Better for tennis if Chung beats Federer

Nadal had 3 slams when I joined, you already know how many seats you can have. Nothing to do with him, tennis needs a new star much more than Federer needs a 20th slam. I've already said I'd be more than happy for someone else to win the FO a year ago, and got beat up from Nadal fans about it then. Eat some ribs, and walk with Elias ;)

Just wondering if you felt the same way 4 months back at USO 17.

I agree, but after 15 years of Fed, it's too late now anyway, so he might as well win for 2 years more, doesn't matter, new guns should arrive 7 years ago and that ship has sailed.

Any point after 2013 I was ok with someone else winning slams. Hence me being #ThiemThiem #TeamGyroboy #TeamAFOE etc.....

So did I just hallucinate about prayers for La Decima, well deserved 3rd USO and the annual DCGS ?

I know you like Thiem but let us not forget that 2017 was a 2 horse race for Fedal fans here. Forget majors , they even wanted Nadal to win Beijing 500 and Paris masters QF, so he gets another YE No 1

I'll always take icing on my cake. Doesn't mean I won't eat that ***** without it too though :) sorry, i'm not going to sit here and pretend im not ready to see progress in tennis when I am, a decade is long enough.

And that icing is what Fed fans want - to keep Nadal at a distance.

If Nadal retires , you are not going to find too many Fed fans wanting more.

But it's silly to say it's not better for Chung to win as far as tennis goes, that's all. Id never expect a fan of any player to root against their guy, just be objective about how bad tennis needs a young star.

Your concern is touching but invalid because you have an agenda.

The younger guys are finally starting to find their way. If Rog wins, it won’t be bad for tennis.
I agree that a Federer win would Not be bad for tennis but a Chung, Cilic or Edmund win would be better. Roger has won so much for so long that he does not need the win to establish his greatness, whereas, the other players left do need a slam win to establish theirs. Still, if Roger does win this AO, it will be well deserved and a tribute to talent, effort and proper game style.

You didn't get beat up for it by Nadal fans. You got told by senior VB members octomom and clayqueen. Big difference. :)

No way Chung beats the Federer that beat Berdych. His serve is a joke, Federer will break it any time he feels like it. Sure Chung can run, but he hasn't the makeup to chase Federers barrage. No one does, cept Nadal from years gone by.

As the heads of Federer fans explode, I will explain.
Roger Federer is 36. He's now one of the oldest players in the ATP. He won 2 grand Slams last year. He's (or will likely be) the last man of the Big 4 to remain fit. Murray has likely lost his battle to injury, and Djokovic is fighting the tide. Nadal is still dominating, but he's becoming increasingly inconsistent and injury-prone. Not a recipe for longevity.
A generation of 30+ players should not be favored to win titles anymore. Even the players who were in the past (Connors, Agassi, Laver) didn't win majors this long, and were few and far between. There is no new generation stepping up yet to take the mantle, which is why the ATP is desperately trying to prop the young players up. Dimitrov and Zverev are the only guys who have really done much, and Zverev still hasn't made it past the 4R of a Slam.
The Big 3 are all legends. I still admire and root for Djokovic. The hype will always be there until they retire.
But at this age that's what they should be. Legends. The fact that they're still around only adds to the mythos around them, but it also says that the sport isn't developing. The tour, and TTW, have descended into a grim uncertainty about the future of tennis. For the first time in tennis, there is no Grand Slam winner in their prime. Cilic is arguably an exception, but it's unlikely to see him bag another, unless he makes another shock title run (AO18 might be his last chance). Wawrinka and Murray are fading. Djokovic and Nadal's V8 engines are getting worn out, the price paid for brute-forcing their way through Federer's empire. Del Potro is unpredictable and a nostalgic favorite, but the injuries and age have taken a toll on even him. And Federer....even Superman ages.

Life must go on. So must tennis.
If Chung beats Federer, that's a step in the right direction. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see Federer get injured or something. But the Big 3 aren't getting any better at this age. The first conqueror was Stan, who showed the big 4 that they were beatable. But he was one man, also in his late career. A new generation, one made up of younger, more consistent, more driven players must rise.

A win for Hyeon is a win for tennis.
So if Nole were in position to win would you still say this?

I wish it could be Fed and Chung in the final tbh.

I think #20 for Rogi is a big, big story. Ideally, I suppose, he’d snag it at Wimbledon for things to come full circle. But nobody thought two years ago that he’d be this competitive at the Aussie again.

I really hope Chung continues to grow and carry his momentum forward.

I hope Federer destroys the young man. His Djokovic game is awful to watch. His serve is just terrible. But like Djoke in his time, he is a major push, so if he catches Federer on a rare off day, he could win. It would be awful for tennis, but Fed has to retire one of these days, then tennis will slide back into third world status.

Any story at this point is a big story.

Cilic collecting slam #2 is maybe the smallest of the big stories, but man, does he deserve it for being a pro's pro for years and seeing nothing but disrespect from the tennis community for the effort. So the guy had a meltdown when the biggest day of his life turned out to go down the blister-induced crapper. He's obviously rebounded nicely. We should all face adversity with such flying colors.

It would be nice to match Serena's record in the slam dept.

No.

What is better for tennis is for them to have an exciting match, punctuated by their differing styles and to captivate the audience. Chung is already awesome for tennis because of his altheticism and dogged persistence.

What is better is that a younger generation sees heroes they can look up to. A whole nation is about to be excited for Chung.

I hope they make a great rivalry over the coming year.

That's a lie. In WTF 2010, Federer beat Murray in RR, Djokovic in the SF and then Nadal in the Final. I'm not certain, but he could be the only member of the big 4 to beat the other 3 in the same tournament.

Subject was GS, i.e AO and the guy was saying healthy Djoko and nadal wouldn't be a factor anyway. That's a crock of ****.

I mean... I enjoy Fed's tennis and he's a fine enough guy. But the insufferable fen fans that make up 95% of TTW pretty much preclude any other fan base rooting for him to win. How can I possibly root for an outcome that will lead to 5 months of "20!" and "Fed is the greatest athlete ever!" Threads?

We're talking about Federer 2.0 here, who just started his career last year at the age of 18. Fatal mistake!

Yeah it's nice to see new champion from another continent like Chung, just like it was nice when Li Na from China won her first slam.

Of course the OP who's a Nole fan only made this thread after his idol lost, otherwise he couldn't care less about Chung.
^ a nice sentiment....

....but being the fedfanboy that you are, .you just couldn't help spoiling it with the needless "fanboy projecting" follow-up, could you?...

Berdych was actually playing better and Federer was slumpy thus we thought he could end Federer, it was not like he is big 4 strong, he is strong enough to take down a BgameFederer. When Federer 3 setted him, he is a mug for us again, not overrating him now. Nor we are making AO18 to be a strong slam

Many Fed fans just feared his good form and Fed's sloppy play, that's it. After today he once again is a mug

Lol ok. Personally i never think any ranked atp player is a mug. You have to be a damn good player to get ranked. To be in the top 20 requires rediculous skill. Was just messing around pointing out the double speak and double standards lol.

I think that an amazing story for tennis would be for Federer to face Chung and squeak out a 5 set win, followed by Federer beating Edmund by coming back in the 5th set of the final to seal his 20th slam victory. And then afterwards, Federer retires. That would be amazing for tennis. Of course, I don't want Fed to retire. But that would be one heck of a story, particularly if Edmund and Chung would start winning majors. That would be amazing.

I want some younger guys to actually step up and compete for a major title which most of the hyped up guys have been unable to do. It has been refreshing to see Chung play solid tennis and make it far.

In the same vein, I am also trying to enjoy every moment of tennis that Djokovic, Nadal and Fed have left because in 15-20 years we will all be looking back and talking about how great it was to see 3 tennis Gods all bash each other at their peaks with unprecedented dominance.

Fake news. Both Djokovic and Nadal fanbases are such loud-mouth hypocrites who don’t like Federer being around because he’s a career achiever that doesn’t allow either Djokovic or Nadal any breathing room. Both those two fanbases wanted a tour filled with career underachievers so their favs won’t be threatened on the court or off courts which include press fawning, court assignments and what not. No matter what their fans say, no player on tour right now threatens their fav achievement wise or limelight wise except Federer.

Just a lil recomendation maybe try not to start off a convo with "fake news". It kinda is a trumper lunatic fringe thing.

I don't even care enough to go back and forth on this anymore. If you can't live with anyone else winning anything new, EVER, that's on you.

Love it when people start caring about actual Tennis after their idol is out of the tournament.

All some could crow about when Nadal was still in the draw was his 'sleeveless' look.

;)

End of the day, neither Federer nor Nadal are simply vanishing because their opposing fandoms wish ever so intently that it be the case.

Cheers!
