We are closer to the 2030s than the 2008 Wimbledon final

Marat Safin's famous win over Sampras in NYC in Y2K was more than half a lifetime ago for the tall Russian

Instagram did not exist the last time Federer won the USO & RG and Nadal won AO & WI

iPhone's did not exist the last time Federer beat Djokovic at a slam final

Venus Williams had already won 4 majors (more than half her final amount) by the time Coco Gauff was born

Anyone who was alive when Sampras-Agassi met in a slam final for the first time is now AT LEAST 30 (to piggy back, anyone who was alive the last time these two met is now 18 or older)

When Roger Federer shocked Pete Sampras at Wimbledon in 2001:

- Global markets were still feeling the effects of the bursting of the dot com bubble.
- The iPod did not exist.
- The Twin Towers still existed.
- Windows Me (Millennium) was the latest Microsoft release.
- Trailers were starting to crop up for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone...
- Shrek had just released in cinemas though.
- No one had heard of the XBOX.
- Wikipedia had been around for just 6 months.
- MSN Messenger was all the rave for instant communication along with text messaging, with no Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Instagram or WhatsApp in the picture.
- Jannik Sinner was yet to be born.

Back in 2004-2006, in Fed's best years, HD footage was almost non existent and people were still watching tv mostly on the old CRT screens. Now we have 4k and even 8k :)

When Federer played Gstaad starting on July 6 1998 (his first pro tournament according to the ATP website)

The Chicago Bulls were only about a month removed from their last championship.

The New York Yankees had not even started their 98-00 3 peat (and were in the midst of their 125 win season)

The Titanic was the #1 movie in the US for the longest amount of time in 1998.

Wayne Gretzky had not yet retired from the NHL.

Britney Spears debut single ...Baby One More Time was not yet released.

The Detroit Red Wings were Stanley Cup Champions

The John Elway led Denver Broncos were Super Bowl Champions.

The first Harry Potter book was only a year old.

The late 90s were quite a time in US film:
In 1997, there was Titanic, Good Will Hunting, LA Confidential, As Good as It Gets, MIB, etc.
In 1998, there was Saving Private Ryan, Shakespeare in Love, Truman Show, The Big Lebowski, Armageddon, There's Something About Mary, etc.
In 1999, there was Fight Club, Toy Story 2, Green Mile, American Beauty, Sixth Sense, Being John Malkovich, The Hurricane, etc.

Also, the Wayne Gretzky one blows my mind. The fact that there were periods where Fed was a pro the same time Gretzky & McDavid were pros is insane!!

Now that I'm 30 I've fully began realizing just how fast things change around the world over the years. Only in recent years did I get the realization that the world I knew as a youth back in the 90s & 2000s is nothing like the world I know now

No offence meant here because I'm the same age as you, but we're not even old really, lol. I mean yes a lot of things have changed, but there are people significantly older than 30 on this forum and everywhere else in the world that would laugh their asses off at any 30 year old talking about how much the world has changed. Just use that as your frame of reference instead of pretending like you're old.

Haha yeah I know we're still really young in the big picture and if I had said this to my parents (or anyone around their age) they would laugh and cringe at me simultaneously. Also, we're still considered "young adults" by the majority of definitions since we've still spent significantly more time as a "kid" (0-18) than as an adult (18+).

I still think that people in our age group nowadays have experienced a lot of significant change however, despite not being on Earth for that long. Like relatively speaking, I feel like 20-30 year old's back in like the 80s didn't experience as much change at that point in their lives as we have now. I could be totally wrong though especially since I wasn't alive then

2002 was the last season where no big 3 or 4 member won a single major.

In Sports:
- Lleyton Hewitt was the top dog in men's tennis at the time finishing as YEN1 for the second time in a row
- Sampras and Agassi were still active (in fact, they competed in the US Open finals)
- Brazil won the World Cup in South Korea in what was one of the most controversial WC's in recent memory
- LA Lakers led by Kobe (RIP) and Shaq just completed their three-peat
- LeBron James was still in High School (Jordan was still active but with the Wizards; let's pretend this never happened lol)
- Michael Schumacher was in the midst of his five-peat WC between 2000-2004 (Lewis Hamilton was just 17 then and now he's equaled the legendary German in WCs and surpassed him in wins!)
- Tiger Woods was also at his zenith winning his 8th major at just 26 years old (basically every pro you see right now was still a kid then)
- Ronaldo & Messi had yet to turn pro (in fact, futbol was dominated by another Ronaldo best known as R9)
- Baseball was in the midst of the steroid era (Mike Trout was 11 years old lol)
- Canada won gold in Salt Lake on American soil over the US in an epic gold medal game (one of my fav childhood memories)

In Film:
- Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter had just become film series
- Pixar was killing it with Toy Story 1, Toy Story 2 & now Monsters Inc. (Finding Nemo & The Incredibles came out in the two years after)
- Why not make Spiderman a film series too ($$$$$$$)

In Music:
- The music charts were dominated by artists such as Eminem, Avril Lavigne, Usher, Nelly, Ashanti & J-Lo (wow this gives me a ton of nostalgia lol)
- Eminem's "Lose Yourself" was ranked as the top song of the year

In Politics:
- George Bush was still in his first term as US President (we're about to have our third different Prez since)
- SARS virus was beginning to spread

In Tech/Business:
- Nokia 3310, Blackberry Pearl & Sony Ericsson Walkman were the top selling phones
- Blockbuster and HMV were at their peak in sales in a world before Netflix & Spotify
- E-Bay was the biggest online shopping site and Yahoo was the biggest search engine (Amazon & Google were still infants)
- Abercrombie & Fitch was the most popular clothing brand

Bill Clinton was still the US President the last time none of the big 3 played at a major (not counting qualifying rounds) and that was at the 1998 US Open. We're about to have our 4th different President since then

I'd recommend one for gaming. Nadal e.g. has starred in a video game throughout a 14-year span! First: Virtua Tennis 3 (2006) Most recent: AO Tennis 2 (2020)!

Agree in general, but I'm not so sure about the bolded part. I think there was a lot of technological change from say 1950 to 1980, but like you, in order to check from a solid source, and not just the internet I'd have to ask one of my grandparents or some older member here. Obviously our parents born in the 60's and 70's have seen huge changes though. Bigger than any we're likely to see IMO. The internet boom being the biggest one, along with the advent of the smartphone.

And having said that I actually wonder what types of changes we're likely to see (or have already seen) in the next 20-30 years. Some really new things have taken off even in the last 5 years or so like live streaming, but I'm not convinced our generation will see anything truly groundbreaking like our parents did. I wonder often about how much farther technology can actually go, or what the world will look like in 100 years or 1000 when we're all passed on. Not meaning to be morbid, but I do think about that often.

We are further in time from Sampras' first slam win than that was from the start of the Open Era.

Thiem's USO win is as far from Nadal first slam win as Sampras' first slam win was from Borg's first slam win.

The gap between Borg's and PETE's first titles is one year longer than the one between RAFA's and Thiem's?

Crazy thing is, we are A LOT further in time in that scenario. Sampras' first slam was 1990 (22 years after start of OE) and 1990 was 30/31 years ago

Also, both Nadal and Federer's first slam wins in 2005 and 2003, respectively, are closer to Pete's first slam than Fedal's wins are to the current day

Hockeytown is now a ghost town

Hence why I thought it was worth a mention lol. If the team was still great it wouldn't have the same effect. They were great for a long while after 97-98 though. They still won 2 more Cups in 02 and 08 and were finalists in 09. And they made the playoffs for some 22?? straight seasons I think.

A couple of months before Jeff Tarango's famous meltdown at Wimbledon in 1995, including his wife slapping the chair umpire, there was a software engineer in San Francisco who wanted to use email to spread the word on events. So he created a list. His name was Craig.

That's how old I am :)

Lendl-McEnroe's 1984 RG finals is closer in time to the polio vaccine discovery (early 1950s) than it is to 2021 o_O:oops: - okay this one really trips me out even though I wasn't alive yet when this match took place
