boys can make that dirty bunch suffer again.

Get ready for El Clásico.

So Barcelona will face Napoli in the last 16. Our opponents surprisingly sacked Carlo Ancelotti hours after they qualified to the knockout stage and replaced him with former Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, who was coached by Ancelotti. Strange decision from Napoli to say the least.

15764953411702.jpg

Napoli won 4 out of 6 points in the group stages against defending champions Liverpool, so that's another warning for Barca to be prepared. We already saw a couple of seasons ago in Rome that Serie A is not entirely about Juve these days, some teams are no pushovers either. The good thing is the first leg is in Italy. I just wish we could always play the 2nd leg at home. Our chances increase rather noticeably when that happens. Or I just don't trust the guys after the way they went out in the past two Champions League tournaments.

Valencia have a very realistic shot at reaching the quarterfinal and I hope they make it, remind us of their good old days in early 2000s.

One would think on paper that City should win this. But it's Real Madrid in the Champions League, an immensely dangerous opponent, while City still haven't achieved something of note on this level. Hope Pep and his players do well in this tie though.

Don't trust Atletico. Last season they had a great performance in the first leg against Juventus but were nowhere to be seen in the second, and Cristiano imposed himself the way he knows. Liverpool will bring even more heat at Anfield.

Good luck, Chelsea kids. Do the same thing to the Germans you did back in 2012. Listen to the manager, who was a very important member of that triumphant side. ;)

In the Europa League, Getafe have a very difficult challenge as they will face Ajax.

Our city rivals Espanyol are currently bottom of La Liga, but they topped their group. They drew Premier League side Wolves.

Sevilla will play Cluj.

Meant to say the timing of the decision was surprising. On the same evening when they qualified to the last 16. Not a good look. Just like when Ranieri was fired by Leicester after the first leg where they lost only narrowly to Sevilla. They turned the tie around at home under a new manager.

Yeah, I agree it is not the best look.

I can remember a point last season when Espanyol was not that far behind Barcelona in the league. I think I joked about them taking over Barcelona. Obviously, things change but to hear they are rock bottom is a surprise. Wolves seem to be coming up in the world. Not a bad side.

5 must watch ties, the other 3 have the potential to be great ones too. We’ve been spoilt!

Yes, Lampard knows how’s to beat Bayern in that stadium. I’m not really expecting to go through, I’m looking at it as an opportunity to learn for the years ahead. Much like the dip in the league at the moment, some of the players haven’t even played in the Premier League before. Running out of steam, learning to handle the slog over the winter months, breaking down teams parking the bus, how to handle top European sides in the knockout rounds.. all vital things they need to suffer and grow from if they’re going to be an elite side in 2-3 years time when they enter their prime playing days.

Embrace the difficult times as much as the great performances! I’ve enjoyed both sides of the coin this year. It so much more satisfying as a fan than expecting to win every game and picking a few top players to sign out of a hat when things aren’t going well. I’m sure expectations will be sky high in a couple of years time, which will be fun, but I’ll look back on these times with great fondness.
