Tsonga a serious contender for the USO

He had that hickup against Youzhny, but I think that more a result of him partying all night after Canada, and not having sufficient time to recover as a non-top eight player. Like someone said Novak won Canada in 2007, lost his first match in Cincinnati, and then went onto the final in New York. Think of 2014 a similar situation with Tsonga, except now there's no prime Federer to contend with.

On his current form we've seen that he can beat Murray, Djokovic and Federer. He's 3-0 against the big four over the american part of the season.

-Djokovic is stressed about marriage/the new baby. Playing like ****.
-Nadal is OUT
-Fed is playing well, but even in best-of-three matches he's struggling with Monfils, Pospisil, Cilic type players. Ferrer had bagel points on him. How is he going to fare in a best-of-5 setting?
-Murray… let's not go there.

Tsonga is more than a dark horse. In my book he's even odds with the top guys to take this. I would also put good odds on Dimitrov, Wawa and heck, even Ferrer

Agree. He's a contender, in my book.

This wasn't a 'hiccup' against Youzhny. He's been hiccuping all year apart from Toronto.

Last 4 slams: 4R, 4R, 4R, 2R.

Why does this guy get so much hype? It's not 2008 anymore. Take this guy off your radar along with Berdych.

His lack of results put him outside the top 8 seeds and could mean 4 tough matches - he's never shown the ability to hold his peak level that far - except the 08 AO - never since.

But he would be an incredibly popular winner. I can't even imagine the party. He might not make his 1st match in Shanghai... :)

Earlier this year:

Federer d. Tsonga 6-3, 7-5, 6-4

But Tsonga only played really well in the second set - the other sets were just average to good. And the US Open has faster courts than the AO. I don't see Tsonga beating Federer if Fed's serve is doing well.

That said, I think Tsonga will not make an upset because 3 out of 5 set tennis is way different from two set tennis. Tsonga's been inconsistent as of late, even from tournament to tourney, making me think he'll bow out in 5 in the 3rd round or earlier.

I agree. If he is ever going to win a slam this is it. It is now or never for him, he will never have another chance like this again.

Just don't like Tsonga when having to face multiple top players in succession in Bo5, maybe he could get it done if the draw opened up for him

I agree that Tsonga is definitely one to watch during the USO and if he get's hot then a final is certainly not beyond him....agree though in that his Slam results to date have been questionable at best.

Surely though you are not serious about Ferrer....don't get me wrong, I respect the guy for many reasons but surely a QF appearance is absolute best we can expect of him. Obviously anything is possible but that seems a stretch even for a Dark Horse conversation.

yeah Ferrer lacks the firepower to win a slam unless a couple of the top guys fall/get sick etc.

His record against the big four makes him more of an underdog than guys like Tsonga and Wawrinka, but with Djokovic crashing out in straights to the likes of Robredo I'd say for Ferrer to surprise is not an impossibility

Tsonga hasn't actually done that poorly in slams this year if you consider who he lost to:

R16 at FO and Wimbledon - lost to Djokovic
R16 at the AO - lost to Federer

It's not exactly shameful, only losing to top 3 opponents. With a little more luck in the draws he maybe could have made QFs or better. He couldn't win a set in those matches but you can put that down to low confidence + top 3 opponents playing very well.

He beat Dimtriov, Federer, Murray, Djoker to get the title. Him and Berdych are very good players.

I think Jo has an outside shot BUT he is not a serious contender. I feel Jo has the talent BUT can he reproduce the week he had in Toronto again in New York? I doubt it. Jo has shown he can be mentally fragile and a bit emotional. In Toronto, Jo was hungry he believes he can win a slam. Jo has a chance but I think it depends on the draw.

I see his prospects similar to how I see that of Wawrinka. If he is "on", it's really tough to stop him. It's just that neither of the two can seem to sustain that high level for more than 2 sets. Excluding Stan's Aussie victory and Monte Carlo, I can't think of him maintaining that high of a level consistently throughout a match.

Wawrinka is ranked much higher than Jo he is the third seed. Stan has a better chance than Jo and most players because he has the experience of actually winning a slam. Although I agree Stan has not played great since Monte Carlo. I think at the FO the pressure got to Stan suddenly he was one of the favorites to win. Stan is still adjusting to the pressure people EXPECT MORE from Stan now and he knows it. Hopefully Stan can mentally adjust to his success and do well in New York.

No he isn't. He is a fodder just like Wawrinka, berdych etc who has no winning mentality. After so many years at the highest level youd think these guys could bother the top 3-4 someday but they just can't. Why i don't know, they have the game, but fails. Okey if you fail a year maybe, but being a pigeon to the top 4 for SO many years is just embarresing and shows lack of motivation to get to their level. It all can't be about talent and that Djokovic, federer nadal is just better tennis player, its much more.

Tsonga will never win a slam, he is a waste of talent.

Early 2009, Federer d. Del Potro 6-3, 6-0, 6-0

honestly, Fed and Rafa are just shadows of themselves nowadays. I'm not even talking about win-output. Federer, despite his decent season relative to last season, is hitting like a completely different player than the Federer of old, so much less explosiveness in his movements.

this notion is heightened after watching the US Open 2004 Final.

ahem, Tsonga has beaten everyone of the Big-4 in a slam. And he just beat 3 of them + Dimi in Toronto
That said, Tsonga is only my fifth favorite for the title - Djoko, Fed, Wawa, Andy, Tsonga, Dimi in that order.

As I said above, he just did. He won 4 tough matches in a row in Toronto - albeit in 4 days rather than 8. And best-of-5 is a different animal, but still

He partied all night? Is there something to support this? And how is he your dark horse if you give him even odds with the top guys?

He is a contender, not convinced he is a serious contender. I would like him to win a slam though.

Doubt it. Tsonga may have beat a few top ten players and won one title, but he's never got truly far at a Slam.

I don't remember a GS where Tsonga had better chances.

A few top 10 players? More like the first 3 contenders for US Open according to bookies. Plus Dimitrov which is in the 4-6 group with Wawrinka and Tsonga himself. Like I said, he never had a better chance before. And this also applies for almost everybody in the draw except for Djokovic, Federer and Murray. This US Open is the most open GS for quite some time.

He's a bit overhyped after his Canada run. Novak, Federer, and Dimitrov all played like garbage. And Murray should've won (he was up a break... against Tsonga).

Tsonga has won 2 Masters titles. That makes him the only current player to win multiple Masters titles other than Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Murray plus the veteran Hewitt and soon-to-be-retired Davydenko!

but he's never got truly far at a Slam.

He made the final of the 2008 Australian Open, 2 semi-finals at Wimbledon (2011 & 2012) and 1 semi-final at Roland Garros (2013).

However, I don't really see him as a contender at Slams anymore. But I could be wrong!
