And then there's also 2016 Federer. He wasn't in bad form, but at that point it was a mismatch age-wise. So only fair if Fed had won over Novak in 2009 or 2010.

Djokovic has never lost in AO SF or F. Fun fact though: the year Roger turned 35 he lost in Wimbledon SF (lost in the final 3 times before though), which is his only loss at that stage. Same with Rafa at RG (no F losses however). Let's see if Novak beats the 35 curse. He's the favourite, but Zverev and Medvedev combo is really dangerous and there are some other dangerous players (PCB, RBA). If he gets Tsitsipas in SF then he's probably good. Semi final loss would still most likely keep him at #1 for a few extra weeks (depends on Zverev ATP Cup opponents), so he could get something out of it even if he loses (which I hope won't happen, but in sport you never know).

Agree that it is quite possible that Novak could lose, maybe even earlier than the SF.

Chung Hyeon will not be in the draw to play Bogie-man this year but funnily enough Kwon Soon-Woo is one of the most improved players on tour, so maybe a Korea youngster avenges for the second time in four years!

Medvedev is obviously gatekeeping the title. Anyone who has been watching the Mad Lad's level so far at ATP Cup will know he might be an even more fearsome proposition for Djokovic now than he was three months ago in Bo5.

Karmic reality and the concept of "Tennis Gods" is a fun thought experiment.

I always joke that the Tennis Gods are a vengeful mob. They deprived the US Open crowd of a Fedal match as punishment for their boorish, drunken behaviour over the years.
