Well, several big companies such as Samsung and Apple have refused to confirm whether their cobalt supplies have been tainted by child labor. The supply chains aren't very transparent. But more than half of the world's cobalt supply comes from Congo, so it seems likely that it's quite ubiquitous in things like phone batteries and electric car batteries. I don't have any list of companies that are safe/bad, but I'm sure there's info out there about who's taking the issue seriously.

Thank you for digging this one out.
The head of the locals are bribed heavily. So they help to cover up kids working there. Whenever the inspection comes, the kids were made to run away from there or forced to act like as if they are playing. Not sure if it is true - I read that certain invasion occurred because that place is rich in Lithium.

imagine a mental patient who was once in a asylum watches this. he would feel kinda uncomfortable or? its kinda unfair they make such bad image of mental patients. movies like this just boost the bad image ..but ok maybe its a good movie..

Did see Joker in the theater a good while back, but didn't get around to saying anything about it.

Dysfunctional man lives with his mother, nasty city is very mean to man indeed, man spirals further and further into madness and lashes out. Crazy man becomes hero to other deranged people. The New Yorker guy called it a miserabilist manifesto or something like that (lol), and it applies. The plot is hardly as forcefully paced as you expect from a film a in this genre, such as Nolans installments, and never is there any great sense of urgency. Instead, it's more of a series of episodes, the camera more or less always fixated on Joaquin Phoenix's character, inviting us to go, "look at how this guy going crazy alright." Luckily for the film, Phoenix does his part very well, delivering a mesmerizing performance that is often uncomfortable to behold. The film gives some explicit nods to Chaplin, and Phoenix channels this influence into a very physical performance of his own.

More than Chaplin the real influence for this film, as so many have pointed out, is obviously Scorsese. But the movie wants too much to be a comic movie to really reach that gritty psychological character study of a Taxi Driver, and wants too much to be a Scorsese movie to achieve the excitement and bravado of a comic book film.

A fair share of the discussion about this movie has focused on whether it's "irresponsible" or "immoral" or whatever. No doubt director Todd Phillips has very deliberately tried to elicit such reactions. In one scene, Phoenix dances around to a tune by Gary Glitter, a guy now most known for being sentenced for sexual abuse of minors and whatnot. About as calculated a ploy to generate controversy as any you could imagine. If you create some drama on twitter and in the newspapers, you sell tickets. And most fan reviews I have seen seem to choose this angle: the movie is edgy and real, and the detractors are mostly upset snowflakes. But the irony is that the movie isn't all that shocking. We've seen shock violence and characters spiraling into madness many times before. The real crime of this movie isn't that it's offensive but that it's just not that good, neither as a nuanced psychological case study nor as a comic book entertainment. A movie named 'Joker' should perhaps be funny, but the main joke seems to be that the character is unfunny. He bungles a stand-up performance -- hehe. He walks into a glass door -- hehe. He shoots people -- hehe. It does seem to have satisfied its audience, though, so perhaps I've just turned into a grumpy old man about five decades too soon.

While the movie did not make sense, it sure did make me laugh.

Ready or not(2019)
Plot: A bride's wedding night takes a sinister turn when her eccentric new in-laws force her to take part in a terrifying game.
Cast: Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O'Brien

Hard to recognize the cast but they performed brilliantly especially the lead actress. The movie had the perfect blend of horror element and humor.

Critically acclaimed for it's originality. According to wiki, authors Stephen King and R.L. Stine, as well as horror directors Guillermo del Toro and Michael Dougherty,
all tweeted their enjoyment and approval of the film.

watched it all, an empty popcorn bucket would come in handy if you had to watch for three and half hours in a theatre. They say the elderly are always repeating themselves and there was scarcely a scene in this film that didn't feel reminiscent of a prior Scorcese film. A well crafted film by an experienced craftsman, but haven't we seen enough of this topic already? Pacino as Hoffa will make you appreciate the somewhat neglected job Nicholson did with that role years ago.

This is a pretty succinct summary - pretty much mirrors mine.

Vintage movie feel with Scorcese at the helm. He is supported quite well with a stellar star cast who seem to have given their 'final act' in a sense. When are we going to see these guys work together again, really? Scorcese hasn't lost it yet. He is a magician who can still make great movies and that is that.

At 3.5 hours this movie does feel a bit long. The story has been told multiple times in multiple fashions and we have seen all of these scenes (and the background music!) in Scorcese's previous movies. In terms of novelty, this film is clearly lacking. It is still a great watch but it's just that we have seen and heard it all before.

The actors are OLD. There is no way getting past that. These guys are playing characters 20-25 years younger than their present ages which seems pretty forced. De Niro as a youngish man is unconvincing. He is a good actor but no amount of technology, make up or wigs can make a 75 year old look 45. He is more convincing once the character gets older. The same goes with Pesci. Infact Pacino at 79 actually looks younger. Go figure!

As with any gangster movies, there is blood and violence to a certain degree but nothing we haven't seen before.

All in all quite entertaining but it's all we've seen before.

Saw the 3 hourChinese film So Long, My Son

I enjoyed it as it gave insight into 1980s China up until the present day. There is a tenderness and humility to the central protagonists which kept me engaged. If you need to look at your Instagram every 20 minutes this is probably not the film for you.

I watched quite a few actually. The last one being Not Safe for Work.

I enjoyed Earthquake Bird set in 1980’s Japan. It could have been much better though.

Ready or Not was fairly entertaining. Also, Murder On The Orient Express. Rewatched The Sixth Sense.

Oh and Ad Astra. Quite rubbish. Also, The Hustle - another rubbish. Most of them I watched on the flights.

Did catch The Irishman the weekend before last.

Yeah, it's Scorsese being fixated once more on betrayals and violence of the mob – not the first thing I would think cinema was missing. But it's not another Goodfellas either. This is not so much a film about the excesses of the mob life as the dismal void that is left when the façade of that life is stripped away. More pensive and almost mournful at times. It doesn't mind lingering, and it is patient in how it plays out its themes, grand in scope, telling a certain story of America over the span of decades. And hence it is also rather long.

Probably not much to say about this that hasn't been said. The cast is obviously grand and they do make some magic. Maybe no one more than Joe Pesci? Pacino unsurprisingly walks the tightrope between the phenomenal and the comically excessive. You can just imagine Scorsese going, "Yeah, just tone it down a hint, just a hint," between takes. The film is of course wonderfully crafted at the hand of it's seasoned director as well. The de-aging didn't bother me much, though I do agree that De Niro sometimes does move like a 70-something when portraying a much younger guy (such as in one notable scene of physical violence). Some people seem to think the film fell a bit flat in its last act (last 30–45 minutes?). For me that's the that tied the overarching story together and which brought it beyond the usual territory of these the-mob-is-attractive-but-ultimately-bad stories. No glamour or badassery left at that point, just void. The shot inserted at the bottom of this poast was quite pitiful.

I will admit that the film didn't give me quite the erection it seems to have inspired in most of the critics, but there's no denying it's a kind of monument, a last hurrah of a grand old director and a generation of actors. Most film lovers will want to catch it, and I'll probably rewatch it some point down the line.

They set out to find the origin of Elsa's powers in order to save their kingdom.

Solid animated flick but not as good as the one that came before.

The soundtrack is pure 80s magic like so many of the fighting movies. Kickboxer finale still the best closely followed by Karate Kid 3.

Make movies great again. :p

Parasite seems to be doing very well. My bro also spoke highly of it.

However, i found it to be just an average thriller. It later becomes a slasher movie (like most Korean ones). I did not care for the end, but my bro says it was very good.

Maybe there is some deeper meaning to all this which I missed. Some social commentary or what not. Maybe if someone finds a good review of the movie, you could give a link here.

Just a mediocre movie at best. Nobody expects another Goodfellas but that was 100X better than this.

Strangers on a Train (1951) might not come up often as the paradigm of Hitchcock films, but in my opinion it is one of the best! The guy that plays the villain (Robert Walker) is a genious. It turns out he died not even 1 year after filming. The actor had serious mental issues, and I wonder how much of that he draws from to portray his character. Brilliant!

Some nice pre-poly tennis scenes as well. I guess the other actor, Farley Granger, actually could play tennis very well.

The leading lady (Ruth Roman) is a beauty to look at, sad she didn't achieve more success in Hollywood.

It's hard to appreciate how poignant and cruel this film is unless you re-watch the scenes where Bruno is "courting" Guy's wife at the carnival. No gore can surpass that. Hitchcock was a genious, period.

Un condamné à mort s'est échappé ou Le vent souffle où il veut, or A Man Escaped, if brevity is your cup. Directed by Robert Bresson, released in 1956. It's kinda like Prison Break, except older, more pretentious, and French, and it gets it over with in an hour and a half rather than 100 hours.

As is usually the case with Bresson, it's very sacral* and pretty and ascetic.

* Bresson doesn't really try to hide this and takes the last half of the title straight out of the Gospel of John, or l'Évangile selon Jean, which immediately sounds cooler.

Anyways I really liked Parasite. It definitely became predictable after halfway through but the humor and violence was well done and I still cared about the characters. 8/10

Knives Out - Great movie, I love these comedic mystery movies. 9/10

Frozen 2 - Kinda fell asleep somewhere in the middle of it even though I liked it. I guess a 10pm showing is not the way. Still enjoyed it 7.5/10

21 Bridges - Nothing special and everything was predictable but I was OK with it, I do like the Black Panther actor so I had a good time. 7/10

Doctor Sleep - I thought I wouldn't like it because I thought I would be confused the whole time. My friend is pissed I saw it without him because we always watch 'horror' movies together lol. I told him I am down to rewatch it but he's butthurt so it's all good. I digress, not bad I preferred the first half of the movie over the 2nd but 2nd was more relatable because it brings you back to the Shining. 8/10

Queen & Slim - Good dramatic movie. I'm always nervous going to these kinda movies because I am not black but I can relate to the crowd. My family has had moments like this, wronged by the cops so I did like the movie. Had a lot of drama and some comedy. 8/10

Dark Waters - It was long but it was good. I enjoy Ruffalo, great actor. He is pretty much the same guy he was in the other movie he made a few years back except he's not a reporter lol. 8/10

Ford vs Ferrari - Fun movie. I do love me some Christian Bale and his chemistry with Damon was fantastic. It's a shame I didn't watch it in subtitles because I had a hard time understanding some stuff Bale was saying lol. Entertaining as hell, both thumbs up. 8.5/10

Ad Astra - I watched this junk at home. Sucked. I guess I'm not bright enough to care about metaphorical crap but I wanted to see cool things happen in space. The best we got is a moon chase, which was good but everything else was a ... is that the end?? Oh ok. 5/10

I'm enjoying my Regal Unlimited. Dunno what I'm seeing tonight. I wanna see Uncut Gems but I have to go make the trip to Union Square, which isn't long but what if it's sold out? Or crappy seats???? I guess it's fine, I can have a meal while I'm there as well.

I watched it too recently and it entertained me which is more than I hoped for. Recently movies are very boring to me, I prefer tv series.

'Zulu' was on TV after quite a long absence, and it almost had me cheering for the English.

I still don't think Michael Caine did 'posh' very well in that role, although that does make his character's shift more plausible.

The Empire Strikes Back - I'm enjoying watching this from a lense that is far more critical and less precious to the way I viewed it leading into the latest trilogy. As someone who fell in love with these as a kid, it's really fun and puzzling to walk through these looking for flaws in the way many view the new movies.

Pardon me while I grab a stick to fight with someone over a flashlight. I'm a Jedi master, it's the only way.

I only watch movies to pass time, especially during the colder days where we can't really do much outside.

But make sure you watch Uncut Gems. Adam Sandler was da man. The movie had me on the edge of my seat for the entire 2hr+ :eek: 9/10
