That was a fun game last night. A third 5-2 scoreline at Camp Nou this season already, this time against Mallorca. Can't resist conceding apparently, but finding the back of the net hasn't been an issue. In fact the team will be the deadliest goalscoring machine at home in La Liga history if they manage to keep up this pace until the end of the season. Camp Nou was treated to 30 goals in the first 7 games.
First half was beautiful to watch. A performance that reminded of the best days. Good pressure, rushing the opponent into many mistakes, and everyone was combining well. De Jong proving again he was a good midfield investment. Griezmann doing better. Roberto with several good runs. Rakitic using the recent starting opportunities. This time it was imaginable them playing this good even without Leo. Unfortunately games like that don't happen very often, and when they do, they are against a side that will be battling to survive relegation. But I guess this is an improvement considering we were lucky to beat rock bottom Leganes a couple of weeks ago.
Speaking of Leo, he presented his record breaking 6th Ballon d'Or in front of us. And guess what else he did last night? He broke another record. A 35th La Liga hat trick. Showing off the golden ball before the game, picking up the match ball after the game. Simply too good again.
All of his goals were beautiful, and so were the other two, from his two attacking partners. MSG have struck again. Griezmann connected with Ter Stegen's goal kick delivery, found himself one on one with Manolo Reina and chipped him for the early opening goal. This was Ter Stegen's second assist of the season, having found Suarez earlier this season against Getafe in Madrid. Griezmann ended up assisting Messi for the second goal when the captain sent an unstoppable rocket in a blink of an eye outside the penalty area. After unlucky moment when Lenglet's tackle made Budimir's shot lob Ter Stegen for Mallorca's first goal, Leo sent a nice curled shot outside the box to restore the two goal advantage. The cherry on top though was the fourth goal right before halftime. Some beautiful one touch passing finished off by one of the cheekiest backheels from Suarez. One of his finest goals ever, which says a lot considering how many beauties Luis has scored over the years.
Second half was a few steps below the first. Although I could understand that partially with the result mostly safe. Ter Stegen made a poor judgement that allowed Budimir to score easily from Kubo's cross, but a few minutes before the end of the game, a good move resulted in Suarez serving the ball to Leo who sent it into the near corner, in off the crossbar for a historic hat trick. Barca could have had way more than five in the end, but Manolo Reina had a good evening, denying Griezmann, Suarez, Perez and Roberto good chances.
Sadly the highlights from La Liga official channel these days leave out a lot of good moments. Soon I expect them to leave out some goals as well if the teams end up scoring "too many".
But at least the full matches might be uploaded a year from when they were played.
It would be great to end the first half of the season on a high. Travelling to Milano to play Inter in a Champions League match that has no effect on Barcelona who sealed first place, but after that there are two difficult La Liga games. Travelling to La Anoeta, our most challenging ground in modern history to face Real Sociedad, then just a few days later hosting Real Madrid in a postponed El Clasico. We are currently level on points as that big date approaches (and while we have to face Sociedad away, Madrid will play Valencia at Mestalla), which will make that upcoming game one of those with highest stakes in recent La Liga memory. And I hope we keep the recent domestic edge.
