Who do you think would capture the first clay court masters series this year?

Nadal is the odds on favourite and migh pull this one without dropping a set but he might have some stiff challenge this year from either Djokovic or Davydenko.

Got to vote for Nadal. And got to ask, how did Gulbis and Anderson make it into that poll?

I will be pulling for Roger. Not that I am a big fan (I'm actually thrilled to finally get some parody back in the sport) but I really want to see him complete his career slam. It would be a great moment.

RAFAEL NADAL

Rafa will win all the clay court tournaments (including the French Open) he plays in except Hamburg, which Federer will likely win.

Wow Gulbis and Anderson are seriously underrated over here!!

Anderson beat the best player this year and Gulbis almost knocked out Davydenko who trashed the best clay courter in this era in the final.

Why isnt Almagro on the pole? He has already won two clay tournamets this year.
Voted for Nadal.

Almagro needs to prove himself in the masters event or the slams before people start treating him as a potential winner.

Nadal I think will win Monte Carlo. It seems to be his favorite of all the Masters.

Yes, it will come down to the basic question.. can anyone handle his massive top spin. I dont think in Monte Carlo and RG anyone can since the surface suits his game perfectly. It will take some effort to bring this phenomena down.

Lets see whether Djokovic can do it :)

I like the order in the poll.

But will have to hold on to Federer for this and any event in clay, the pressure is on Nadal, not Roger.

Exactly, Federer can relax for the clay season because nobody is expecting him to win Monte Carlo, Rome or Roland Garros for that matter. Obviously people would like to see him do it, and hold all but 1 of the major events in tennis (Paris masters being the other he hasn't won). However all of the expectation and pressure is on Nadal.

He knows not only do people expect to repeat his performances of the last 3 years, but that if he does he has a very good chance of taking the number 1 spot. Not only that, if he does lose early or at all, there's a chance he might lose the number 2 spot.

The pressure is on Nadal for the clay season, so I expect that Federer might just pull off a surprise this year.

The good thing about clay courts is not every point is as meaningful as it could be on a faster surface. Both players can easily break on clay so I think that will relax Nadal more. In other words it is much easier to break and Nadal doesn't have to get all tense about not breaking enough.

I hope Federer doesn´t relax too much or he could lose the no.1 spot. The pressure was on him in the hard court season and Nadal did pretty well despite of not winning any titles.
It´s impossible that Nadal can defend all his points on clay because of the horrible schedule made by the ATP this year. If he wins RG and one of the Masters Series it´s fine for me. He has been winning everything on clay in the last 3 years. If he doesn´t win some of the Masters Series which is likely given this year´s schedule it´s not a big deal, he will be fresher for RG and Wimbledon.
Djokovic is too far away from Nadal, he can´t dream about the no.2 in the next months.

I am not in a world of panic come this clay season, than the others in terms of Roger. Nadal is the man to beat and there is no secret about that, but Roger has been written off a long time ago and I will just wait to see what he brings.

Rafa will bring what he brings all the time to any surface, all injuries aside, but the question mark revolves around Mr. Federer. I don't have anything against Rafa, just some of his fans. But the ball is in his court, and it's his time to perform. Roger despite his difficulties he did best with what he had, now I will enjoy it from the other side.

Again, I can't wait for this clay court season. :)

Yep can't wait but I'm worried about how much tennis Rafa is playing. He needs more recovery time. Is he going to play all 4 tournaments leading into the French Open again?

I have no idea, he is scheduled too play all 4 though, but I think as he get's older, Rafa is understanding his game and physical strains it takes day in and out.

I think he will play all four, but in the future he will bring that down to 3, with Hamburg or Monte Carlo  not being a MS come 2009

OK, I'll be the only one to pick Ferrer...so far...
Also hope Carlos does well here....don't forget he can take Rafa the distance on any given day ;)

Safin!!!!!

In all honesty Safin probably won't even make it past the 3rd round.

In regards to the original question I think Nadal obviously has the edge in winning Monte Carlo. I think Djokovic and Federer could give Nadal some trouble but Nadal certainly is the favorite and I don't see him having too much difficulty unless he miraculously gets injured or sick during the tournament.

come on, let's wait for the draw and then make a real thread for monte-carlo !
i'm sure the guy wanted to joke...

he only used 8 of 10 possible options for the poll... and wasted 2 more options as neither gulbis or anderson are in the entry list !

Though I agree Nadal is the CLEAR favourite, I can't help but want Federer to take his first ATP title of the year at MC.

C'mon Fed!

I would also love to see Fed take Monte Carlo for the first time in his career but realistically this one has Nadal's name written all over it.I think Nadal may lose in Rome because of the crazy shedule but he'll still be fresh in Monte Carlo.

I think Nadal will win Monte Carlo, Rome and the French Open.

Almagro will win Barcelona.

Davydenko will win Hamburg.

Safin will win Monte Carlo. That's right and you all heard it here first. When he wins, I will crow for the rest of the year and add this as my sig. ;)

Nadal is leading the poll which is hardly a surprise. What is really surprising is just two members think Davydenko has a chance to take this title?

He seems to be the real logical threat to Nadal and his dominance on clay, unless Djokovic has some other serious plans!!

Lets not forget it took Nadal almost 4 hours to beat him on clay last year (and Davydenko is a much improved player today then what he was even a year ago).

Nadal is a huge favourite, but even he could have adjustment problems. Fed, Djoko and Davydenko are waiting for him to slip up. Ferrer is an outsider.

Roddick will make it through the first round

Not surprising at all. Most people vote for who they root for or who they would bet on. Everyone would bet on Nadal, and nobody roots for Davydenko, so.. There's just some hardcore Fed and Djoko fans out there that went for their idol instead of what their head says

sorry but the poll options are pretty bad....you HAVE to include Almagro, and where the heck is Moya and Ferrero? Even Monaco and Verdasco would be better than Gulbis and Anderson

Thats because none of them have much of a chance to get to the semis.

That's not entirely true. Ferrero, who actually plays real good at Monte Carlo, reached the SFs last year, while Moya reached the SFs at Hamburg.

These guys can still cause upsets and go deep into the tournament.

I'm liking Rafael for this title now Tsonga is out. I think Federer,Djokovic and Davydenko have an outside chance. I think Nalbandian will do well and so will Gasquet.

Like Tsonga was ever a threat to Nadal on clay, last time they met he lost to him on hardcourts which is Nadal worst surface by far.He is a threat to Nadal at Wimbledon if they meet and at Montreal,Cincinnati,USO,definitely not on clay.

Ferrero may not get beyond the first round and, if he does, he has to face Ancic and/or Nadal in 3d round. Moya has Djokovic, Murray and Gasquet ahead of him. Thats very tough. But... we will see.
