Now that players are playing the same style on hard and clay, does the surface matter any longer?

I don't want to prejudice the poll but nobody listens to me anyway so I'd say clay. There really isn't a huge difference between hard and clay matches except that serve is returned a little deeper and servebots like Isner and Querrey have more trouble winning matches. So I'd like to see Miami go to clay. Plus there are more drop shots.

Personally:

Medium fast/fast HC such as 04-09 USO, 06-08 Shanghai YEC, Cincy > grass > Federer in full flight on clay > medium HC > clay >>>>> slow HC

I live in NA so the majority of courts we have here are outdoor HC's with some indoor. We unfortunately don't have as much clay and/or grass courts over here but my game definitely favors HCs anyways since I'm a baseliner.

Clay, hard and least interesting is grass - Sound of the ball and when racket hits the ball is weird to me...

LOL. So how long do you think Emery is going to last?

23 years. ;):D

Don’t think he’ll last too long, he’s more of a short term manager I think.

One of the options in the poll is not a real tennis surface according to the ITF

I vote grass followed by indoor hard

Carpet would have been #1 but cannot vote as no official world tour events are played on it

Medium/fast the Shanghai indoor hard courts? You mean ultra-fast. Now seriously, if the Shanghai Masters Cup 2007 was not fast then nothing is fast. Come on. Which other surface was faster than Shanghai MC in 2007?

That’s what I meant with /fast. Not sure if there’s a court pace index from anywhere but I used to love watching matches on that surface.

Wish they would bring it back instead of the dead London 02 surface.

Grass seems to get a lot of love but it would be boring after a while. It would be Karlovic, Raonic, Querrey etc all the time.

Indoor HC, tennis in the 21st century you could say.

I would love to play indoor, its cool with no wind of sun. Humidity isnt 85% making the ball heavy

As a clean freak I hate playing on clay.
Fast HC all the way.

Some people are responding with their favorite surface to play on, not to watch on TV. They can be different.
I prefer to watch hardcourt, it’s easier to see the ball.
I prefer to play on clay.
I have never stepped on a tennis grass court in all my life. I doubt I could ever do that, even less play on it.

Favourite surface to play on? Haven’t got much to go off.

Asphalt
Hard court
Artificial grass
Clay (on holiday once)

I liked the hard court best. Consistent bounce, not too high.

My favorite tennis to watch is grass-court tennis(old school here) but the best surface for watching tennis on tv is hardcourt. It's the easiest to see the ball. Clay is almost impossible.

In order of which surface I like to watch
1) Fast Hard
2) Grass and Indoor HC
3) Clay
4) Slow Hard
Clay and slow HC have switched positions recently for me , Clay is more likeable in recent times.

My main problem was the Dark Orange background where i was unable to watch the ball. I still can't watch Clay Tennis on my Old Box TV. Gladly I solved that problem by watching Online HD on my computer:).

Slow HC is dull and boring. Consistent bounce ( not high like clay) and slow court speed turns rallies very boring especially if the ball is not gripping on surface. It has nothing to offer...Slice doesn't skids the way it does on grass, less winners from Baseline, No variable bounce (depending upon topspin on ball) to offer like clay does, Basically just waist high sit-ups, same kind of boring tennis in all sets

You disappoint me, but a couple of people in the household would have been very happy with that approach, if I were to take it up ( for the same reasons).

From your words I take it it was your choice to play on HC and not because clay courts were (relatively) unavailable?

HC is my least preferred surface. I prefer grass/clay, but rarely play on grass.

There are some clay courts around my city and I've only used them once or twice. But yes, it's definitely easier to find fast hard courts too.

Indoor clay.

While playing indoors sounds cool, I consider tennis to be an outdoors sport. I understand them having to play indoors in the winter, but playing outdoors is so much better. My happiest memories of playing tennis were on the clay courts of Glion and Caux in Switzerland, right above lake Geneva.
