Underrated biggest choke in Tennis History - Federer-Djokovic 2011 US Open Semis

When Federer held his nerve he dispatched Djokovic in 4 sets at the 2011 French Open.

If 2011 and 2015 were Djokovic's best years then Federer was his biggest rival in those years.

To me, this match doesn't mean a lot. Sure, it takes away one slam title from Djoker. But so what? Djoker would still lead 23-20 or 23-21.. Djoker's still keeps his world #1 ranking. Not much changes here, except that we get a Fedal final at the USO. This one to me was by far the least painful "choke" by Fed. I'm not 100% confident that Fed beats Nadal in that final anyway. And as another poster said, maybe this experience is what allowed Fed to beat Djoker in the 2012 Wimbledon final, which allowed Fed to eventually get back to world #1 that year(albeit short-lived).

The 2005 AO semi stunk badly. Had Fed served out the match in the 4th set while up 5-2 in that tiebreaker, then a couple of things most likely would have happened.

1. He destroys Hewitt in the final, which allows Fed to have 4 straight years of winning 3+ slam titles.
2. He ends the year 83-3 instead of 81-4, which allows him to break Mac's 1984 record for the best winning pct.
3. Fed now has a 4-peat at 3 different slam events, which breaks a tie with Borg(4-peat at 2 slam events)

That's not what I said.
I said that very few people talk about this chokejob compared to Wimby 2019. You could just read the OP to know that, it doesn't take much effort.

Edit: Unless you were being serious with this comment in which case I'm confused haha
well yes of course, recency bias and more people getting into tennis within the last few years.

Yes 05 AO is by far Fed's worst loss since it was at his peak and is basically the only chink in his armor.

But at least if he were to lose, it was by the skin of his teeth to a guy playing the big beast tennis. It could have been worse.

Everyone goes on about the 41 match streak by Djokovic until he ran into Fed at RG 11, but forget that the rivalry was a lot closer than people think...

How many people know that Fed was on an 11 match winning streak before the loss to Djokovic at AUS 11 and won 48 of 51 matches (plus conceding 1 walkover), after the loss to Djokovic at US 11, and before the loss to Djokovic at Rome 12 ???

When viewed like that, it is easy to see how matches between them are gonna be decided by paper-thin margins and balls hitting the lines on match-point...

This is why I struggle a bit with 2011 Djoker as such a GOAT season because when one point changes the entire read on it, that’s a lot. Nevertheless he did convert and had that 10-1 H2H overall

Yeah Fed choked worse on the 2nd MP at the USO than he did in any other individual point I can remember. Really makeable FH and he doesn’t even put it in the court. You could see it in his face as well right before that point, that moody look he shot across to Djoker while Djoker was walking around getting applauded, and then the way he fumed after the match about the shot that had just happened… he had totally let it get to him.

Win by an Inch or by a Mile, winning is winning.

Havent you heard the Quote ? Vin Diesel said it....

Don't struggle so much in accepting reality, get some clarity ..... 11-1 from AO2011 to AO2012 against Fedal..... These 2 fellows won all 4 slams an year before and suddenly they lose, that is your goat season ....

Sampras called it the GOAT Season, he knows more than you ever will, so get some clarity, don't struggle so much in accepting reality, Federer could not convert the MP because he did not deserve to win ......such a weakling he was against Djoker in crunch situations..... Stop eulogizing that man.

Playing levels don't mean much in sports, everyone on their good day has playing levels which are high, berdych, tsonga, roddick, you name them, even medvedev, all of them have had some days when their levels were high, but what seperates a winner and a loser is mental toughness and ability to close out points.
