Once the great American hope, Young quickly became the great American hype and, eventually, an American embarrassment. Not counting Istomin's retirement today, Young is 1-6 at Wimbledon and 0-3 in Wimbledon qualifying.

Since 2012, Young is one of the few players with a worse Wimbledon record than Nadal. Not even I give him much of a chance. But Rosol didn't have much of a chance either. Neither did Darcis. And, hell, even Kyrgios' own mother didn't think he could win.

But they all did. So maybe Donald Young can summon some American spirit for once and rid us of the vulture the way Donald Trump rid us of Hillary. Stranger things have happened.

Young might get a break or two, push to a tiebreaker. But it should be fairly smooth for Nadal. I believe Young played a strong second set against Djokovic last week at Eastbourne so maybe he's got some fight in him. But looking at history, Nadal seems to have had a lot of very difficult matches at Wimbledon even in winning against lower ranked players like Haase, Petzschener, etc. So who knows? It's not like Nadal is a young kid with fresh legs.

Rafa just to strong a hitter for The Donald! Not only does he hit a heavy ball but has all sort of spin to it too. Not only that; he just as fast as The Donald or faster! He has tons more experience and has won it twice already. Rafa serve is better too. All in all; The Donald just got a bad draw!

As talentless as he is, there is no way Young does worse than Millman, who is 0-2 on the year and didn't even look like a pro player today.
Young has had a pretty good year. Yet prospects are very bleak indeed. Should be entertaining with two leftys though.

Your buddy and fellow Aussie southpaw Tony scared the fair dinkum out of you as you were two matches away from the CYGS in '69. He was Coq Roche after that 22-20 second set you won, not wanting to die until the fifth set. Even made you tank a breadstick fourth set!

He was a worthy opponent. Even still, you have to make it exciting for the fans. I wanted to do a number on fedr in our warm up but that would shatter the lies told on this forum.

I think Young can be quite tricky this time and this match will be a very good test to see how far Nadal will go in this Wimby. If Nadal blows Young away, he's going to march to the final at a canter.

Will be interesting. But fairly confident Nadal will pull through here, even though DY has been playing good lately. But he's too erratic.

Lets hope I'm right.

This one will be harder, Young is actually pretty good when on, only problem is that I've never even seen him be on for a full set. Rafa won't be aggresive, will be similar to Monfils at the AO this year. Rafa in 3, 6-2 7-6 6-3

I thought Kyrgios had a chance going into the 2014 match, so I'm not sure why his mother did not.
I bet on Kyrgios and got 13 times my money back iirc. Easy to see the potential upset there imo so of course his mother did too

As to the OP, don't see the point of this thread really. DY is probably the opponent Rafa would pick himself if he could chose to play any player in the 2nd round. Absolutely no f******k chance

Didn't Nadal have all these superior attributes over many of the guys he lost to at Wimbledon in the past? We're in an interesting era now where players in their 30s are winning the Slams. But who knows how long it will last? The top players are getting more injured nowadays due to their aging bodies. Federer's already had knee surgery and back issues. Nadal's had knee, back and wrist injuries. Djokovic has had shoulder and wrist issues. Murray is playing hurt this season and has a hip injury. They're all over 30. Any of them can be taken at anytime if a hot player shows up. It's happened many times before to all of them.

Yeah, the longer Nadal stays in the tournament the harder he'll be to beat.
We need some awesome 5 set epic battles ala Australian Open. Federer and Nadal were spoiling fans with the numerous 5 setters they were producing. Nadal/Zverev, Nadal/Dimitrov, Federer/Stanimal, Federer/Nishikori, Nadal/Federer....

Like Trump vs Hillary..? So basically Young also needs to betray his country and get some Russians aboard? Sounds like it's gonna be a crazy match for sure.

Donald's career has stabilized and he's had a good grass-court season - but "good" for a journeyman pro; not necessarily "good" for the likes of someone like Nadal. I just don't see what DY has to bother Rafa enough to earn a win. The lefty serve can be somewhat troublesome, but enough to seriously and consistently bother Rafa? He's a good mover and has very good hands, but will that be enough to win the match, or even a set? And, this isn't "slump" Rafa of prior years. Rafa's playing well and his weapons seem to be firing.

An upset would be stunning, and I hope it's a competitive match, but I can't vote against Rafa in this situation. I'd tell DY to take the Dustin Brown approach and just go balls to the wall aggressive, but he doesn't necessarily have the huge serve to use as foundation for such a strategy. Win or lose, I think he'll come forward a lot, which he should, since he's not going to out-rally Nadal, even on grass.

The betting odds for Donald vs. Hillary were similar to the betting odds for Donald vs. Nadal.

Actually, Young is a bit more of an underdog. But sometimes an underdog just can't help but make something great again.

The reason this will be tough for Nadal is because Young is left handed. That makes the biggest difference in the match I think. If young doesn't serve well then Rafa should take this comfortably. Youngs backhand is relatively weak so if they get in a lot of backhand to backhand WV's hanged you'd expect Rafa to be on top. You have forehand isn't too bad though so he'll play his part in this match.
