It's crazy money, no doubt, but I have to give them credit for not messing about and going for it. We see so many sagas spread out over entire windows or long periods where teams want a player, the selling club name their price, but they always bid 10% under and look to eek out a deal.

Chelsea were messing about with Lukaku from January for instance, Everton named their price but the club were saying they would only pay £70 Million. Then one day Man Utd came in with the asking price (£75 Million and a few add ons I think) and the deal was done in a week. What's £5 Million in today's game if that's the player you want? Same with Sandro, Juventus want £60 Million (crazy for a LB imo), we've bid £53.7 Million. Surely if Chelsea think he's worth £53 Million they would pay a bit extra and get what they must think will be a key part of the side for the next decade?

Same with Aguero around 2010. He was a Chelsea player in everything, barring the fee. I think our bid was £3 Million less than what Atletico were asking. City payed it and he's probably been the best striker in the league consistently for the last however many years.

So yeah, whilst the fee PSG payed is sickening in many ways, I have to respect them for it, begrudgingly.

The buyers do have the right frame of mind. You can't take money to the grave so we are going to go out and spend it. Major signing bringing one of the best in the world to PSG. I guess it will be the norm soon enough. I know 1 billion was mentioned the other day, but who knows?

It makes me want to load a game up and play with PSG. Just a pity that I'm not 1% fascinated by the French league. :p

If the transfer fee record is doubled everytime it's broken, we won't have to wait long for that £1 Billion player :D

There is definitely some honour in refusing to pay what you feel is over the odds, but the team will suffer for it in the long run. Maybe that's a sad state of affairs and a sign the game has lost it's soul, but that's the way the game is today. Don't hate the player, hate the game and all that. There's always going to be someone willing to pay the asking price, is a couple of Million with the money in the game today really worth it if you're missing out on a top player who'll make the difference? Possibly not.

Ha yeah I haven't played Fifa for years but using PSG felt like cheating (that was back during their early days of money, Lavezzi, Moura, Pastore etc..). They all had those high skill abilities so you could pull off the rabonas and the like at will, often even when you didn't mean to lol. Most sides were lucky to have 1 player with those skills (Real only had Ronaldo who could!) I always used Juventus, they were a 4 and a half star team back then though.

tim vickery (English but brazil based south American football journo) said Neymar wants to be world player of the year..and he cannot do that at Barcelona.

because a) he is in messi's shadow/not the main man, b) he isn't as good as messi (or suarez come to that), he has more chance of improving if he is the main man at another team.

looking at it that way..you can see why he has joined psg.

If PSG win the Champions League, Neymar will automatically have a good shot at the Ballon d'Or for that year. No doubt for me that he is the best of all when we are talking about his younger generation.

Arrived in Skopje earlier today. Excited! Come on United!

Ronaldo told in Spanish court that he wants to go back to England. Surely there is only one option there. Unless this is just a move to get a bigger contract, it won't be a good situation in the club. The player will want to leave but nobody will pay enough for Madrid to say yes to the transfer. Nothing worse than having an unsettled star.

He would be in with a chance in that situation, but he's playing in a pretty ****e league. So that would count against him. Someone like Bayern would've been better from that perspective, much better league and better chance of reaching such heights. PSG were about the only team that could afford him however, the guy's a mercenary, obviously a large part of it is about money no matter how much Neymar might try to lie through his teeth about it, but that's modern football.

Yeah over here we don't chase tax cheats, we elect them to government, can see why he wants to come here. To be honest though I think he does just want a new contract.

Bayern, Juventus or someone in the Premier League would have been a better choice probably. We'll see, Ligue 1 could be on the rise. We can't know what he wants. It's already a huge amount of earnings in Barcelona and other top clubs. I think Neymar bought himself out of their contract because La Liga refused to accept payment. Will be easier domestically since he doesn't have Real Madrid to compete against anymore but it's going to be much harder in the Champions League. After winning everything in Barcelona, his decision to try something else sounds reasonable, especially if he doesn't want to be someone's assistant but the leader instead.

If you care so much about guy's taxes, at least wait for the end of the case. Soon he will not be in a position to ask for bigger contracts, the guy is getting older and declining. Could end up seeing this one out and leaving somewhere for free. And even if that happens Real wouldn't feel like losers after all of his contributions to the club.

You surely can't believe that Neymar will be one penny out of pocket for his sale. Certainly will be harder in the Champions League, is going to be interesting to see if he can take them further, if he doesn't win anything like that or at least make a good go of it it's going to look like a bit of a waste. Think it's probably a bit of both, believe that he has been looking for a new challenge but I think if they weren't paying him so much more he would've left it and waited for a better opportunity at a club in a strong league who can challenge at the top.

I'll comment before during and after, if he's been falsely accused then he's showing it in a very unusual way. Behaving like a spoilt child being called out by someone not giving him the special treatment that everyone else gives him (which is basically what's happened). Anyone making anything like that kind of money and cheating your way out of paying tax is despicable frankly, whether they play for Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man Utd, Liverpool, whether they are a footballer or not there is not really any justification.

Surprised there's been no talk of Barca going back for Sanchez to replace Neymar, not that much worse last year of contract so cheaper. Seems a no brainer to me, Arsenal probably more open to selling him too as it's abroad.

I don't, but I think he has bigger motivations than money. Or at least I am saying that money isn't the only thing. For me personally, those good players who go to China while still having some years of football remaining are all bigger mercenaries than anyone who joins PSG. Agree about the bold part.

Ok, fair enough I guess. I just don't give it that much importance (this is not a tax fraud speaking :p).

I agree that I would see it as a waste if he can not lead PSG to European glory, in the traditional sense of what a waste is. Not in the oil wealthy sense when their weekend poker games have higher stakes than 200 million.

@TheAssassin I hope you have a fun time at the game. That pre season excitement is coursing through my veins. And this is more than just an average friendly. Euro Super Cup > charity shield. :p

If Madrid don't have Bale in their future plans, Mourinho will try to sign him. Excellent player who has done well in Spain too IMO but he is quite injury prone.

I wonder who will Barcelona bring now. Dembele and Coutinho were mentioned but their clubs don't want to sell.

I hoped I could do everything and have time and go to the game too but I am still without a passport. :D Hope you enjoy the game and the entire Skopje experience @TheAssassin as well as bring some luck to United like you did to Novak every time you attended his matches. ;)

It's stunning. Since we got here it's been quite hot for our standards (well, more hers than mine) but still, no complaints. You could obviously see Manchester and Madrid supporters on a lot of corners but also feel the entire city excitement. Macedonia have never held such a big football event before, this isn't an ordinary day for them. And they couldn't get any better two clubs to arrive here.

I better attend big CL games in the future if it turns out I also bring luck on the European football stage. :p

Nice match against Chapecoense yesterday. Good goals, most notably Busquets' long range shot into the top corner, and a great reception for Fernando Guerrero, the guy who survived the plane crash.

United improved after they went 2-0 down. No shame really. Not even I am delusional enough to believe we are on that level yet. haha

Still, another glorious chance to level at 2-2 with Rashford. Reminder of last season with the wastage.

Matic looked sweet when they were under siege.

Pogba looked average at best. Being very kind.

A shame for the middle part of the 1st half, couldn't string a few passes and applied no pressure whatsoever. That's when they scored the first goal. A little angry it's a one goal defeat when one of theirs was offside but before the game I didn't expect us to be competitive with the European champions so there is a positive.

Bring on the EPL! No hilarious wastefulness this time lads!

United still have some work to do to reach Real's level but I am glad they competed, didn't allow to be embarrassed, unlike certain Italians did a couple of months ago. Tight until the very end. Of all their new signings, Matic impressed me the most.

I was worried a bit since we left our place a lot later than planned but everything went well in the end. Filip II is a beautiful stadium, as is the entire city. A truly wonderful experience.

There were many United supporters in the restaurants, pubs, and we even ended up sitting yesterday with some guys from Manchester, two rounds of Skopsko beer were on one guy, Adrian is his name. What helped us gain even more sympathy and free access to the Macedonia's finest, apart from the fact we support the same team? Mentioning during the chat that we are from Norway. I guess I will be playing the Ole Gunnar card regularly from now on when I get a chance to meet fellow Red Devils around Europe. :D Didn't have luck to run into any of the Full Time Devils squad. Maybe they weren't even there but it wasn't likely to see them even if they did attend the Super Cup. Obviously I saw some groups of Madrid supporters as well and had the wish to meet with them but neither me or Elisabeth can speak Spanish, while from my impressions at least, they aren't good at learning any non-Spanish language so we didn't try anything there. We did meet some Madrid fan Vassilis from Greece who was our neighbor in the hotel and we had a good couple of evenings with him.

Probably a fair result, 2-1. Could have easily been 3-0 for Madrid but also 2-2 and went to extra time. Suspicious first goal from Madrid, could have been offside. The second one though was sweet. Lukaku made some really dumb decisions but I am happy that he scored a goal on his official debut, and it was against Real Madrid. Not bad. Not convinced by Lindelof yet, pity Bailly was suspended for this game. Also, unfortunately Ronaldo only played the last few minutes. I was hoping we'd see more of him, but this makes sense since he had no pre-season minutes at all. Wish I could praise Pogba tonight but I can't. Someone better give him a hairdryer treatment or get another world class midfielder or two to help him. However Matic was good. Really good. Don't mind the 40 million when the guy is ice cold. Hopefully the previous Nemanja's journey will be his guidance. Also I liked the atmosphere. Not extreme as it can be in some southern leagues, but not theater-like either. A perfect middle. For me personally it's not ideal if I am behind one of the goals, it's either because of the impression of not seeing the action on the other half as good as on yours or simply getting used to the angle on TV. But I also wanted to be inside one fanbase instead of being in between them, so no regrets really, it was very enjoyable.

In the end, current difference in class between the two clubs is evident, but it's not as big as I thought, so I am pleased. Not even the best team in the world will be able to beat Manchester without putting a really solid amount of effort.

Yeah, it's not a strength of his. He's always reminded me of a Heskey/Carroll. Kind of like the bigger kids in the playground who look better than they are because of their strength. He scored a lot against weaker teams last year, but disappeared against the better opponents. I remember the Chelsea game at the end of the season where we effectively won the title, it was billed as an audition for him coming back to Chelsea but wow, it was like a bug on FIFA where the player runs around like a headless chicken and you have no control over him

He'll score lots of goals in the Premier League though and at the price in today's game, it's not a bad signing. He'll be a better buy than Morata I think, although that's not saying much.

A bit like Antonio Conte oh the training pitch when he finds out another player has been sold without his permission.

Not sure about that comparison with Heskey and Carroll. Yeah, they're big. His goalscoring record in the premier league is already greater than the rest of their careers. :p Big enough game today to score in. Don't really want to complain much about the first chance, he made the keeper work and Pogba had the whole goal to aim at on the rebound. Of course he would miss. I want to get off his case. Need to see a performance against West Ham.

Oh yeah Carragher is right, Conte will be gone before the start of next season. He's not done himself any favours with the Costa situation and some of his targets are bizarre, but the club have been awful with selling key players and young talent. It's been a masterclass in how to mess things up really! I said a few months back I could see it coming, unfortunately there is previous

As for Lukaku, he's definitely a Heskey type imo. Sure, he's better at it, but you said it yourself.. he's not the brightest and I don't think anyone could accuse him of being the most technical out there :p effective in England against the mid to lower ranked teams though, which was a weak area last season.

Great! If you get a chance, try to attend the next Champions League final that Manchester United or Real Madrid play in. Nothing beats that event.

It's not as bad as you think but we tend to stick to our own, at least that applies for those who don't have to interact with foreigners on a regular basis. If my mother wasn't half-English, I probably would have never learned the language. Matches are a great way for meeting all sorts of interesting people. Over the years lots of youngsters, singles and couples, loved the Camp Nou experience and were happy to learn more from chats with me or other a bit older locals.

2nd leg at Santiago Bernabeu means it's a perfect scenario for the King to silence the stadium again. :p

You attended a Champions League final? If so that's so cool. May/June is usually a busy time for me so I can't see that happening in the near future.

I think it will be tight like the last Super Cup we had. Away goals might decide again. Excited but obviously wouldn't mind losing it if we end up winning other competitions.

Yes. Right up there with 1994 where Milan beat us 4-0, it was the finest CL final performance I have ever seen. That's when I stopped going to away games on a regular basis and also the last day I smoked. Can't describe you how much it has helped both in terms of finance and health.

You remember this, surely. :p

Nothing happened yet. Coutinho is 99% staying in Liverpool, the other biggest whisper is BVB's Dembele. What I think would be better right now is to get someone in defense and midfield. Neymar wasn't very consistent last season so it's not going to be too hard for the replacement to raise the standard from the previous season. All of this criticism about the last season sounds hilarious a bit since we got to 116 goals in the league, a club record. But they weren't spread very well. Real Madrid know that feeling since they outscored us two or three times recently but finished below us in La Liga.

Yeah, I can't see it happening. City have the big squad that can cope with fighting for the League and Champions League, Pep has done it before etc.. Doubt they'll win it, but they should be the last team standing.

You never know though, Liverpool and Chelsea could be on course to miss the top 4 later in the season and put all their efforts into winning the Champions League. Kind of like what Milan did in the 2000's, Chelsea when they won but finished 5th, Utd last year (even if it was the Mickey Mouse version ;)).
