What does Sinner need to achieve to be worth the hype?

For the people who think Sinner is overrated, what does he have to achieve till he's worth the hype?

Except for two or three people, I think he's neither over- nor underhyped. He's one of my favourite players and I think he can win a handful of slams. If he did that, would you still think, the current hype is too much? How many slams would he need to win then to live up to it?

Masters title would be a start.

I’m not gonna write him off entirely just bc of this.

But it’s clear he needs to level up immensely both physically and on serve if he’s going to get anywhere.

I still believe he can win Slams but he will need a transformation to do so. He needs to have man strength. Altmaier just out-physicalled him at the end there, he wanted it more, played with more power, and exerted himself more.

That cannot happen, ever again. He needs a total fitness program revamp, and he needs to spend hours on his serve. Also he has this habit of moving forward too soon and getting caught out. He is still a very inexperienced tennis player given how late he started the game. There’s a lot to fix.

More matches and more years on tour. He is still 21.

At his age, Fed was even worse and then improved immensely. He's not going to have a Fed's career of coure, but a long career is ahead of him and he could end up with an ATG career when it's all said and done.

Kinda agree on most of it.
Though, I thought his fitness had improved quite a bit. Wasn't sure what was wrong with him today, he didn't look like he was feeling completely well (again..). But maybe it was just a fitness issue - than he really needs to improve on it a lot - it's not acceptable to run out of gas in a second round five setter after winning the first round in straights.

Grand slam. He was hyped by not just 2 people on TTW, he was hyped by all commentators and youtube channels.
He was hyped more than Tsitsipas and even Medvedev.
Grand slam or a bust.
So one slam would be enough? I would actually bet money on it to happen - wanna bet against it? ;)

With the 2-3 people comment I was just talking about those completely overhyping him - like he's gonna have a Big3 like career, which is pretty save to say that it's not gonna happen.
But what are statements from other people hyping him, which you do think is over-the-top!

No you asked what is required. Betting now means nothing. Till now he is a failure and will be till he wins a slam. That's the point.

This is what I don't get about a lot of people around here, calling someone a failure if he's had a career like Sinner at the age of 22.
Yeah and the betting thing was just a joke.

Fed still had that win over Sampras at Wimb and a masters title.

And unless Sinner wins Wimb 1 month from bow, Fed will have had a slam title too.

The one thing you could hope for after today’s defeat is that this will be Sinner’s Gaston moment. Carlos suffered a terrible loss against Hugo Gaston at the Paris Masters in 2021 (I know a lot of you are familiar with this), and went down in straights after being a break up in the first and 5-0 (!) in the second. That took it’s toll to the point where he just hid beneath a towel.

The Alcaraz of today emerged after that miserable defeat. Could something similar happen to Sinner after today’s horrible letdown against Altmaier? Who knows, maybe not. But this would be a great starting point for him to truly reassess himself and his game and figure out what he needs to do advance.

Let's start with a Masters title? I have no clue why he's been tipped as a favourite for Grand Slams in the last 2 years when he's not even won a single M1000 or a big title. He wins a few Mickey Mouse tournaments and the hype train goes nuts. And then, he goes on to flop every big tournament/match he plays. It's the same pattern, all the time. He has to win something noteworthy to deserve this level of hype. But somehow people already put him above Tsitsipas and Zverev who have achieved so much more than this 1D ball basher. It's laughable really.

Was he really tipped as a tier one favourite for a slam?

Vs Zverev one argument could be that he already has two slam wins over top10 opponents, which took Zverev how long - till 25?

And if he‘s a 1D player, what are Zverev‘s multiple dimensions?

I am not even hyping Zverev here. I have always been #ABZ but there is no denying where the hype came from. Zverev has won YEC twice, multiple masters titles across surfaces and an OG medal. These are unquestionable achievements, despite being BO3. The hype is misplaced but not undeserved. Sinner, on the other hand... lol.

I agree. Zv was legit with multiple titles but no one could've predicted the dud he turned out to be.
