Zverev settles his account with Lendl

Legend
Before the upcoming tournament Zverev gave an interview in Hamburg in which he talked about Lendl:

https://www.spiegel.de/sport/sonst/...erden-sich-viele-dinge-aendern-a-1277986.html

I translate literally what Zverev said:

"Sometimes we go to the practice court. I practice for 2 hours, and half an hour of that time he just stands with his back to the court and talks with someone about how he played golf that morning. Also he has a new dog and spends very much time with it. After Wimbledon we had a clarifying conversation. I clearly demanded from him to better focus on tennis from now on."

Finally he was asked if Lendl has a future in his team. He answered cryptically: "Many things will change"

---

It’s quite typical for Zverev that he talks negatively about other people in public, and IMO that is bad style. The only excuse would be if he repeatedly tried to talk about it personally with Lendl and he never really reacted. But even then he could just have fired him and moved on. I think it’s no coincidence that he has trouble with anyone, be it with Ferrero some time ago or his manager. And always they went after each other verbally when the relationship was done, and both sides told the story completely different and accused the other one of lying.

That said, I have a feeling that Lendl is massively overrated as a coach, but that shouldn’t be the main concern here.

can you blame ivan for being ZZZed by the letsgoyelling Ziraffe, as everybody else ?

and... could Z consider the remote(?) possibility that he might be boring ?

Lendl seems disinterested

The entire world is disinterested in Zverev, nothing new there.

Lendl is not going to coach a "loser," and I predicted he'd dump the brat's ass after Wimbledon. I'm sure this is just Zverev trying to pretend he fired Ivan, when Lendl almost surely walked away from someone who's not winning events, much less majors. It's typical of Z to publicly dump on an ATG who had had won 21 ATP events when he was a comparable age to Zverev (22), as well as Davis Cup for Czechoslovakia. Unbelievable, typical arrogance from this guy.

Lendl seems disinterested

disrespectful of him IMO

He's getting paid to do a job and he's talking about playing golf???

Lendl is probably figuring he's wasting his time with this kid! I don't think Sascha's overrated, but he's woefully underachieving due to expectations! Lendl did give him something to strive for in trying to overcome his mental deficiencies, but it's obvious it just didn't work out! Sometimes you have to cut bait and move on; other stars having the same problem! It's just headline news due to early upsets of Zverev in majors! He should at least be able to get out of the 1st or 2nd round against qualifiers and wildcards! He's beaten the Big 3 on different occasions so the skill's there, just not the mind! :cautious: ;)

What's additionally hilarious is that Zverev is playing on clay in Hamburg next week instead of getting ready for HC and the USO. And then this Bozo has the freakin' gall to attack Ivan?

Being German, what choice does he have? It would be a huge slap in the face to all concerned who's supported him from a pup! Even Djokovic played the Serbia Open when he probably should have been resting for Madrid, Rome, and Paris! :cautious:  ;)

And even had I been a fan of Zedrot (which I never, ever, ever was), once he criticized Lendl, he's dead to me.

can I ask, what made you such a big fan of Lendl? and would you have rooted for him over Fed had they been playing in the same era?

The brat even had more invective for Ivan:

"Lendl's got a new dog, which is two months old. He shows him how to be potty trained. That's really his main theme: golf and his little dog. It doesn't mean that I can no longer work with him, and I told him that after Wimbledon. I have problems with my second serve, so we train the second serve and 20 minutes of it is boring, then he tells how he has made an incredible impact on the 6th hole in golf."

Sasha needs Larry Stepanki. He is the BEST of the BEST in coaching. Hire larry and also add Darren Cahill to his as needed team or consultant team. Then and ONLY then he will win a major.

He’s playing Hamburg instead of defending his back-to-back Washington titles. The reason for the change is not nationalistic loyalty...it’s appearance money that D.C. wasn’t willing to match.

I can't answer whether I would have rooted for Fed over Lendl had they been in the same era. I just don't know. Had they both been born in 1960 and come into prominence at the exact time, I probably would have gone for Fed-- a much lovelier game and a much nicer human being.

I loved Lendl from the time I was 5 years old and first saw him play on TV. I hated McEnroe and Connors, thought they were just bratty egos and I felt he could eventually supplant them. I liked that he was hated and he just didn't give two f's about that, he just got down to business. He never sucked up, kissed ass, liked reporters or did P.R. stuff. I just loved his authenticity. However, in person, he was a complete tool, I saw him often enough in exo's and in practice. Still love him though!

idk, if Lendl is really like this, its hard to be critical of Zed although im sure hes not perfect either

the problem is that future coaches will be put off by this sort of unwanted public attention hes putting his current coach under and they're less likely to work with him

can you imagine signing up to coach Alex and hes not happy with you so he takes to the media to drag you through the mud?

2 hours? There's his problem. I practice for 2 hours and I'm a middle-of-the-road 4.5. When I was in high school, I practiced 4+ hours many days.

Well we all know it comes down to $$ for most players; even Fed, but it's still something AZ has to consider! I can't imagine an "up & comer" blowing off "home advantage" with or w/o added incentive of appearance $$! :censored:  :cautious: ;) :)

I actually am going to take Sascha's side on this one (And that pains me to say it).

Lendl knew all about the Sascha hype before he agreed to coach him. This wasn't like the kid just entered the top 100 and was an up and comer.

If what Zverev said was true about Lendl half-assing the coaching, then Lendl shouldn't be offended and if anything should have been out of the picture long ago. I know Lendl golfs a lot where he lives (Hilton Head). He split with Murray the first time because his daughter was a collegiate golfer.

As a coach on tour myself, I always am examining myself to see if I could be doing more to help my player(s). Lendl probably is so established at this point that he probably doesn't feel the need to reevaluate himself as a coach as he thinks he's doing Zverev a favor by even being there.

Placid, disinterested-seeming legend and haughty brat that likes to air out his dirt laundry get paired up.

Wut could go wrong?

Seriously though, even if Lendl was slacking, there’s no real way to prove it and future high profile coaches will be on alert and probably balk at any offers to coach this short-sighted giraffe boy.

I know we all make fun of Boris the Bankrupt, but when he coached Novak I don't think anyone ever questioned his commitment to Novak. He was at pretty much every big tournament and he always looked passionate in Novak's box.

Boris really needed the WORK though! The incentive to succeed was evident on both sides! It was shaky early on where Nole didn't win much of anything with Becker on the team! Even when he did pull off a victory, Boris wasn't there; I believe in the hospital repairing something back in 2014! If not for that Wimbledon victory, Becker may have been out of a job that summer! Instead it all turned around for "his charge" going on to take a few more majors before being dismissed a couple years ago and Vajda rejoining the team! I personally think the "MRS" decided Becker was a bad influence and told Nole to let him go! :sneaky:   :)

Ha ha, I will be honest and say given your Fog obsession I didn't think too highly of your taste ..But knowing you are a Lendl fan, I now have newfound respect... :)
Lendl was badass and though I barely got to watch him , I surely held a soft corner for him because he always said nice things about Edberg and also that he (Edberg) was the only one who shared his sick sense of humor. I hated that they met in the semis instead of finals on a couple of occasions...kind of like Fedovic meeting in the semis while Becker would pull a Nadal in the other half.

Just three of them! LOL Murray doesn't belong imho! Its like if back in the day, when they were doing this commercial they added Yannick Noah or Vitas Gerulaitis for some weird reason as fourth member!

Wilander looks somewhat like Fed there..
I can't have anyone but Murray replacing Lendl (I have come across childhood pics of Lendl where he resembles a young Murray)
And Djoko once wore a JMac wig and that image has stayed in my mind...

that is the only reason I picked these three..

I’m sure firing the guy that got much maligned Andy to his best peaks will make Zev stop failing at slams.

You hire Ivan to analyze ur game, tell you what’s wrong, tell you what to work on, get ur mind right for big matches. You don’t hire him to watch every single practice ball ffs.

It's too bad that Lendl only won 8 majors, 94 titles, and spend 270 weeks at #1(the record when he retired). And then, he coached Murray to 3 slam titles, world #1, and a WTF title.

What the heck does a legend like Lendl know about winning that Zverev doesn't?

Instead, maybe Lendl should have hired Zverev to be his life coach.

Their partnership started 2014 AO I believe and yeah it wasn't all roses in the beginning.

But you definitely noticed the effect Becker did have on Novak's game and mentality. And it was definitely evident in 2015-first half of 2016 when Novak was winning damn near everything. Once Novak started winning everything, I can only recall a small handful of times that Boris was not at a Masters 1000 or slam.
