Tiger Woods, fan/force/fake?

Why is Tiger really at this match?

1) Fan of Roger (as stated by TV commentators)

2) Forced by Nike

3) Fake --> pretending to be a fan of Federer, but actually rooting for a
fellow American

I expect Federer offered him tickets. Even if you're not a fan, would you turn down tickets if he offered them to you?

Believe it or not, Fed has some celebrity fans!!Including Jim Carrey.Gwen Stefani's husband is a close friend of Roger.

Tiger's traitorous behaviour can be expected. He's made a couple notable bad judgment calls, especially when he tried to vote his former handicapped teammate from Stanford off the PGA Tour.

Tiger has been a fan of Roger's for a while. IMG (the marketing group that represents both players) had a hand in getting the two to finally meet today.

Here's an article about it:
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/othersports/3000AP_TEN_US_Open_Woods_Federer.html

Some quotes:
"I can relate to what he's going through ... with the success I've had over the years now," Federer said last week. "I follow him a lot. I'm always happy when he wins."

"I hope that we're going to meet soon in the future some time," he said.

At the British Open this year, Wood said he was an avid tennis fan.

"I watch tennis all the time. I was a huge (Pete) Sampras fan and now, obviously, I'm a huge Federer fan," Woods said.

What's so wrong about Tiger being Roger's friend? No offence, but some people are just looking for any conspiracy theory on why someone would be supporting Roger.

Another moron on this board. US Open is individual sports event, not team event!

Tell that to the french who are still fuming over Lance Armstrong.

Not every brit roots for Henman. Trust me! That's their choice. No one told them they have to.

The notion you have to root for your country man or woman in individual sports event typically come from narrow-minded people.

Whether Woods is a fan or not, that is most likely what happend.

there are always celebrities at the US Open....last year, Kevin Garnett was there and i believe Nicole Kidman was there too...Tiger's just another one of them.

Some people are morons. Tiger Woods has no obligation to root for Andy Roddick, and he can sit in Federer's player box if he damn well wants to, and if Federer wants him to. Why wouldn't the best golfer in the world route for the best tennis player in the world?

The label "American" is just a fiction. It only has meaning through the violent bludgeoning of those in control of the State. How is someone else's hallucinations about borders of any relevance to Tiger Woods' relationship with Federer?

I thought it was pretty cool that Tiger was there for the final. It it not often we get to watch the best player of their generation in two different sports, and possibly of all time, appreciate and respect each other...

here we go again with the comment of traitor. And the only word to describe your comment is pathetic, there's just no nice word I can put in there. And the only word to describe you is moron, as someone else stated so perfectly. Sorry, but just because someone is from the US does not mean they have to root for the American in a sporting event. They happen to have been following each others careers.

Amazing isn't it, Roger doesn't care only about tennis, and Tiger doesn't care only about golf. Yet another example of why both players are so exceptional. Both at the top of their game, both follow other sports, both do things to help others.

(edited to include a description that someone else described perfectly)

Exactly, the greatest golfer (current and perhaps future all time great), wanted to see what it is like to be with the greatest tennis player (current and perhaps future all time great)....

Nike deal all the way... just like when Nike gets two of their soccer teams (Inter Milan v. Man U) together for a "friendly".... Tiger was wearing three swoshes, as always...

Tiger can sit where the hell he wants and for the conspiracy theorists out there- it's not just Nike, they also share the same representation.

I agree.
While I don't think that Nike forced anything, I do certainly believe that they suggested it, and put it together, and made damn sure that it got a lot of media attention.

How many times did the telecast show Tiger in the stands? About as many times as Nike paid them to show Tiger in the stands.

And does no-one think that Enberg asking Federer about Tiger's presence as his very first question after the match was more than just a little odd??

Don't be surprised to see Federer and Tiger together in a Nike commercial soon.

I'm sure Federer was thrilled to meet and have a chat with Tiger before this big match. Just the little boost he needed. The only crappy part was having to talk about Tiger in the trophy presentation after the match. That was a pretty lame question by Dick Enberg. Tiger's in his box, big deal ...

Believe it or not, famous actors and actresses who are big celebrities can feel starstruck or be fans of others. In poker lots of celebrities playing against pros feel more starstruck since they are playing against such big names like Gus Hansen or Negraneau. Somewhat of a weak metaphor, but I hope you get the point =)

This is ridiculous. Tiger cant go watch Rog at the US open final? If he does, then its a conspiracy about Nike or its fake? Thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard.

Like Tiger needs more publicity...Let the man do what he wants.

if people were listening to the commentators, or even remotely paying attentin to the match, they would have realized or heard federer saying that woods and him are good friends and they have been trying to meet up for a while now. not becuase any of the BS reasons in the first thread or first few replies

Sigh... reading all the posts from people saying Tiger's a traitor because he supported Federer kind of makes me ashamed to be an American. I'd like to believe that I live in a tolerant, educated, open minded country, and I still do more or less, but sometimes certain people make me wonder... :\

Heard today on ESPN radio that Woods and Federer were filming a Nike commercial together. That, on top of Roger saying they had been trying to get together for a while should explain most of it. People who think he's unamerican for pulling for Roger are just ignorant.

I was there. The crowd was there for Roddick, but also very supportive of Federer. Nothing like the drunks that booed Pavel and Baghdatis when they missed first serves.

why is it 'unpatriotic'?

Lot of talk about woods supporting federer and not his fellow countryman roddick.
He is just a friend/fan.What would the critics say about Cahill coaching agassi against hewitt,or roche coaching federer against hewitt or landsdorp coaching sharapova or tarik coaching roddick before or gilbert coaching murray...c'mon they are professionals and it has nothing to do with patriotism.its not even the davis cup.
In cricket india has had coaches from new zealand and australia coaching and plotting against their own countries. Its their profession and nothing got to do with patriotism.
Tiger could be supporting Federer because they are nike stablemates, but at that level its only about mutual respect and admiration.

Having Tiger at the U.S. Open was a huge boost for the sport and the event. So what if he sat in Federer's box? Did he turn down Roddick's invitation? I don't think so.

Now that MJ is retired, I'd say that Tiger is the best athlete on the planet, IMHO. To have someone of his stature giving tennis a boost is good for all of us.

Just my humble .000002 drachmas worth.

Many have said Federer only has to win against at most 7 players to win a tennis tournament (including majors), while Tiger has to win against the entire field. Let's see if Tiger can win this week's World Match Play Championship having a field of only the 16 top golfers and improve his professional match play record.

Read an article on Bloomberg, the substance of which was:

Fed, despite his success, is not really a brand in the US...how many ads do you see featuring Fed??
So, in all likelihood, associating Fed with Tiger is a strategem of Nike and IMG to build Brand Fed in the US. Now just wait for the commercial....sounds eminently reasonable.

There are very few people in the world who can realte to the pressure or achievements of being dominant in the world for a few years in a given sport. Certainly i can not and nor can anyone on these boards. It was probably a shared experience like this which made them want to meet

Here's my $.02.

Federer and Tiger both no doubt heard the frequent comparisons being made between the two of them as they've been dominating their respective sports.

One or the other (or both) mused within earshot of a Nike or IMG-type how great it would be to meet the other one.

Seeing that no publicity is bad publicity the Nike or IMG-type got the contact info. together and the rest is history.

Not a big deal. Not saying the two didn't want to meet. It's a win-win for all concerned.
