Who's Your Clay Favorite In Place of Fed?

Well since Federer won't make it, I hear that this guy, Nadal, has a pretty decent clay court game. Maybe him.

Thiem might do ok as well.

As a Fed Fan part of me wants ...

- Wawrinka cause he's got a real shot
- Jack Sock cause he's the American with the best shot
- Thiem cause he's the young gun with a OHBH
- Cuevas cause he's the specialist underdog
- AND YES ... Nadal cause I've so much respect for him and wouldn't mind him getting one more

Its Stanimal then. I know you like him.o_O

I'm with metsman on this--Nadal, Stan, Del Potro seem like good choices. If a younger generation player wins the FO the way you keep trying to convince us they will, I think I would faint from shock.

I'll tell you what I don't want to see and that's a Murray-Djokovic final. I'm sick to death of those.

Will root for Stan and Thiem. Motto: hit the ball hard.

However, I wouldn't put it past Djokovic to beat Nadal and win the tournament. He was starting to raise his level and compete with Nadal at the end of the last match they played. With two weeks to go until the French and maybe getting through a couple of early rounds there, he might improve enough to get back to very good form.

Where's your poll ?
This is a thread for disillusioned Fed fans who now have no one to watch on clay. No poll. As a Nadal fan and myself as a Thiem fan we already have our favorite, so a poll would just allow us to inflate the numbers. If you're a Fed fan first then just say who your favorite player on class is now. This is not the same thing as picking the favorite to win on clay.

If Thiem were gone, I think my favorite might be Pouille (Goffin as backup.):p

I'd like to see a first-time slam winner: Overall, I'm behind Thiem (figuratively, alas not literally), followed by Dimitrov, Goffin and Coric, maybe Sock or Querrey for the American factor. On the sentimental side, I might go with Tsonga, finally winning one (and at home). If I had to pick a past slam winner, I'd vote for Del Potro. It would be a great comeback story.

Of course, I don't see much chance for that. I think it would take Novak, Andy or Stan shockingly finding their best form, which is miles off right now for all of them, to pull off an upset against Nadal since it's feeling like an inevitable dull march toward yet another clay title for Rafa. If all these players went out early, it would make it a much more interesting tournament to watch.

It's also looking pretty unwatchable on the women's side without the Sharapova drama factor, though Venus making a run with her sister out would make for a nice story.

All in all, it's shaping up to be one of the most boring and predictable slams in recent years after the excitement and surprise of the Australian Open. Hey, at least it will be fun trying to guess which third-tier player is going to take Murray out.

Why would Fed fans be against Stan ???

Murray and Joker ain't doing too well so we can leave them out.

I thought I'd already explained? Fed fans wouldn't want to see Stan with 2 RGs? But of course, if Stan beat any of Nadal or Djokovic, then I am sure they'd be ecstatic.

Stan I guess. 1HBH'ers unite! :)

In all honesty though, if Nadal gets #10 I'll be happy for him. I don't usually say someone deserves something until they've won it, but if there's any guy deserving of 10 titles at a single slam it's Nadal at RG.

Those should be outlawed for sanity's sake. It only took one of those in 2016 for me to want to claw my eyeballs out.

With Fedal back at the helm you really do realize how dreadful those Murray-Djokovic matches were or at least that's my opinion.

Yeah, coz last year's Rome final was so so terribly terribly boring blah blah blah!

Please give it a rest with this hoary old cliché. It's taken on a life of its own and gets ludicrously exaggerated with each telling!!o_O

Sorry, it's how I feel. Of course it's always better if all Big Four members are playing well at the same time and competing well against each other but I for one got sick and tired of Murrovic finals in the past two years with a very one-sided conclusion and you are basically watching two very similar defensive-minded players.

Go watch Murrovic on YouTube if that floats your boat and let us say that match-up is boring if we want to. Right now, Federer and Nadal are at the helm and I am enjoying it for however long it lasts for.

This is a great post and pretty much nails who I will be supporting myself (maybe the only difference being switch out Cuevas for Nishikori).

I want to see what Stan and Fognini could do at the FO. Their games, especially on a red dirt, are joy to watch and their level can be extremely high, making them dangerous for any player on tour. The problem is and has always been in their focus/minds.

Stan since he will start kicking ass as soon as he takes the "special stuff" he takes before every slam.

Why is that so ?
I certainly would love to see Stan with more slams, even 2 RG's or 9 Wimbledons.
Fed fans don't necessarily have to be just Fed fans.

I was a fan of other players in the 80s and 90s.

wawrinka, because im afraid that losing in RG will drive him so far into the darkness that he will come out and blow everyone including fed to the tittle in wimbledon

The theory was Warinka wins every 5th slam, but he failed to win Wimby last year and waited 6 slams to win again. Wimby 2018 is the next logical Stanimal sighting in 7, so he can go down in flames at both events in 2017.:p

I just feel that all this criticism of Murrovic finals is overblown and becoming a self-fulfilling cliché. There have been plenty of good finals between them if you only choose to look for them.

THE favourite should of course be Nadal - whether you're a fan of his or no.
Anyone still kidding him/herself telling that he's 'far from his best' or other likewise nuttery I've been reading over here ever since AO 2017, should've woken up by now.

As for my personal favs, The Great Underdogs, aka Also Ran's, aka 'Expendable characters', there's JMDP, Thiem, Wawa and Goffin - although the latter appears to have drawn an injury in Rome. :(

I like Thiem, guess I'm rooting for him. Pitty this claybeast turns into a cub whenever Nadal is at the other side of the net.

I'd like to root for Wawrinka, but he's always out of the tournament before I even realize it started.

Its Thiem cc.:D Perfect complement to Fed as he's little threat on hard courts. The Thiem train may leave you behind in Rome:
