Theim and Zverev final was one of the best US Open Finals of the 2000s

After watching such a magnificent display of grit and effort I have to say that this final was one that should go down in history. After watching this match I immediately told all of my players that this is what the next level of tennis is. Breaking through all the barriers to get to the podium. A superb display of mental toughness from both sides of the court, but Theim just had the answers. Is there anyone else that thinks this passionately about this match?

This completely blows my mind....that people are saying this final even resembles something or anything remotely close to a historic finals match.

Not only was/is this the WORST final in the history of all finals matches! But it was a complete waste of my time any anyone else who has any sense at all regarding the way this game was intended to be enjoyed and played.

One guy was scared out of his mind, and the other guy was just doing what his dad told him to do since he was a little boy....DONT QUIT!!! YOU BETTER WIN!!!

This match was garbage! On so may levels....

....feel free to discuss. I want to know more about exactly how dumb people really are in and around this sport if Tennis.

I agree with OP here. It wasn't quality tennis, but it was a war of attrition, a gripping contest from start to finish. Both players had to battle their own demons for 4 hours. Zverev's mind and Thiem's body were failing them at the very end, but Thiem held on just long enough to heave himself over the finish line.

It was a good Final, as it had a lot of Drama, Passion, Ups & Downs ... but no way is was a good Final in the case of Tennis Skills. REAL good Finals have both ... ;-)

Was this final worse than 2017? Or 14? 16? The average USO final never had the drama and intensity of this one.

Yes both of them fought to the bitter end. The problem was the way they fought. It seemed that one player would play well and the other wasn't. Rarely did they both play well where you really saw ironclad competition.
Also agree it had drama, just would have been better drama if they could have played really well for at least 4 if not all 5 sets.

Yeah, Big 3 battles also have their lulls, but this one was really up and down. You definitely got glimpses of what they look like when on, but it was so spotty. At times Thiem was jumping out his shoes hitting groundies while Zverev was happy to groove them back. No real counterattack. Then Thiem would start missing to even it out.

I have some hope that if they can control their nerves in big moments, they could have some good battles. But they really aren't that young anymore.

It was entertaining.
I think tennis has gotten its sports entertainment thing spot on with this final.
Not a good final compared to say many a five setter in a slam final tennis wise, but I was besides myself in that final set with tension.

This reply makes me scratches my head. I am wondering what would make something a historic match. From what I saw it was two players showing exceptional utilization of all the shots in the book. Including exploiting Zverev weakness to the slice. All I saw was two players with amazing game planning and adjustment skills that were able to find the achillies heal of the opponent. Based on other finals this match has set a new basline for what grandslams should and will look like in the coming years.

This is what I am saying. Other finals had fight, but it was evident who would win. There was no predicting the winner of this even by the start of the 5 set.

Sometimes drama and storyline can make a match epic. The 2001 Wimbledon final was mostly a servebot exhibition with very few rallies (as most matches involving Goran were), but it's remembered as one of the GOAT matches for the significance and the storyline surrounding it.

I only watched parts of it, because it wasn't great. To be fair, I'd rank it top 2 or 3 USO finals on the past 10 years. Says more about the others than this one though.
