I think Nole will need to improve his net game and somehow bring back his 2007 aggressiveness.The Fedfan in me says the tour is just fine as it isBut the tennis fan says the tour is missing a spark right now. I'm sure Djokovic will be back playing some incredible ball in 2018, mentally and physically he'll be refreshed.

Nadal took most of 2012 off and then we know what he did in 2013. Fed took a lot of 2016 off and we can all see what he's doing now.
If I were a gambling man, which of course I'm not cause I don't want to throw money away. But I would seriously consider putting some on Novak winning AO and another slam in 2018.
I mean "rest" is what get's you in prime condition for winning slams, not "match play" and "form".

I don't think so. Federer probably won't play RG next year either, and winning all four when you're only playing three is really a tough ask, even for him...

Both are needed, but these guys are so good (we are talking about ATG in fact) that without a lot of match time he can get to a high tennis level. Let's see in 2018

That's if he doesn't have the same athletic ability. I think working with Agassi they'll be aiming to take the ball early and be aggressive. Novak's game has always been about insane ground game, in 2015-2016 he did attack the net as much as any other top player - I don't think we'll see him do much more than that. He needs his 2015 serve back most of all.

I know how you're feeling man. But to judge by Federer's break, glorius things may wait in 2018. I think Djokovic has taken the right decision, he is still not old.

That depends what on shape his game is in when he comes back. I'm not assuming anything. He's not going to start S&V'ing. I expect him to play with more aggression off the ground again, he'll still move better than most of the tour even if his movement declines over his break.

Not sure. In 2014-2016 most tennis fans dreamed about him taking a break. There was no reason to watch tournaments, you just knew who was going to win. This year it's not much different of course, now Federer is winning every big tournament he enters. Weak era starting from 2014...

He is saying he wants to play 5 more years. Means he will come back with new batteries. Fedal came back stronger than ever and so will Novak. Better he come back strong and winning slams again that being half good.
Its probably boring without the fav playing, but there is a lot of other fun and young players to cheer for in the meanwhile

He was good enough at net last year to Clean up and win 2 majors and Dominate. So his netgame is very capable.....it is not a weakness. but he does suck in Doubles netgame. he just gets lost with Positioning in doubles because he plays so little of it.I hope so. He's really awkward at the net.

At least you can now sit back and enjoy watching the rest of the guys slug it out for the remainder of the season (just like Fedfans did last year) while waiting patiently for his return in 2018. Do you have anybody you will sets your sights on in the meantime eg. Prince Dominic or Prince Sasha for instance?

I think he made the right decision. No point to keep playing if you're hurting and can't give your best, all you're doing is extending your misery and then you have to deal with the press/pressure every time you don't perform up to the insane expectations people have on the big 4.
If it leads to Novak returning next year in great form and allows him to resume his legendary rivalries, I'm all for it.

That's the crux of it right there. After 30, he simply cannot continue to grind away at the back of the court and play 30 shot rallies. This is where Agassi won't help him at all since Andre's volleys were pretty painful. Whether Novak can actually become a more aggressive player and end points quicker is a big "if." Boris would be the better coach in the last stage of his career.

Well, it was what most of us had been anticipating so no great surprise there. As they get older, the top players can't keep up the same level of play as consistently as they used to. They start to need breaks to let their bodies recover. Federer and Nadal were forced to do that last year and it paid amazing dividends for them this season, especially in Federer's case. Djokovic has enjoyed an amazing injury-free run in the last few years but even he isn't invincible forever. I don't doubt the long break is just what Djokovic needs after playing so much over the last few years. I'm sure he will come back next year refreshed and fit and raring to go again just like Fed and Rafa have done!
