Will Roger be year end number 5?

Ferrer is never going to outperform Federer at the WTF, in the worst possible scenario for Federer both will lose in the RR stage.

Basically, if Ferrer is to advance to the semi-finals of the WTF he'll have to beat 2 of the Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray group. He's more likely to lose all 3 RR matches than advance further.

Just to be clear here... Mustard is absolutely correct about the year end ranking system. Federer won the WTF last year and must defend the winners points. Anything less than winning the WTF and Federer is losing points (toward the year end ranking). He also won in Switzerland, semi-final in Paris... alot more points to defend than Ferrer.

Ferrer's results from last year weren't as impressive and thus has a better chance of gainning points. It's very possible that Fed's ranking points total could go down and Ferrer's could go up... Thus giving the net increase to Ferrer (toward the year end ranking)

I agree with you that the WTF is a tough bet for Ferrer to out perform Federer (thus he is unlikely to gain points on Fed there)

Ferrer is a great player and I agree with all of the attributes you have talked about re Ferrer above, but Ferrer is a level below the top 4 players IMO. Ferrer can beat anybody consistently but that does not seem to be the case with the players ranked above him. There are the top four and then there are the next tier of players.

Agree with this but a reminder of what Ferrer did to Murray at this years Australian Open Semi final.
Murray won in a gruelling 4 setter, with Ferrer winning the first set and Murray winning the next 3 needing 2 tie breaks in the process!
The match was a war of attrition with countless energy sapping rallies and a major reason why Murray was lack lustre in the final.
I'm sure Murray made a statement after this match saying he wasn't sure how much he'd have left for the final, the first time I ever heard him talk pessimistically like that about a future match.

Really, I don't think Murray is that much of an unfit wimp. He had an easy run in his first 4 matches at the AO, never losing more than 3 games in a set.
I would like to see his quote about being tired.

ATM, Ferrer is almost 900 points behind Fed at the year-end race.

Next tournament for both is in two weeks, where Fed can add 500 points if he wins Basel whereas Ferrer can only add 320 points to his total if he wins Valencia. It's likely Ferrer wins it, but it's even more likely that Fed reaches at least the final in Basel. So, basically the positions should stay the same after that week.

Next is Bercy for both of them. Best result for David there is QF. David needs a miracle to happen and his first Masters 1000 win to get ahead of Fed by a couple 100 points.

Remains WTF. Depends on the draw, but once again Ferrer outdoing Fed here seems unlikely.

DC final is a non-factor. David would need two live rubber wins just to add 20 points to his total.

So no, baring injury, I don't see how Fed could end the year number 5.

The idea of Ferrer outperforming Federer at the WTF, even today, is comical, let alone significantly so. I guess at this time of year people are bored for useless topics though.

It was an interview right after the Ferrer match.
He definitely said he wasn't sure how he'd be for the final.
Never heard him speak like that before.

I do think Murray has inherent physical issues with 5 set tournaments.
Maybe not fitness but his joints seem to seize up and become painful at the latter stages.
You always see him grabbing his hips, thighs and knees.
I'm not sure if his body is designed to take the physical demands required in a Slam.
Suspected this for a long time now.
Watch what happens at Australia in a few months.
Come the semis he just seems to hit a wall.
I think it's more than a mental issue.

People don't understand how important year-end ranking is. The year-end ranking is like your total exam score. You may have done well in the first part or second part, but it is the total score that really counts. In this case, the total score is the same as the year-end ranking. It's the ranking that takes into account of the whole year's performances of tennis players.

As of Oct /2011 Federer is #4, and I really don;t think he's bothered one bit by it. His goal right now is to win an Olympic Gold Medal in mixed doubles and he appears to have Hingis on board for this. I feel that the dream of a singles gold is getting further and further out of his reach.

Federer has pretty well been there, done that in tennis. He has a family and a settled life and if more titles happen, good. If not he is one of the GOATS and will always be.

I tend to agree. He's made no move to defend any of his post USO ranking points to try and protect his ranking. He's not in Stockholm this week to defend his title there so he will drop another 250 points next week and the gap will widen. Two of his remaining three scheduled tournaments are title defences (Basel and the WTF) so he can only gain points now by getting to the final of Paris and preferably winning it.

True enough.

Federer could be kind of tires both menatlly and phisically. The Tour is pretty demanding. I think he will hold to number three for some time though.

what matters is federina knows he played the worst players in the years 2004 through 2007.

She did have to face shoulder-busted Safin and middle-schooler Nadal, and even those matches didn't always work out for federina in that vacuum era.

I'd rather Roger tank (Quarters and semis) the rest of the year, and come back next year with minimal points to defend.

At the WTF Ferrer might get 200 points if he's lucky, but most likely he won't get any just like last year. Fed will probably get to at least SF
