Halep also did not make a slam final after her sixth slam appearance. How long has Halep been on tour again? ;)

I find Halep unappealing in every way and think she is way overrated. I will bet you right now that Bouchard will have more success than Halep will at the end of the day.

Plus, Bouchard just blew Halep off the court too. Halep sucks vs the more powerful players.

Halep rolled her ankle. Plus, her game isn't really made for grass. Halep would school Bouchard on clay or slow HC IMO.

Oh please, no excuses. She was moving just fine.

We will see about that in the future. I would say probably not.

The ankle roll affected her serve and her BH DTL. It's not an excuse, it's a fact.

I don't believe it is a fact and she still would not have defeated Bouchard either way. Halep can't win to save her life vs the power players.

Oh please! Head case Kvitova? If Kvitova has her head screwed on straight and has more than three brain cells operating, Halep would not have a chance.

You said "Halep can't win to save her life vs the power players". You didn't mention they couldn't be headcases who are also double Wimbledon champions.

Dude..it's obvious justin bieber is a jerk with a drug habit. He has been busted with weed, codeine and god knows his hangers on aren't mormons. So yeah I'd call into question anyone who thinks it's a good idea to hang with justin bieber.

This is the same waste of space that said Anne Frank would be a "belieber". I mean really??

I am too old to understand popularity of bieber, but a lot of musicians and "stars" of rock/pop music had/have drug habit and millions of teenage girls had/have a crush on them.

They tend to grow out of it. Why Bouchard should be any different? A lot of youngsters do/say things they might regret later with the difference being that it is not reported and discussed in the media (including TT)

Last time I checked Halep went from being #74 to world # 3 and I believe would still be ahead of Bouchard even after this result - yet I don see a 'Halep Hoopla'

Because Halep has not got the looks, does not speak good enough English and is from the wrong country i.e. poor and not relevant to tennis industry in marketing terms.

Only one of this impediments (English) can be fixed by Halep and her team.

Yes, and considering several top players lost early. It's kind of ridiculous and premature to make such a prediction.

True; it is one title--and one must ask if she was that "on" (as Shriver implies), then she would have been well on her way to that number after her 1st major--where her game was not much different than what was witnessed yesterday.

But there rests the double standard: some performing emotional cartwheels defending Kvitova, yet some of the same attacked a player with a better majors record as noted on Saturday:

Moreover, a player such as Azarenka actually defended her AO titles, and was in back to back USO finals (Kvitova has only been in two majors finals), but has received a boatload of criticism of her skills and place in the game--more than Kvitova today.

While true, considering the wave of open-faced hatred of Bouchard the moment she mentioned Bieber, it all stinks of jealousy. Certain tennis fans painted an idealized portrait of "pre-Bieber" Bouchard--probably fantasizing that they had a chance with her (as delusional as such a thought would be), but her personal choice shattered that fantasy, thus the hatred rolled in, and continues to this day, which is apparent, as they try to slam her at the very moment she is rising in her career--in rapid fashion.

There is no coincidence to be found in this case; Bouchard likes Bieber, so the former "fans" turn on her.

Bouchard is not a power player, and she herself can not win to save her life when she has to face a power player

I really like Halep, but in ability terms I think EB probably has a little more upside due to her height and more aggressive play. Who knows though, Halep has a ton of talent.

Eugenie KNOWS there is still a gap between herself and the top five ladies. Petra proved a lot with the victory she is now an elite player with two slam titles. Very few women on the WTA are multiple slam winners. For Eugenie she needs to get physically stronger and add more variety to the serve and game. Nick Saviano he gave Eugenie POOR tactics she needed to move back to return Petra's huge serve. Eugenie also needs to learn to BLOCK back huge serves. The lack of variety in Eugenie's game needs to improve. Bouchard is talented but to beat the top five ladies she needs more power, pace, ability to absorb pace and variety.

Great post. When he said that after the first game, I was stunned. She definitely should have moved back, regardless of what Nick said. The ball was coming too fast and too deep, there was no way she was going to get those balls back.

I didn't realize she was 5"10. She looks much shorter on TV. At any rate this is a great breakout year for her, with possibly a lot of upside.

Again, what an ignorant statement. How can you state something like this as fact when she's only about a year and a bit into her WTA career?? That would have been like making a judgement on Federer before he finally won his first Slam at 22 years of age and went on to win 16 more. Some people probably did and look like complete imbeciles now.

You, like so many other faux tennis experts watch a bit of a player and jump to conclusions. Nobody can take you seriously when you carry yourself like this. In fact, I think I remember someone else commenting on Bouchard struggling against power players. You obviously just latched on to that like a real poser.

I don't think she's earned the hype and the notion that she could be the next marketing sensation based on three semis this year is ludicrous. To earn that kind of distinction, it should be solidified with major wins.

This is exactly the position that Sloane Stephens was in last year. So many times the media snuffs out these prospects chances before they get the opportunity to prove that they're the real deal.

We don't know how Genie will deal with this loss, or what will happen if she doesn't either win or make another final. It's happened before.

It also doesn't seem right to over hype her over Halep, who has done more, IMO.

The western media REALLY want a young female champion to step up since women tennis is in transition. Serena is on the decline, Sharapova is already twenty seven so the WTA and the media gravitate to someone young and new. I am proud of Eugenie Bouchard she has had a breakthrough year. Unlike Sloane Stephens, Eugenie results at the regular WTA events are better! Bouchard has already won a WTA title made some Qfinals and semifinals of other WTA tour events. Bouchard just needs to keep working hard unlike the other young players I see Bouchard as being very focused! Bouchard wants to be a champion badly she really has the fire for it. I feel though Eugenie needs to improve her second serve and add variety in her game.

I agree.

First and foremost she needs some big wins. I don't remember her having any.

This comment is fair despite the criticism of Sloane Stephens she has done something Halep and Bouchard have not done. Stephens has beaten both Serena and Sharapova and people can make excuses BUT the fact is Sloane has done it. If Bouchard and Halep want to win slams they MUST beat the best players. Right now on the WTA Serena and Sharapova are still above the rest to earn respect to prove they can REALLY contend Halep and Bouchard MUST beat Serena or Maria. Victoria Azarenka is coming back from injury she is also an elite player but in terms of name recognition she is below Maria and Serena. Sloane Stephens despite her inconsistency has proven she can beat the best players. Sloane needs to get motivated she needs to find a way to win small WTA events and move up. If Stephens gets the consistency I feel she has more upside than Halep and Bouchard in terms of talent.

True, although sometimes I think they interfere with a player's progress by heaping excessive expectations on them.

Good post. It will be interesting to see what happens. At any rate, at least there are some stars in waiting. It's good for the game. Sloane seems a bit on the downside. Do you think she'll regroup and get it together?
