What do you use for hybrid set up?

I want to explore alternatives to full bed Poly.
Play it safer for arm than full poly.
Don't want full extreme arm friendly noodle,
but just something more in the middle.

I never break Poly.
Always change it at 10-15 hours.

What are common options?

What goes in mains?
What for cross ?

Gut or synth mains and poly cross?

What tension if playing full poly at 50?

Please specify strings I can buy from TTW.
(They don't sell Lux Gut)

Many have poly mains for maintaining control but with a multi or gut in crosses for added softness. I have used origin in the past in hybrid. I think you can start with the poly you are using now and use a multi or gut for crosses. If you change everything sometimes one is lost. For instance I’m going for my go to poly Sonic pro in the mains but with origin in crosses, used to have origin in the mains before. And 4G in crosses.

Hi TTPS ... hope all is well.

You will have a lot of decisions to make ... but there are a lot of threads here where a lot of us trying to answer that question ... "what next after fb poly".

Some general consensus:

- not likely to match fb poly spin ... contenders gut/poly ... and hybrids with zx.
- multi/poly vs poly/multi|sg ... m/p more arm friendly, maybe more spin, poly/x more durable
- not that many low-mid powered multi ... velocity, ppc, rip control

Check out threads:

- gut/poly
- velocity
- gut/cream
- gut/velocity

velocity is a decent non-poly cross, but won't match poly cross full spin.

Your biggest problem will be giving up full poly spin and control. You might match the spin with gut/poly ... but from my limited experience with it control will take some string tension experimentation, and expect higher launch angle.

If you go the hybrid route ... plan on figuring it out NEVER.

Sampras would wipe me off the court using a wooden racket.
I'm not going to go nuts about it.
I just want to pick something and go with it.
After that, I focus on my mechanics and shot selection.

I can deal with a little less spin.
I might start swinging less hard anyways.

If I tried gut/poly, what goes on mains and what goes on crosses?
Are the strung at the same tension?

Not all gut is equal power ... same with poly.

My brief experience and preferences as tension feedback:

- liked fb rpm blast @52
- liked fb tonic @55
- liked fb cream @50
- tonic/cream @55/50 was about right for me.

Lot's of people like gut 60+ ... and some like poly in the 40s ... no rule here other than almost everyone strings gut/poly hybrids with gut main higher tension than the poly cross. 5lbs differential is typical.

One other thought if you can deal with 2/3 poly spin ... and maybe some straightening of strings. String fb velocity 16g natural (black if poly like stiff feel is your preference ... I like natural) @52. Cheap test ... and it will give you a quick answer if "poly-like multi" works. After a lot of post poly experimenting, I keep coming back to fb Velocity.

Solinco at 50.
45 would be too loose, and less spin.
55 would be too tight, and less spin.

One of the advantages of testing a new string with fullbed is feedback (feel, tension, etc) without variables.

fyi ... a multi/poly hybrid will be better with a smooth poly cross. A shaped poly ... like Solinco tourbite will eat through multi mains pretty fast. Velocity is durable for a multi ... but still a multi.

I'll string velocity 16g natural in the mains, (55)
and Poly in the cross. (50)
That's what I'm doing, except the cross is actually a material called Zyex, which performs a lot like poly but is much softer. Tension maintenance is a weakness with it though but I imagine you could get 10-15 hrs from it.

If I wasnt using that, it wpuld be isospeed cream.

After 10 hours, do you cut out the Poly cross and just restring the Poly?
Gut lasts longer, right?

There are many here that string their own racquets that do that ... seems to be 10-20 hours. I think you would notice poly going dead as a cross only less than fb poly ... so it would depend on your sensitivity and arm concerns. I would think you could play a poly like cream until the gut broke. I cut out tonic/cream at 20 hours, and it was still playing the same to me (and I have a sensitive post-TE elbow).

It all depends on what you're looking for on it. My cold weather hybrid is gut mains (VS or pacific) and tourbite cross. Warm weather Tourbite mains and vanquish or prostacked cross. I'll also occasionally play vanquish mains but it pops quick that way. The softer main will provide more power and feel while the poly main will provide more control and typically more spin.

What is gut/poly ?

Did you mean gut/main, Poly/cross ?
Yes.
Typically when someone refers to a hybrid, they will state it (main string)/(cross string).

So for example:
VS/PL2 = Babolat VS gut in the mains/Krischbaum Proline 2 in the cross.
L/C = Klip Legeng (gut) main/Isospeed Cream (poly) cross
V/C = Head Velocity main/Isospeed cream cross

I think @ByeByePoly has good advice about trying hybrids. Try full bed of a certain string first to see what it plays like. Then think about combining certain strings that you like.

However, I started my hybrid journey buying a reel of OGSM (s-gut) to use as a cross. Then proceeded to test a bunch of poly in the mains. This was hoping I can protect my son's arm as well as myself. I'm not sure that it's the most ideal for that intended goal.

A poly tends to be low powered. But when crossed with OGSM feels pretty good when fresh. But as the poly loses tension, the stringbed gains power. Poly in full bed (fb) maintains similar levels of power even as it de-tensions.

Do you have a more recent video of yourself playing? I heard you've bumped up to playing 4.0. But from previous videos, I think you can play with a good multi. You'll hate S-gut. But nothing wrong with playing with poly as long as you re-string at good intervals which it sounds like you are.

I like playing Velocity/Cream because:
Velocity fb has good control, but not enough spin, a bit under-powered for my taste, and too dead feeling.
Cream is a soft poly with average power, average spin, average feel, better than average tension maintenance. Nothing great, but nothing bad. But it does have a fairly slick surface because it's a poly.

The mains contribute to the majority of the stringbed performance. So starting with Velocity in the mains, I cross with Cream. The Cream supports Velocity mains by: enhancing spin potential, boosting power a bit, adding feel.

The strings last about 15hrs or so and then Velocity starts to lose its teeth. At about 20hrs, the combo also loses too much power. So no power, no spin and I'm compensating with my strokes again and then my arm starts to hurt. So plan on re-stringing after 15hrs.

Gut/Poly is very interesting.

Gut is a very textured string. Pulling through the grommets and you can feel the friction. In full bed, it has a lot of power, good control (so I've heard). But not as much spin potential and doesn't last as long since it notches. But crossed with a smooth poly, the power is toned down, there is more spin potential and the gut lasts longer because it doesn't notch as fast. You can also cut out the poly and re-string just the cross again.

I've hybrid with Gut/Multi (Velocity) as velocity is low powered and can tame the gut. It also is slicker than gut so more spin potential. Velocity will wear out much quicker, so I again cut out Velocity and just re-string the cross.

Gut/poly for playability and longevity. Recommended to string the natural gut mains tighter than the poly crosses.

If you go with polys like 4G, Max Power or Cream, you can pretty much play until the gut snaps. Those have the best tension maintenance that I've experienced. Cream is the softest most lively cross whereas 4G and Max power are more muted but consequently more harsh on the arm.

I am normally cutting the strings out at 8-10hrs shortly before they break where the string bed has lost a good bit of control. 4g and Max Power are the two crosses I am using. No need for me to cut just the poly. The whole string bed is shot in 8-10hrs if the gut hasn’t broken already.

I used a poly main/synthetic gut hybrid for 10+ years...for the most part Solinco Tour Bite 1.20/Gosen OG Sheep Micro Super 1.25. I recently went to the Wilson Burn 100 CV racquet and with it's stiffness of 69 decided to try something else...a multifilament main with a slick poly cross. I can't comment on durability yet because I've only got about 6 hours of play on it (very little notching yet) but I'm absolutely loving the combination of power, comfort, feel, and spin I'm getting from this combo.

My multi main is definitely the Head Velocity MLT (just have to decide between 16g and 17g and whether I'll use natural color or black) and my poly cross is either going to be Wilson Revolve (loving it right now), IsoSpeed Cream, or Yonex Poly Tour Fire.

I tried a full multi set up, both with the Velocity MLT and the Prince Premier Control, but it was too much of a departure from what I was used to.

I guess what I'm saying is don't be afraid to try anything and everything to find what works best for you!

That is a great option. Played Tour Bite 1.25/ Gosen Micro Sheep 1.30 for a few years in the RF97 at 48/52-50/54. Best set up I found for poly/syn gut or poly/multi. Lasted 8-10 hours and I would then cut it out. Actually never broke a string with this set up and the RF97 which is saying something because the RF eats strings.

I think I tried Synth-Gut, and it felt like a wet nooble.
Maybe I will try a multiF.

I want to change it up, and play it safe for the arm.

You can debate strings all you want. But why can't you put away a mid court ball? This is the real question for your lack of progression!

I think some of that depends on your playstyle and racket frame. I'm mostly using a 93P playing a lot of doubles. I get a lot more life out of a string bed in that racket than I ever did with gut/poly in a Pure Drive. For me gut/4G was a 15 hour thing with a PD. I've been experimenting with different crosses so I've been cutting out before I normally would with my 93P but I imagine I could get a good 20hrs and a serviceable 30 hrs from Gut/Cream.

For now, I ordered a set of Babolat VS Touch Natural Gut 16 String.

I'll use my Pure Drive, and try this pack of Gut as full bed, and see how it goes.
At least I will know what full Gut plays like.

If I strung at 50, what should I string Gut at?

I am just taking it easy for winter, so I don't need optimal spin.
Just want to dial it back and play it safe for the arm

Like 65 and make sure your grommets are pristine.

Also prestretch beforehand.

as @USPTARF97 said, Rut Ro Raggy

Come on man. You do a thread about hybrids and now you are doing full gut? Complaining about syngut being a noodle and now full gut? Playing full poly and now full gut? New to stringing and now doing full gut? Fail Fail Fail Fail. Expensive Fail.

At least put some poly in the crosses man.

Is your arm hurt??

Everyone should play fb gut at least once if they can. I did with bab vs 16 ... @55 ... and wasn't overly powerful for me. I broke it in 13 hours, but strings looked good except one bad notch ... never knew if me or bad spot on string.

Don't bring gut near your stringing machine until you've thoroughly cleaned your clamps and your gripper.

Yea, good point. I did not like full bed Synth Gut.
I have several rackets, so I will order another set of gut.
I will do one hybrid and one full gut and compare!
Cost is not a concern. Gut is only $42

I have a prepackaged hybrid from prince called warrior touch. I am planning to put the prince premier touch in the mains and prince tour xt in the crosses in my prestige mp and see how it plays. I heard it’s a pretty good and soft on the arm hybrid.
